Yeah, apple want you buy a new MacBook , that's why it's not working, and im not joking, this Apple ! even if you are the owner and you still can't get your password problem fixed by Apple, but third party shops can do it for you ! so that's the Apple make money today :)

What helped me if the popup thing didn’t work I shut down my computer held command, r and the power button and “loading startup options” should pop up and then options and your MacBook should pop up and you go to options and then you cracked ya Mac open.

Hey man, i have had the delightful issue of forgetting my password as i type this, tho keeps coming up saying i have no internet after i input my apple id and password. I also dont have the option to connect it to the hot spot (as im at work) cause there is no drop box to do so. Sorta hoping when i get home it automatically connects to my home wifi an i will be fine.

I have a FW password so nothing is helping me reset without messing up and causing an issue where I can’t even boot. Currently i can get to the main log in on osx, but if i do ANYTHING it will cause me to have a FW passcode issue. That was 6 years ago so no way to reset or fix it.

Looks like Apple got smarter, older macOS versions used to allow password reset without asking for the Apple ID, which means that anyone can have access to your Mac, kinda renders the password useless
