Esther Starobin was two years old when her parents sent her out of their German hometown to an uncertain life in England. An organized rescue effort for Jewish children, known as the Kindertransport, took place between 1938 and 1940. Esther spent the next eight years with a foster family, largely unaware what was happening to her parents and brother who had remained in Germany.
Hear Holocaust survivor Esther’s experiences in her own words recorded on October 6, 2021. First Person is a monthly hour-long discussion featuring a live interview between journalist Bill Benson and a survivor and including questions from the audience, available on the Museum’s KZbin channel.

Hello! Just found this now, three days after airing. I’m watching on KZbin from Northern Maine, USA. I’m originally from New York, oldest of nine children, age 73 today. My mother’s family came to the US, NYC, in the 1880s from Poland for reasons of pogroms, extreme poverty. My father’s family were from Ireland, coming to NYC in 1849-1859, refugees from the potato famine.

Two sets of parents who loved her as their own had to give her up, send her to a country where they had never been to stay with people they did not know. They would have been constantly so worried whether people were kind to her, if she was safe, if she was being looked after, if she was sad or lonely. The Harrisons sound absolutely lovely and so does Ester's mum but the letter from the American uncle is so cold. I was quite shocked at that, so unfeeling.

I am writing from Oklahoma. I have always been so intrigued with the holocaust. I found a magazine when I was a child about a boy and his mother on one of the trains. The mother was pregnant, went into labor. She and the baby froze to the floor and of course died. Since then I have read everything I could get my hands on. For 70+ years I have been absorbed with the holocaust. May God be with you all.

I just don’t understand the hatred against Jews. I grew up in Newton, MA which had a large Jewish population. My dad was a floral designer and most of his clients were Jewish so he provided floral & design for bar mitzvahs & weddings. My mom lived in Denmark during the occupation and came to the USA in 1950. She had many stories to tell me. So I became very familiar with Jewish traditions, history, etc. My very best friend was Jewish. So I just can’t understand the mindset behind the hatred. God Bless you, Esther. ❤️

Mrs H 🇬🇧 ..My Mama was born in 1931..She was a child when WW2 Broke out..From 1939 til 1946..She suffered..( Not like Millions of other in Austwich & other camps 💔 ) She never knew of that Evil til the early 60's ..She lost many a young friend in UK with the Bombing THAT she needed professional help... I'm thankful that she NEVER suffered like many others.. I visited Auschwitz and it was Worst that you can imagine.. In the late 70's early 80's ( Series World At War ) I didn't pay much attention as I thought it wasn't possible to do such heinous crimes ( I still believe that ) Only Evil monster's in human form could cause such monstrous devastation.. Those that are in there 50's who are now Grandparents yourselves who have been told & experienced PTSD Cos it's not just WAR that causes extreme anxiety & flash backs .. It's trauma of all kinds.. I'm so devastated for all victims & For those that never made it through WW2 & for those that lost they lives .. If I could bring you all back ..I would.... I'm just thankful I wasn't born in that era... RIP to all those that lost they lives in WW2.. 💔🇬🇧

Esther Sterobin, thank you so much for sharing with me this so personal fragment of your life. It must be a very sad odyssey to recount it. The crimes and cruelties committed against my sons and daughters, my fathers and mothers, my brothers and sisters hurt me deeply, regardless their ethnicity and nationality. In Isaiah 2: 4, Jehovah God, the Creator and Source of life, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, promises: "He will be judge among the nations and will settle matters in relation to many peoples. They will turn their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning shears. The nations will no longer raise their swords against each other and learn no more to wage war." My immediate neighbors are Jews and I am a Jehovah's Witness. Their hearts are superior than pure gold by far. They are extremely kind. The gentleman takes care of my trash can every Wednesday without my asking him to do so. They are lovely human beings, and they are not in need of the smallest improvement.

Thank you so much, Esther Starobin, for sharing with me an infamous fragment of the Hitler's Nazi horrendous regimen via your life. It must have been a painful odyssey to recollect such memories and to recount them; they only echo the evilness of Hitler and his followers. May Psalm 37 alleviate your suffering: "Do not be upset because of evil men or envious of wrongdoers. They will quickly wither like grass and shrivel like green new grass. Trust in Jehovah and do what is good; reside in the earth, and act with faithfulness. Find exquisite delight in Jehovah, and he will grant you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to Jehovah; rely on him, and he will act in your behalf. He will make your righteousness shine like daybreak, and your justice like the midday sun. Keep silent before Jehovah and wait expectantly for him. Do not be upset by the man who succeeds in carrying out his schemes. Let go of anger and abandon rage; do not become upset and turn to doing evil. For evil men will be done away with, but those hoping in Jehovah will possess the earth. Just a little while longer, and the wicked will be no more; you will look at where they were, and they will not be there. But the meek will possess the earth, and they will find exquisite delight in the abundance of peace. The wicked man plots against the righteous; he grinds his teeth at him. But Jehovah will laugh at him, for he knows that his day will come. The wicked draw their swords and bend their bows to bring down the oppressed and the poor, to slaughter those whose way is upright. But their sword will pierce their own heart; their bows will be broken. Better is the little of the righteous one than the abundance of many wicked ones. For the arms of the wicked will be broken, but Jehovah will support the righteous. Jehovah is aware of what the blameless go through, and their inheritance will last forever. They will not be put to shame in the time of disaster; in the time of famine they will have plenty. But the wicked will perish; the enemies of Jehovah will vanish like glorious pastures; they will vanish like smoke. The wicked one borrows and does not repay, but the righteous one is generous and giving. Those blessed by Him will possess the earth, but those cursed by Him will be done away with. Jehovah guides the steps of a man when he finds pleasure in his way. Although he may fall, he will not be hurled down, for Jehovah supports him by the hand. I was once young and now I am old, but I have not seen anyone righteous abandoned, nor his children looking for bread. He always lends freely, and his children are in line for a blessing. Turn away from bad and do what is good, and you will remain forever. For Jehovah loves justice, and he will not abandon his loyal ones. They will always be guarded; but the descendants of the wicked will be done away with. The righteous will possess the earth, and they will live forever on it. The mouth of the righteous one imparts wisdom, and his tongue speaks about justice. The law of his God is in his heart; his steps will not falter. The wicked watches the righteous, seeking to put him to death. But Jehovah will not abandon him to the hand of that one or find him guilty when he is judged. Hope in Jehovah and follow his way, and he will exalt you to take possession of the earth. When the wicked are done away with, you will see it. I have seen the ruthless, evil man spreading out like a luxuriant tree in its native soil. But he suddenly passed away and was gone; I kept searching for him, and he could not be found. Take note of the blameless one, andd keep the upright one in sight, for the future of that man will be peaceful. But all the transgressors will be destroyed; the future of wicked people will be cut. The salvation of the righteous is from Jehovah; He is their fortress in the time of distress. Jehovah will help them and rescue them. He will rescue them from the wicked and save them, because they take refuge in him."

My comment has the goal to share an up building message full of hope and can console your broken heart. Jehovah God promises that those who have died will live again in Isaiah 26:19: "Your dead will live. My corpses will rise. Wake up and shout for joy, residents of the dust! For your dew is like the morning dew, and the earth will let those who are powerless in death live again." He will bring them back to life; that is the hope of the resurrection. Have a super great peaceful day!

What about Holodomer, what about the great leap forward, what about the second Sino-Japenese war, what about Genghis Khan. Why are all these crimes against humanity ignored while they act like the Holocaust was the worst thing that happened to humanity. Can't we remember all these things instead of just one of them.
@noobie7719
@noobie7719 2 жыл бұрын
If we choose to remember “all these things”, it lessens the impact! It was a STATE SPONSORED effort to extinguish one group of people because of their ethnic and religious identity, it was an attempt to literally rip the heart and soul from the Jewish people, and they came dangerously close to doing just that! I can easily imagine the impact of losing ONE family member, can you try to imagine the impact of losing SIX MILLION?? We might have had a cure for cancer by now, how many children were never born because their great great grandparents were slaughtered, and what would THEY have accomplished? The Nazi’s slaughtered all who they thought of as “sub human”. I have to wonder if any of US would have been born if Germany had won that war?
