My father-in-law bought a brand new Dacia Sandero in Feb 2019 for £6799. It did not have a radio, was poverty spec but had a 3 year warranty and somehow he managed to get a £200 discount. It reminded me of a 1990s basic car of Fiesta size, which also cost about £6700 thirty years ago and came with a 1 year warranty. An absolute bargain if you wanted one and he did. Those days have gone.

@Mi$Fit Studios you would have loved the 80's cars back in the day here in the u.k. i had a 1986 vauxhall astra base model, and all it had was a heater and a radio! no electrics, no power steering, no catalyst, it was a 1.3 litre with a carburettor, so very easy to service 🙂

It’s definitely a good car but all manufacturers are abandoning simple, no frills cars! Every fancy item on a car equals big repair bills. Dealing with accident repair and insurance, the cost of single parts is utterly eye-watering - for example if you have a light smack at the front, it was a new grille, pair of headlights and bumper, spray them up and done. Now radar cruise, parking sensors, LED headlights and that’s suddenly a £7k repair bill - headlights are coded to the ECU, radar sensor is £900 ALONE, it and the sensors need calibration and you can’t repaint the bumper as too think paint will give false readings! I personally think tech on cars is way out of control and highly wasteful. But as always a great review Matt!

@@archechme depends where you look. On Auto Trader, search new cars and sort by price, and once you get past the Citroen Amis (technically a quadricycle, not a car) then the cheapest new car is a Picanto 1 at Perry's Preston for £12k exactly. For between 12-13k there are a mixture of Sanderos, MG3s and Picantos - both the MG3 and Picanto come with 7 year warranties compared to the Sandero's 3 year.

Back in the day when it was around £7K, you could definitely forgive the shortcomings. A vehicle to get you from A to B, reliable, practical and massive bang for buck. At this price though it sounds extremely noisy on the road, too many cheap materials and a lot of competition around for not much more. Appreciate this is the top of the range, which I think takes away the fun and uniqueness of the sandero. Thanks for reviewing it though, probably the best review video I've seen of this car.

Dacia is at 7000 euros, but it's not for the British because they don't appreciate cheap cars. I don't think the British will get the 65 horsepower version because they will laugh at it. So for them, the cheapest is the 100 horsepower version, which is 3000 euros more expensive.

I've always like the shape of these newer Sandero MK3's, I think the packaging is perfect and one of the only cars you can obtain with a physical key! The price however has taken away it uniqueness in the market, the truth is to your question Matt - most streets in the UK is an episode of 'keeping-up-with-the-joneses'! You've got to have the newest best and latest trend that you can afford (or not afford for a lot of people) and the Sandero will just never have the snobbery in that sense, so they've given it more toys with a higher price tag and now it looks very similar to the rest, but it is still cheaper and that makes it the best bargain on the roads for what you get!

£12-15K seems quite a lot for this "budget" car, especially when everyone seeing you step out of it thinks "tightwad alert". However, I do like it: not much to go wrong, proper handbrake and spare wheel, no silly electric gizmos that will fail after a few years. I don't want an SUV, so I am not really interested, but second hand prices look attractive. £8K will get you a recent one with low miles.

I have a base model Cactus and it's actually refreshing to not have too much tech, ok could have done with air con but it's just amazing the things you take for granted like Bluetooth, Hands Free, alloys (I added alloys) the only luxury it has is cruise control. Sandero auto, fully loaded with all the extras is £16,232 a long way short of £20k, a boggo Toyota Yaris with metallic paint and sat nav is £22,570, about 30% more, the Dacia is still a bargain. My wife has a Jogger Extreme, It is about half the price of any equivalent, we have had six 7 seaters in the last 14 years from VAG, Renault and Citroen all from new, the Dacia has harder plastics, but is just as well screwed together and just as good to travel in as any of the others, so again a bargain There is a nine month plus delivery time for most cars, and all sorts of problems to do with such things as chip shortages, energy prices, exchange rates , in light of this I can understand why manufacturers are concentrating on more profitable models in their ranges. I am sure that when the balance between supply and demand returns to a more normal balance the cheaper options will return, indeed Autocar reported last week that Le Vot (the CEO of Dacia) promised that a fall in production costs would be met by list price reductions.

The original thinking was that some people didn't want a three year old car out of warranty, they weren't bothered by the badge on the bonnet. Having virtually doubling the price of the entry model, I wouldn't of bought one. What would be the point, so that's one sale lost. Personally I think it's a mistake, when it comes to a replacement for our 108 we won't be going back to another Dacia, it'll be an i10 or Picanto, more stylish (albeit smaller) and with a more upmarket name

Haha, love the "obscure" vehicles (to we Americans) profiled on this channel! As an avid car enthusiast, I have long been aware of Dacia from its Renault 12, pre-Ceaucescue Christmas Day 1989 execution existance. But these are obviously cars seriously deserving of evaluation now that Renault is owner rather than in partnership with the Communist Romanian government. Like VW did with Skoda and SEAT, Renault has done with Dacia to carve out a unique niche for these vehicles taking advantage of lower wage costs in Eastern Europe to price it competitively, yet include the engineering expertise of Renault and Nissan. Thanks for this treat!!! I always love seeing "forbidden fruit", even if I have no desire to eat it.

One thing I've noticed about small cars these days from some manufacturers is the widths are growing, almost to the same size as cars two classes above. The latest Sandero is 1,848mm wide, the MG4 1,836mm. The latest Ford Mondeo is 1,852 mm and VW Polo 1,751mm.

I noticed the Sandero's quoted width of 1848mm too, but am a bit dubious they've got it right... If you look at the Jogger's dimensions, which appears to have the same bonnet as the Sandero and Stepway, it is quoted in their brochure as 1784mm. I moved to this car from an old shape '18 plate Sandero Stepway. The MK3 Sandero is a quantum leap from the old model in both comfort and handling. I only use my car to get to work and back and to do family visits, and have not yet put 2,000 miles on it. Interesting to compare thos with the earliest incarnations of the same model. I have to say, as I get older, (60 next year) I really don't want computerised this and electronic that. Especially now that the cost of absolutely everything is moving beyond the reach of ordinary humans. Given the choice, I'd go for a decent used version of one of the previous versions.

We have one of these at work, I am always surprised by the basicness of it, ok my Mk5 Titanium X Mondeo is not a fair comparison, but even against my 2004 Volvo V50 it is basic, nice to drive though

This is actually a really nice little car, and would make a perfect household runabout. However, I think Dacia have made a mistake with the pricing structure. Nice though it is, it just isn't worth £15,000. Perhaps better as a used car in a few years time.

A decent spec new is nearly £15,000 you would be much better buying a year old Polo, I got my mother the new model 2018 Polo SE with a 15,000 miles and a few and whistles for £10,750 pre Covid before the used prices went crazy. New it was over £17,000.

So many reviews mention a high load sill at the rear making thigs problematic......... never ever had a problem with any car with a high or level load sill - its just a lift and drop you are not running alongside with the suitcase you know lol I like Dacia's. I have a n old Duster. Didn't set out to buy one but kind of fell into it. All tried and tested old Renault stuff and a bit Fisher Price to the feel but you know what you are getting into at the start. Overall 50mpg on diesel - more on a run - and loads of space - decent spec its a Laureate- ref this Sandero - if its top of the range its still £2k less than the basic spec Fiesta

If you're a reasonably strong chap its not such a big deal, but a small or less strong person would struggle with big bags, plus it limits the size of big things going in - the boot might fit a washing machine but the hole in the back wont fit one

I could live with the features - or the lack thereof - but not with the styling. It just looks to "utilitarian" - inside and outside. I don't really drive with dirty rain boots on a regular basis. 😉 Only the Panda gets away with that.

I wonder why they got rid of keyless entry and fuel filler central locking in Finland. Car feels very dated with cumbersome fuel filler cap requiring key to open it. Would be perfect car with keyless and central locking fuel hatch. I have the top spec comfort model with these features missing, also missing nav, wireless android auto and second usb port because chip shortage.

You refer to this as a 15k to 20k car car and moan about the interior quality, its not even a 15k car, let alone anywhere near 20k. It's only just not the cheapest car you can buy. So still to get a whole door card is a bonus.

Considering the Clio / Capture / Micra / Juke are nearing end of life in Europe and will be replaced by Electric Vehicles, the Dacia moving upmarket is a good move for enticing customers who still want an ICE vehicle. 13K for the entry level model is good value and bigger than the Picanto / i10 or Ignis, though the MG3 is more of a competitor. I have a MKII Sandero Comfort and 3 years ago with extras it was under 10K new and though I drive "better" cars in my employ, still more than happy with Dacia and love the basicness, saving up for a Stepway Auto at 17K.....

14:40 There remains one thing that bothers me about Renaults: the manual gear lever is still far away from the steering wheel down on the floor, like it's an after thought or a much older fashioned vehicle. Honda included a bracket to raise the shifter mechanism closer to the steering wheel since at least the 7th generation Civic 20 years ago (disguised by an elevated centre console of course), and the gear level is still elevated closer to the steering wheel on the Civic right up to the current 11th generation model. It's these little thoughtful touches that count! [Honda also use nylon shift cable bushings instead of rubber like Renault, so it doesn't have that rubbery shift feel that Renaults do either!]

A Dacia is at its best in lowest possible spec, no? What I always hear is that smaller and cheaper cars aren't disappearing because of a lack of interest for them, but because European manufacturers are now focusing on higher profit margins. That way, I fear, most of them will become "premium" and already that word has lost a lot of its former meaning in cars. Though plastics may feel somewhat nasty, all the luxury equipment in this sandero demonstrates that. Also do I think most people wanting an affordable car in the future will likely go to Chinese and Korean makes. But yeah, we'll see which way it goes, with also the entire EV-invasion and environment-related legislation. Challenging times which seem to be the reason behing the entire profit margin-strategy of European makes.

I agree, greed might cause them to loose the bottom segment of the market. £7k to £12 1/2 is one hell of a jump. I had a 2015 Sandero, would I have bought it at 10 or even 9 grand? No is the answer, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

Agreed. Younger people are more environmentally aware and are taking up e-scooters, e-bikes, & are getting free (bus) public transport in many areas now. European car manufacturers are doing nothing to capture them. The Nissan Sakura kei car in Japan has just halted orders because production can't keep up with demand. Meanwhile e-cars/buses/bikes have been commonplace in China for the past 20 years. They're waaaaayyyyy ahead of us Europeans.
