I got a GMC Canyon diesel and recently towed a 5,500lbs toy hauler dry weight and had 3 quads that each weigh about 400lbs plus camping gear and 2 pasangers . I was maxed out at 7500. It drove like a champ and I also drove through the grapevine out in Cali and it didn’t struggle at all. And that’s a really steep hill! I averaged 12mpg . The 2.8 diesel is great at towing

I bought the GMC diesel back in 2016. I couldn’t be happier! Never even considered the gas engine. I towed 5000 pounds on the highway and got close to 20mpg over a long haul. I was only going 60 but to get anywhere near 20 while towing is amazing. At almost 100K on my canyon now and still running great! I would buy another one in a heartbeat! The torque this little truck has is great! It also gets close to 30mpg without towing. I don’t care if it’s slower than the gas guzzler! I get 550 miles to a tank

Don't forget that the diesel will have more residual value also, when you sell it you will get most of the money you paid for the diesel option back. No one ever seems to figure in this.

Although this is true, it is also more expensive upfront. Almost everything with a higher MSRP new is going to have better resale value than its cheaper variant. In my area diesel is $0.50 more a gallon, so the fuel economy difference doesn't really make up for much. I guess it all comes down to where you live and whether or not you plan on towing a lot. With that being said, i would like a Duramax version myself.

i'm not sure if i understood they said if you didn't tow it would jump from 45k to 80k to make up the cost difference. The diesel gets better mpg in both towing and not towing so i don't understand how the number magically increased? You would be saving money via mpgs either way.

the v6 is a weeble wobble. You could hear a straining one coming around a mountain. I noticed the quickfire 87 octane is as far as they go..can't even send it a full stroke of fuel.
@Encourageable
@Encourageable 7 жыл бұрын
Victor Milani they both have the same sound deadening: thick glass, inset doors, wheel well treatment, and liquid applied sound deadening. It's just because the diesel has so much more torque that it doesn't have to struggle with a load - it's just the nature of diesels. You can't go wrong with either one - each has its own strengths and weakness.

Diesel has more sound insulation in the Colorado as well. I also kept steady 1750 rpm while the V6 was running between 3300 and 4500 rpm. That's a massive difference.

Guys, thanks for your service of providing information on trucks you test. I have left what some may say negative comments in the past but after some thought I don't think they are negative but are a real concern for a lot of tradesmen that want to buy base, efficient trucks and then when they go to shop for one at a dealership are disappointed that they have to buy so much upsell options that it actually penalizes the potential consumer from buying a fuel efficient vehicle. This of course is by design and I am honing in especially on a great product which is the GMC Canyon/Colorado. I always install a canopy on my truck and carry around 100 - 175kg of tools, which is were the diesel really shines because even on the V6 gas engine as good as it is will always consider the truck to be under load and the cylinder deactivation may be a useless feature with no fuel efficient mode to activate. But to get the diesel with the 4WD option I would have to go pretty high end to get a diesel which should be available with a base model. Can you help get the word to GM that there are lots of tradesmen that want the basic work truck with the diesel? GM can use economies of scale on a base line 4WD with a diesel and seek that package just like they sell the 4 door packages to people that never use the 4 doors. Please help!!

National average for diesel is usually 30-ish cents more per gallon of diesel. Although diesel seems to lag behind gas by at least a week when prices change. For that reason the gas vs diesel choice is almost negligible financially. Diesel is clearly the choice for frequent towing, but the gas truck is a great commuter right up there with the diesel - drive mine around 50 miles a day and love the new v6 and 8spd.
@houseofdiesel
@houseofdiesel 7 жыл бұрын
Most people that are buying the diesel are commuters with a 20-30% advantage for the diesel freeway not to mention our motor will last longer since it achieves this at 1700-1900 rpm.

I wonder how much elevation affected the results? The turbo diesel should be at or near full output but surely the normally aspirated gas engine was down a bit compared to sea level. Great comparison though, you answered a ton of questions I had about the differences between the two engines.

I have the Duramax in my ZR2 and it really does pull effortlessly. Even pulling a 1996 4x4 Chevy Silverado with a plow on top of a 2500lb lowboy trailer, the Duramax made it look easy. She goes into 6th gear and the converter locks and it just pulls without any RPMs and it’s quite. Great little motor.

I made this comparison almost a year ago as well, compared it to a Chevy gas 1/2 ton and Dodge gas and diesel. After taking in the extra maintenance on the diesel, I went with a full size 1/2 ton gas. I did it over 5 years and the diesels were just not as cost effective as they used to be, even with the higher MPG numbers. MPG numbers are not the only thing these days to consider when buying a vehicle.

In central FL, diesel fuel costs more than gasoline, so for me, the break even mileage for the premium charged for diesel would probably go over 100k instead of the roughly 70k you guesstimated. Another factor to consider...diesel maintenance is more expensive vs.the same on a gas engine...how about doing a followup video by going through the owners manual and getting quotes from a local dealer to price out each and every prescribed maintenance for each truck to say 100k? Then considering purchase price and resale value, say five years from now, make a big picture view of the total cost of ownership.

@8180634
@8180634 3 жыл бұрын
Those tuners make me a little nervous. My understanding is the diesel torque in stock trim is right at the rating for the transmission (369 ft lb), and the electronics have a torque limiting feature to be sure the motor doesn't over do it. Someone with more knowledge please correct me if I'm mistaken. But if this is the case, then adding 80ft lb on top of that can't be good for the service life of the transmission.

I know neither of these are really off-road trucks but I wonder. Around here, with light off-roading, just putting along on tight trails, it's not unusual to see 10-15 mpg in the course of a long day. What would be the difference between the diesel and gas in these circumstances? Would the EPA city rating give an indication?

Eighty-seven octane is the norm for regular unleaded for most of the country but in reality you should be able to use the 85 octane if that is what is available in your area. That octane is that low because you are at altitude in a lower oxygen environment so knocking or detonation is not likely to be an issue.
@truculent2086
@truculent2086 7 жыл бұрын
Invincible Osprey yep. In the video notice he hesitates on choosing the gas octane. At altitude 85 runs great and at times is over 70 cents cheaper than diesel. Mostly the only people using 87 in Colorado are from low altitude and unaware. Finally keep in mind you are only 1 tank of bad diesel away from a multi thousand dollar repair bill. Been there done that!

like always, we all want to know the bottom line.. do a mock estimate of mixed towing and empty driving. add the initial purchase price difference and the additional cost of recommended maintenance of the diesel and the additional cost of gas price vs diesel fuel cost.. don't forget the ever so popular DEF... Now tell us how many miles or years we would have to own the Diesel to make the additional cost payoff..

Calculating those results x 100 gallons you ll run 870 miles with gas, and 1270 with diesel! Towing of course, without trailer the 2.8 has to give a little more than 30/gallon, gas engine I believe around 20/gallon. Just awesome 👏🏼

I only go for the 3.6L V6 on The Chevy Colorado ZR2 because gasoline can obviously go faster than diesel, also I would totally recommend the Gas more to the Off Roads because it's lighter and faster, that's what I would use the 3.6L V6 on ZR2 Colorado. Other than that I would pick diesel on other trims like the Z71, and the LT model (Except the ZR2)

I have a 2016 Colorado with the V6 and 6-speed trans. I pull a 4500# travel trailer at 60 mph and get about 11-12 mpg. I think 70 mph is a bit fast to safely pull a trailer. I wish I had the diesel even though diesel prices are much higher now. Another benefit to the diesel is the increased driving range (40%) over the gas motor. I do like my truck as an everyday driver, however. Thanks for the comparison.

I like the real world mileage comparison here, the video is well done (as always). This is also where I advocate not only telling MPGs, but maybe also use gallons per 100 miles (rest of the world uses liters per 100 km). The reason why is it makes it a lot easier to do the mental math on how much money and actual fuel you're saving. To the brain it's a much more linear expression. 4 MPGs to those of us who drive highly efficient small cars that can exceed 40 MPG doesn't seem like much because, well, here's the example. At 40 MPG, you use exactly 2.5 gallons to go 100 miles. If you have a car that gets 44 MPG instead, you use 2.27 gallons to go 100 miles. Less than a quarter gallon difference to go 100 miles, of course that will add up over an entire tank and the lifetime of the vehicle, but realistically the difference is small. However, when we look at these two trucks towing, 4 MPG difference is a much more massive fuel saving. The gas truck at 8.7 MPG would burn almost 11.5 gallons to only go 100 miles. The diesel at 12.7 MPG uses 7.87 gallons, or a savings of 3.63 gallons over 100 miles. Multiply that by your per gallon fuel price and your brain very easily can latch onto how much of a difference this really is. It's kind of clunky to say gallons per 100 miles, but the expression is so much easier for the brain to wrap itself around what the fuel savings really are.

How does a diesel motor cost $3700-$11,000 as options when the material cost is only about $300-2000 for upgrade drivetrain and power train? Is this price gouging due to emissions penalties? The mini Duramax was already in production and being used in other Countries so I don't understand any inflation arguments with new factory equipment and space either. I have really enjoyed my 2016 Canyon SLE with Duramax. I am getting between 27 and 28 mpg commuting to work and back. Although the oil change costs more, it doesn't require to be changed as often and my mechanic throws in a free DEF refill with every oil change. The best mpg that I have gotten is 31.4 over 450 miles. Towing, I got 20 mpg on a trip half-way across the country. During which, I got great performance towing through the Appalachian Mountains. It climbed the hills with no problems and the engine brake maintained my speed on the downhill side. I have one question though. Would the 20 in rims on the Denali be hurting the fuel millage and towing performance on this years TFL tests? It seems to be lacking a little from last years tests.

Jeremy Smith I don't think the weight difference the 18's and 20's are not that much. As they come from the manufacturer with those numbers in mind for an engineering stand point. Btw you are getting some great numbers and would recommend looking at a tuner I'd have not already. The size difference of rim might be effecting the mpg on the diesel by 1 at max. If they were aftermarket rims not from the chevy or gmc then I would expect them to weight more.

Ok here I am again guys! Just about a year later than last time, with an update. We have now had the CrewCab V6,4x4, Colorado, for just over a year now, with not one problem or issues at all in the first 12,000 miles. But we have traded the Wolf Pup 16FQ, a 4,000 lbs gross travel trailer, in on a 2020 Grey Wolf 24JS, that rated as high as just over 7,000 lbs. but empty is just over 4,500 lbs, but as high as we ever go, at just around 5,800 lbs with EVERYTHING we need. We never have more than 10 gals in the fresh water tank, because we don’t do much boondocking, we mostly camp at any one of the wonderful State Parks, that are all over our Beautiful Country, that normally have power and water hookups, some have campsite sewer hookups. So we very rarely travel with anything more than half a black tank, or grey tank contents. We drink an cook with bottled water, not taking any chances in getting sick. So how does the Colorado handle the new trailer ? So far, where ever we have been? With ease, sure the average mileage has gone down, from 11-15, to 8-11 mpg, but at no time have I had the need to run “floored” to stay at the speed limits. Of course we have not yet traveled in The Mountains. In a few months we are planning a 2-3 month trip cross Country, where I know The Mountains await us, but at no time will we be in a hurry, plus I still don’t use Tow/Haul all that much, even with the newer 8 speed. The empty mileage just cruising/commuting around has stayed at 17-20 city depending on how traffic goes, with 22-26 highway at the speed limits of 70, or 65. With another all time high of 32 mpg! On a long stretch of level mostly straight 2/4 lane Florida County Road, that went on for about 40 miles, at 40-45 mph with the Cruise Control set. That was also able to achieve 15.5 mpg on that same road, later on with the new trailer at 5,200 lbs on the way home, on that County Rd., instead of the highway, just to see how it would do! With the Cruise Control set at the same 40-45 mph, at 40 mph in 6th gear at 1,700 rpms, to 6th gear at 1,900 rpms. Not bad at all! I met a fellow camper in that campground that had a diesel Colorado and a trailer as heavy as mine, that told me coming cross country, running over Wolf Creek Pass in CO, his little diesel walked over that hill at 55 mph at 2,100 rpm’s, he could have gone faster, but the trans heat got a little high so he backed out!

I can’t believe they have the tow rating for the gas engine so high Considering how high the rpm is while towing. How long would that motor last? What amount of wear is taking place? GM screwed up with the length of stoke on the gas engine. The max torque is to high in the rpm range.

I think it's very important to talk about the diesel being at around 2k rpm vs the gas at 4.5k rpm. On that basis alone the diesel is the better utility vehicle, metal is metal is metal. It's over double the revolutions for the gas powered motor to do the same work. Fuel economy be damned. This is why diesel runs forever. Lower rpms. Might not be as fast, but it's always gonna run longer.

Where I live Diesel costs 40 cents per gallon more than 87 octane regular gas. So the problem you have with a diesel is you can never make up for that initial cost difference. Yes you get better mpg, but the fuel cost difference negates the mpg benefit. That said if you are towing heavy and often diesel is a better experience, it is just not cheaper.

(I live in Los Angeles) Now my truck is a 4x2, Crew Cab, long bed, Z71, the 4x2 give me an advantage of a few mpg. Also, the 4x4 is not rated to tow at 7,700 only the 4x2. The 4x4 is 7,600, I believe or 7,500, very small difference. The diesel accepts B20 fuel. Price too! I bought mine for $33,000 purchase price. The MSRP was $36,6XX not $44K I did not add any attachments or spray on bedliner. It is cheaper to buy a spray on somewhere else, no stereo Bose, no NAV because all of the radios have Android auto and the Apple version.

@sequoia464
@sequoia464 7 жыл бұрын
To me, the results are a bit puzzling for the V6 - if you look at the video at 9:28, the computer shows the truck running at 12.6 MPG at 35.4 miles into the 66 mile test run. This means to me that they then got under 5 MPG for the last 31 miles of the run for this to average out to 8.7? This same truck got 4.9 MPG going up the Ike test. Something doesn't add up here. I understand that the onboard computers can be inaccurate - but this is a huge differential. I know that my '15 Colorado V6, pulling my 5600 #, 8' wide trailer consistently gets close to 12.5 MPG - even pulling through Wyoming and Utah - usually running 3000 RPM or under. Of course the diesel MPG also seems low compared to what my Son in Law gets pulling his 6000 # trailer with his diesel Colorado. Heavy winds were mentioned, I'm surmising they were behind these MPG numbers? Other explanation is the first half of the run could have been downhill slightly - wind at the back, return trip looks slightly uphill, maybe fighting the wind this direction?

Same engine as the canyon. Many of those miles were 3800rpms or so on flat ground. Computer said 14mpg but when i did the math at the pump it was 12.5. Hello again! Here I am two years later since my first comment. I’m now on my second Colorado, just because I needed a Crew Cab instead of Ext Cab! Still got a V6 gas engine that I’m very satisfied with, true the mileage is less, but in regular driving is quicker and faster. But as far as towing goes, I never use Tow/Haul Mode as it just wastes gas! No Tow/Haul or Cruise Control that ends up keeping the engine at higher than necessary engine speeds! But if you just feather the gas pedal you can keep the RPM’s down an run in higher gears! That will help the mileage also! On a 4 mo 4,000 mile Camping Trip Towing our 4,000 lbs Travel Trailer we averaged 14 mpg that way, with all temperatures at low levels. When we run in the mountains I may at times use the Tow/Haul Mode, But only when the transmission temperature gets over 200 degrees will I use Tow Mode and let the engine run at higher RPM’s. But I do always use Tow Mode on the way down to take advantage of Grade Braking to help save the brakes, that are very good in the Colorado! So now after 4 years an 68,000 miles on trouble free fun an explorative miles I must say the Colorado is a fine truck! That actually tows an hauls as well as any of the Silverados with V8 I’ve had in the past!

They must have been against quite the headwind to have to need 4500 rpm on flat ground. I can imagine 4500 plus towing up a steep hill though. I think it is the over-control of tow haul. I would want to turn it off (tow haul) on flat ground to let it have less rpm. Not expecting 2100 rpm, but 4500 seems overkill on a flat. Thinking manually use a gear that gives high 2,000s, or low 3,000s, for a flat. Bites that GMC has so few colors and rims tend to be ugly, but you can get a tan interior, while Chevy has an all black interior, but better wheels, and much more color choices. I myself like the new green that Chevy came out with for 2018.
