I’ve got a Canadian imported 16 canyon diesel. It’s shelled out, so no regen. 34mpg on trips averaging 45-95mph. Just cannot beat it.

Thanks for doing the video - always good to hear other’s experience with this 2.8l duramax. Here’s mine. 2019 gmc canyon with the duramax. I got my into small diesels with a 2012 Audi Q7. Had it for 5 years when the VW emissions scandal happened. I held it to the bitter end before the buyback deadline but loved that vehicle. I will preface this long post by saying I am not totally knocking the canyon but the 3.0 l V6 Audi/VW diesel was the motor of my dreams. I pulled a 22’ wakeboard boat and would get 20 mpg + and seemed like the motor was barely working. Very quiet too. I did have one NOx sensor code thrown and dealer replaced the sensor. Now for the Canyon. In GM’s defense on the issues I’ve had, it has way more emissions shiteree on it as the EPA has had more years to justify their existence. I have had it to the shop 4 times in under 9000 miles. Yes , I know, comment will be truck isn’t driven enough and that is the issue but this is why I started with my other experience and therefore knowledge on diesels. 75% of my mileage is highway. I keep the DEF fluid fresh by only putting 2-3 gallons in at a time. I do end up disposing of unused parts of the 2.5 gallon jugs but fresh DEF is critical as some posters have stated as it crystallizes. In the injector and possibly the pump and line too. I don’t idle the truck as this is also a DPF killer. My issues have been NOx sensor code and sensor replaced twice within year 1. I believe it was bank 2 meaning the second NOx sensor. Low DPF differential pressure code and the CEL on two weeks ago 500 miles into a 700 mile trip on the I-80 in PA. Put me in limp mode with no indication of the issue other than reduced engine power message. Absolutely embarrassing and dangerous having Amazon semis ripping up behind me going up inclines. I stopped and bought some more DEF fluid. I had just crossed 15% DEF remaining when it happened. it should not have had F all to do with my issue and the CEL stayed on but something cleared because i wasn’t in limp mode. No way the DEF had anything to do with it as you will see in the next description. My p244a code was only apparent when I got my code reader the next day meaning the difference between inlet and outlet pressure to the DPF was too low indicating the filter was full of soot beyond the set point - or the sensor was screwed which I understand happens. Very weird because it should have been doing it’s own regens to keep the dpf clean due to my long 70 mph trip. Anyway I went to a GMC dealer and they did a forced regen and sent me on my way. I am not convinced this was the issue and I could have done my own with my xtool scan tool but was resistant to do it. Don’t do forced regens unless really needed. It can shorten the life of the DPfilter. Almost at the end here. I have a love hate relationship with my little duramax. It has much less torque than my Audi had and is close on the fuel mileage but slightly less by a few mpg. Again it’s got more emissions jewelry on it which is giving the real issues. As the OP has stated it has around 7 sensors (Temp x 3, NOx times 2, DPF press diff, soot matter sensor, etc,) plus fuel injector to the DPF and a DEF injector and pump so very complex system. But like all of you i love little diesels - if the EPA would get their head out of their arse they would realize they are less polluting than most gas engines if nothing else by the fuel effiency. The 2.8 l is out of commission after 2022 but they do have a 3.0l v6 in the full size truck. If you are getting any of these little diesels get yourself a bidirectional scan tool and make sure it will manage the emissions crap on your truck before you buy - lots of false advertising on these things. The scan tool will be needed because after the 3 year warranty you don’t want to have be paying for code reads and sensor replacements at the dealer. There is a a longer warranty on the emissions system but it’s a scam. Sensors and usually diagnosis is not included read the warranty fine print. So if you have a NOx sensor or one of the others I mentioned go after 3 years you will be looking at a $500 bill + each time so be prepared to learn about this truck and do some work of your own. Also despite 30 mpg vs 20 mpg for a gasser you will save minimal dollars at the pump especially if you live in a blue state where they are also trying to drive a dagger through the heart of diesel owners. Usually 30% higher or worse per gallon.

My 18' Z71 with the V6 did great towing a 23' RV from the East Coast.... all over the middle of the country... to the Pacific NW... down the West Coast... and back over to the East Coast. When towing over 5k pounds or something with a heavy tongue weight... use a WD hitch if you can. It really spreads the weight off of the back wheels and puts it back onto the front wheels. Makes a huge difference. I am gonna get a second Colorado now. The wife has taken mine. lol Probably going diesel now that I have the RV and Horse/Cows to haul around. The V6 has 86k miles on it now. I am a big truck driver for over 20 years. The Regen is just really hot. Let it do it's thing. The type of DEF you put in, doesn't matter. Brand names won't matter, just a urea solution. I would just run it and let it complete it's Regen. Probably not delete, cause you got egr, etc. My semi gets real hot when Regen. Only concern, or problem I ever have as of late. Make sure your def injector nozzle, gets cleaned. Maybe at high mileage. But it crystallizes and does not spray well after awhile. That should be part of regular maintenance in modern diesel. Clean the def injector that sprays the fluid. Other than that, just keep your battery topped, so the ecm doesn't get confused. Enjoyed your video, I am considering the Duramax Colorado for myself.

@blakeburdette7171
@blakeburdette7171 3 жыл бұрын
@@nathanielegbert 5w 40 synthetic diesel oil. Should be good year round in Oregon. The def sprayer is often the culprit when issues arise. May not need it until 100,000 miles. Not sure where it is. I know the shop has had to clean mine a couple times. I drive semi like 120,000 miles a year. The semi def injector may need cleaning at 250,000 miles. Not a big deal, just be aware of it. I never shut my truck off really. Cool thing driving all over country. No dumb sparkplugs. If my 4 batteries get low, the ecm will throw codes. A lot of starting the engine and short trips will drain the batteries.

We had a 2016 LT trim, crew cab, long bed DMax, loved it. We towed a 23’ camper with it and it rocked. Would get 15mpg towing that beast and it was super stable even with it loaded down with our mountain bikes d stuff. My wife is an RN and we were considering traveling around while she took travel gigs and living in it for those periods. 3rd kid arriving made us move yo to a half ton just to fit three kid seats across the back. I think we are going to get another one though in the future as we miss it a ton. 35-36mpg on two lane highways which was better than our former Outback by a good margin. Having the monitor to keep track of regens would be huge. That was the one thing I didn’t like, we had it go into limp as it tried to regen several times without us knowing. Otherwise it was great.

Edg insight cts3. It’s universal for a lot of vehicles. I spent a bunch of time making sure I got the right one. Turns out they are pretty universal. Plug and play.

If you haven’t already done so, change your transmission fluid. If you tow, Amsoil synthetic is the way to go.

Sorry for the noob question but what’s the digital display he’s reading from? Is it just an engine monitoring software or what?
@nathanielegbert
@nathanielegbert 3 жыл бұрын
It’s essentially an engine and drivetrain monitoring system. It also does diagnostics. Some of the displays that you can see on the monitor are not represented easily on the dash of the truck. There’s also other functions that can be performed for example, doing a forced regeneration for the exhaust preventing it from going into a limp mode at inconvenient times.

@@nathanielegbert what’s the name of that digital display? Also, looking into buying a 2017 z71 Colorado 2.8 diesel. How would you rate the truck from 1-10, and if given the choice would you buy the same one or go up to the zr2? I do a fair amount of camping for about 7 months a year.
@nathanielegbert
@nathanielegbert 3 жыл бұрын
@@GanTreFTW it’s the edge CTs 3 monitor. Real easy plug and play. I think it all depends on what you want it for. I like camping as well, but I also know I wouldn’t be needing lockers. If terrain wasn’t that bad (snow/mud/forest) I usually get a buddy to bring their rig also. The biggest reason I got this one is because of the long box. We want kids eventually, and I don’t want to lose money changing our trucks... so I was also considering the long game. I’d give it an 8/10. For me the seats could be a bit more comfortable for a long drive. Maybe a little bigger also. I understand it’s a smaller truck. The other thing that can be a draw back, is making sure you don’t go into limp mode from the exhaust. Other than that it’s perfect for me. Long box 4 door, towing capabilities, diesel, mileage, 4x4, and compact enough to easily park and get groceries. Plus there’s a bunch of aftermarket stuff you can get. I almost ordered the bison. Being realistic with myself, this one was more practical. The kid in me wanted the bison for sure lol. Good luck man!

Do you have it tuned? I don't think I heard you mention that. I have a 2017 Canyon with EFI live, and the same CTS 3. It doesn't play nice when switching tunes and interferes with it. I did message Edge and their response was they have yet to release the Colorado/Canyon compatibility otherwise it works fine. I just purchased an upgraded turbo for it as well and can't wait to get that installed.
@nathanielegbert
@nathanielegbert 2 жыл бұрын
On this video, no tune. I only had the intake done. The CTS3 was just for monitoring stats. I have noticed the edge would glitch every now and again. Maybe once a week. I just unplug it and plug it back in. It fixes it, and the setting are all intact. Bigger turbo? Dang, and the block and internals handle more boost?
@tjrob3452
@tjrob3452 2 жыл бұрын
@@nathanielegbert The turbo i bought is from duramax tuner great bunch of guys. It increases the boost to around 36-37 range with a map sensor change and new tune. They've spent a long time testing it before releasing it for sale. It's been teased to everyone for about 8-10 months. I'm going to say that is likely the last possible upgrade without getting into a engine upgrade with rods, fuel injectors and transmission upgrade. it's going to push the rwhp close to 285 @550 ft. pds of torque.

Is it possible for the monitor to show your intake air temperature?
@nathanielegbert
@nathanielegbert 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question. I haven’t investigated that. The gauge selections aren’t labeled nicely for the Colorado like the full size trucks. When you look up the different gauges to display, a lot of them instead of names, has codes or numbers. It would take a bit to see if that’s an option by process of elimination.
