I traded in my 2015 crew cab 5.3 for a 2021 crew cab 3.0. I have several trailers that I haul a few times a month. I didn't want to drive a 2500 as a daily so I was real excited when GM brought out the LM2. I have a car hauler, 20' enclosed race trailer, 21' boat, and other much smaller trailers. The 5.3 did pull them all, but not very well. The towing capacity on the 3.0 is waaaay underrated. When I put a rock crawler in the enclosed trailer with all our gear it weighs in at around 8k. The trailer is 20' long, 8.5' wide, and 7' interior height. It's a small house. I set the cruise at 81mph and cruise with traffic down the interstate. I use the Curt Trutrack weight distribution hitch and it gives you all kinds of confidence. No sway and keeps the truck level. The truck showed 10.5mpg on the dash, 11.1mpg calculated, over a 3 hour trip. The truck ran in 8th gear mostly and never felt overwhelmed. And btw, the transparent trailer camera system is a game changer.

I had a 2015 sierra denali 4 door crew cab 4wd, got 17 to 18 mph on average on a 90 mile round trip commute to work. Traded it in for the 2020 3.0l diesel. Drive it the same way on the same trip and I routinely get 28 mpg so in my opinion it was worth it to me. Not to mention when I tow my boat I used to get 7 to 8 mpg and with this truck pulling same boat same way I get 17 to 18 mpg. Just my thoughts for anyone considering the truck, it does save on fuel even with the difference in price. Where I live right now gas is 2.21 and diesel is 2.36 a gallon currently

I recently bought a 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE with the 3.0L Duramax. It had 30,000 miles on it and was getting about 19 mpg. I took it to the dealer for a seat belt recall and was told that there was a software update also. When I asked what the update was for they said it was a diesel exhaust Fluid update. After getting My GMC back I drove it for a few days and I am now getting 26 to 27 mpg. Thanks for the update.

Couple of elements I think you forgot to talk about. The 6.2 L prefers premium fuel and premium is usually a little more than diesel. At least where I live. Another factor is fuel economy while towing. 460 lbs feet of torque at 1500 RPMS is amazing. Another factor is range! When taking a long road trip its nice have that extra range. And lastly the ability to tune. When you have a turbo charger, tuning can make some pretty big differences. Also as a bonus this diesel is the only 3.0 diesel with an exhaust brake also good for towing. Thats why I’m going for the diesel. Then going to add a bank’s derringer when it comes out. Help out with that power a little.
@TexasTruckChannel
@TexasTruckChannel 3 жыл бұрын
All very fair points! You are correct that the 6.2 prefers premium, but it's not required. Also, you got us on the towing, but again if you're towing all the time, we highly recommend a 3/4 ton. We're pumped about the tuning aspect. Please let us know how the bank's derringer works out, that sounds like a lot of fun!!!

None of my "buddies" with a V8 are getting anywhere close to 22 miles a gallon. They get more like 16 average on the 5.3. that's at least 10 miles a gallon less than I'm averaging. You guys compared the 4-cylinder EcoBoost which is supposed to get 22 miles a gallon. Not only does the 4-cylinder get less gas mileage than it claims but it's a 4-cylinder! It is not even in the same dimension as a straight 6 diesel. Not to mention that actual owners of the four-cylinder EcoBoost are claiming an average of 19 miles per gallon. The 4 cylinder also comes with the troublesome 8-speed transmission. The Duramax always comes with the amazing 10-speed transmission that no one has had problems with. It's as smooth as butter. In my 21' four wheel drive Duramax RST Z71 I'm averaging 25 to 26 miles per gallon in two wheel drive, and I get over 600 miles per tank. I get 16 to 17 actual miles a gallon when towing heavy trailers. Keep in mind if you're ever going to tow anything there is nothing to compare to the Duramax. I can tow a loaded 7,000 lb dump trailer and my RPMs never climb over 1600 to 1700 doing 72 miles an hour, and I can't even feel the trailer. I've had a Toyota Tundra and a Ford F-150 SuperCrew. Both were big v8s. Neither were anything like my Duramax. This thing is absolutely amazing. Both of my big v8s got well under 10 miles a gallon when towing, and the engines would drop gears and struggle going up hills. You can go straight up incline's with the Duramax and it doesn't even drop a gear on the interstate. The gas mileage is like a medium size car or small SUV all the time. It is a world of difference. Even if there wasn't serious gas mileage savings, which there is, I would still want this diesel. I had no idea what I was missing all these years.

I have a 21 Silverado with the 3.0. I LOVE it. So smooth and I just wanted a diesel. I couldn't justify the 6.6 HD truck, I also don't need something that size. Also best thing about this engine over the 5.3 or 6.2 is they STILL have the lifter dropping issues, The 3.0 has no worries about that.

Current time here where I live and diesel is the same price or even 3 cents per gallon cheaper (of course you have to add DEF). I have a 2019 F-150 with the V-8 because I tow boats, a kayak trailer, and a camper. When not towing, I get 21 at best and usually around 18-19 in the "almost city" where I live. When towing, I get maybe 13-15 depending on what I am towing (the kayak trailer still gets about 16 because it's not that big or heavy). I also go on long trips across states and the country. At 75-78 mph, I am getting maybe 19 mpg. If I can get 30 (some folks have been getting well over 30) traveling and close to or even over 20 when towing, I will be in good shape and it will be worth it. It's also not like the diesels of old where the oil changes are so much more expensive than gassers. That's why I am looking at getting one.

I tow a bass boat with an atv in the box every weekend to fishing tournaments and/or hunting trips. I also use it for my business, which is in the guide industry. Also, here in Canada I pay 3 cents a litre more for Diesel than gasoline, so yes my mileage does kill my friends gas rigs. Also, my wife has a 5.3l Chev, and it’s never seen better than 19mpg highway. 23 is a pipe dream. And the 6.2 and 2.7 turbo are both worse. I had a 2500 Cummins for hauling, and it was a great truck, but too much truck for the loads I’m hauling, and the noise got maddening after a while. And when towing my 20’ bass boat, I get way, way better mileage than my best friend towing his with his 6.2. I average 17.5, he averages 10.8mpg. In one area we travel to for a tournament every August there’s a ridiculous amount of hills, and he’s averaged as low as 9. Imo, if you’re at all towing medium sized loads, it makes no sense to pick the 5.3 or 6.2 and certainly not the 2.7 Turbo, of which I’ve personally seen two completely destroy their engines before 15k miles. One was replaced and is still running today, but the other was traded on a new Toyota, which is a beautiful truck, but has had some of its own problems.

I upgraded from a 2005 Sierra SLT 5.3 to a 2021 AT4 3.0 Duramax. Even with the 2” factory lift on the AT4 I’m averaging almost 27MPG that’s 10MPG more with the Duramax than I did with the 327. Of course due to recent political influences and the extremely cold winter the country is facing the cost of diesel has gone through the roof, but there’s nothing like the smile the sound and torque from that engine put on your face. I fall right into that category of people who need a pickup and want a diesel but don’t need the 6.6 3/4 ton. When I decided to pull the trigger and buy this truck I was lucky to find the AT4 with the Duramax. They are extremely popular here in the North East and every dealership in the Hudson Valley was sold out. Great show gents! Thank you.

Diesel is typically less expensive in Canada for most of the year. Regardless, when comparing to the 6.2 and 5.3 options the fuel savings is more than 15%. Maybe the four-cylinder is closer, but you are foregoing towing capabilities then. I think the fuel savings delta is greater than what you guys are describing. A deeper dive into that might be necessary to quantify your claims.

You guys are WAY off on your math and estimations on the gas mileage. In comparable trims this diesel will average at least 6 to 8 mpg better than its counterpart and where I live in Northwest Florida diesel is currently the same price as regular. When I use gas mileage calculators they say this diesel will save over $4,000 in fuel cost over a five year period of time driving 15k per year. At that point, the diesel is just getting broke in!
@TexasTruckChannel
@TexasTruckChannel 3 жыл бұрын
We're not claiming to be math experts that's for sure, but our point is that it's not as big a savings as advertised. For example, I (Craig) personally drive 100 miles a day to work and back and it is mostly highway. Using the EPA hwy ratings of 26 for the Duramax 4x4 compared to the 2.7 Ecoboost 24 hwy and Hemi 22 both 4x4, the savings isn't that great. Using the current average of $3.03 for diesel and $2.75 for gas, I would spend $58.24 in the Duramax, $57.29 in the Ecoboost and $62.49 in the Hemi. You do have a good point that there are some areas that diesel is running same price as gas, but that is not the historical average and not likely to last, but heck we could be wrong. Thanks for watching and thanks for the discussion, we love the feedback and comments!!!

@@TexasTruckChannel Not bashing but think about this. If you wanted to drive home your point of fuel savings factor in the up charge of the 3.0L diesel over the 5.3. Now do the math over the term of ownership. I bet the gas option is very close in the end. But if you can write off mileage with a business deduction per mile is the same no matter how much the fuel cost and how efficient the vehicle is so the diesel wins hands-down from that standpoint.

Nice video guys...but there are tons of videos on KZbin showing people getting 33-34 mpgs with this diesel. Plus excellent fuel economy when towing. When comparing this engine to the 6.2, which requires premium fuel and cost about the same as diesel, the diesel is clearly an excellent choice. The 6.2 for racing off the line; the 3.0 diesel for excellent fuel economy and light duty towing.

The reason I traded my 2019 5.3 for my 21 3.0 diesel is because the torque and how much more distance I get on a full thank. it tows much smoother my trailer with no struggle and still average of 17mpg Vs my 5.3. I used to average 10 to 11mpg with my trailer and 17 without it both of my trucks had and has a leveling kit.

more importantly with the 3.0 if you aren't in a hurry and set cruise at 55, 34 mpg tank avg is possible on a 4x4 X31 CC std bed! i always point out the scalability of the 3.0. efficient, brisk enough for 5600lbs, and can tow like boss. tow capacity is limited by the starters ability to deal with heat long term (info via one of GM's project engineers), not the actual engines capabilities and it shows.

Your debate about getting a diesel versus gas is interesting. However, if you’re buying a truck to tow your average boat for your average ice shanty or your average trailer weight of about about 7000 pounds.... on a regular basis...Your diesel is still going to get better gas mileage... which means more money back in your pocket...... because you’re also forgetting that when regular unleaded gas prices increase diesel basically stays the same as we saw in 2010 and 2012 diesel was the same price as gas if not cheaper....And regular gas is going to continue to increase and diesel will not

@JROC734

This is easy. The reason to pick this is because of the excellent fuel economy and diesels are generally more reliable. (or so they're stereotyped) I was not a diesel in a half-ton fan before the current Silverado/Sierra because I6 > V6. (and not just with diesels either) I would definitely rock this engine. It's MPG is great. Diesel cost me less per gallon than premium and I own a Terminator, Lightning and new SS 1LE plus a JD 5075E so I know about having to run both premium and diesel. In fact I've owned at least one vehicle requiring premium since 03 so like 18 years now. Anyway the extra cost for the diesel over the 5.3L is I think less than $1,500. I love the 6.2L. The GEN5 LT based 6.2L engine is excellent, but it's markup is BS. It probably costs GM about the same or close to it to build a 5.3L truck as it does a 6.2L truck. The 6.2L is just a 5.3L with a 4.065" bore instead of a 3.78" bore. As a result of this you get higher flowing heads, larger valves, higher flowing intake, etc, but they're the same engine in many ways. Same deck height, bore spacing, crank, rods, etc. The 6.2L shouldn't cost an extra $2500 over a 5.3L even if the 6.2L gets the 10L80 and the 5.3L is stuck with the old 8 speed. Here's why GM is pushing the new 3L Duramax and why they make it hard and costly to option a truck with the 6.2L. CAFE. As of recently GM (like every other manufacturer that builds cars to sell in the U.S.) has to average 20 MPG across the fleet of cars that the sell in the U.S. Whether or not the 5.3L gets better MPG's over the 6.2L in the real world is irrelevant to CAFE as the 5.3L is rated by the EPA to get like 2 better MPG's on average so it's way easier for GM to average 20 MPG when selling a bunch of diesel and 5.3L trucks than 6.2L trucks. Sad truth. Personally I love the 6.2L. The LT1 in my SS is quite fun, but seeing as GM's largest selling vehicles by far are latge, V8 power vehicles they have to try and save MPG's somewhere to appease the EPA D'bags. I feel that if diesel emissions don't stricken up then GM is going to start pushing the 3L Duramax a whole lot more. JMHO.

The real world highway mpg on a half ton gasser is NOT 23-24mpg. I have an F150 5.0 and the best highway I’ve seen is like 20 at normal speeds. I watched a ton of real world reviews on this motor and people are legitimately getting 27-28 mph highway. On top of that, they are seeing low 20’s in the city whereas I’m somewhere around 15-16. These figures come in closer to 25% greater than the gassers and its at least that if not more while towing! I love gas V8s, but this little 3.0 L diesel has the torque of the big 6.2 L gas with better fuel mileage than the 5.3 L gas. What's not to love about that. Max torque is in at 1500 RPM. You have to wind the 6.2 L up to 4100 RPM to make that kind of torque. If you're going to be towing anything, this would be the engine to get in the 1500. As long as the durability holds true for this engine, GM knocked it out of the park.

Truck was a 8 speed. Compleat wast of money. 2019 2500 Duramax 6.6 L 13 to 18 mpg in winter you could see city dip to 10 mpg depending on temperature. 2021 2500 Duramax Denali 13- to 17 mpg 10 speed trans. 1” play in steering bad driving experience got rid of it. 2021 Toyota Tundra platinum 10 to 13 mpg 6 speed good truck but more like a car. 2021 Duramax carbon pro at4 with off road tiers. Handling and smooth ride is Bar none. 20 mpg all day long. Hiway 20 mpg city 20 mpg. Idling for 3 hrs on 1 tank combined with hiway and city 20 mpg. Truck has 500 miles on it. I hope to see better mpg on the 3.0L. Reason to buy a Diesel. Little to no input and it goes. The ability to have something worth what you paid. Torque is what wins races. Horsepower is what sells cars. I tow a lot and my 6.2 gas truck liked to be around 5,000 rpms all day every day. Even down hill no engine brake at all. I thought it was going to blow the motor. After that trip that’s when I got terrible mpg I think motor was shot after that.

Hey Tovar, thanks for reporting your fuel costs, that's awesome if you have a diesel. We live in Fort Worth, TX and at the time of filming this episode diesel was more expensive, and still is. But the gap between the two has closed up a bit.

Hey you knuckleheads, this diesel is for people that tow a lot. Going to get much better economy and durability when realistically towing 5000-9000 lbs. Also, most owners are reporting getting better that 27 mpg.

Another thing you’re talking about these half ton trucks using gas getting 24 miles to the gallon....I drive half ton trucks of all brands in the past three years or newer and even if I’m hyper Miling....I’ve never seen those numbers... The best I have seen is 22 or 23 mpg with a basic V-8 gas

We've driven some half tons and have been able to hit 24 without too much trouble. You're right though, a lot of them do not hit that number. Thanks for watching!

5 min and 13 seconds that I’m never going to get back lol. First off there is not a gas truck out there that gets 18 mpg under my foot. I don’t know what y’all been driving must be a Tacoma? Gmc 6.2 L has no power and gets 13 mpg. The ford ego boost gets 13.5 and dodge lol there the worst with the 5.7 L that needs rebuilding after 100k. Most people that have them 3.0L say they are getting low 30 mpg. Diesel has torque gas motors don’t at least not in this day and age.
