To take a random year, in 1997 Radiohead released OK Computer, Wu-Tang released Wi-Tang Forever, Ween released The Mollusk, The Prodigy released Fat of The Land, Bjork released Homogenic, The Verve released Urban Hymns, Missy Elliot released Supa Dupa Fly. Oasis, the Pixies, kd lang, Modest Mouse, Supergrass and more released albums ... and guess who won record AND song of the year? Shawn Colvin. Will Smith won best rap performance for Men in Black. The Grammys have *never* had credibility.

@@TylerG13 yeah, kinda. However, Jacob was (still is?) an acquired taste because of how his insane musicianship can be somewhat overwhelming and I get why people, sometimes including myself, don't get hyped over songs with a billion microtonal voice tracks. But this year he did make really fun tunes, while staying true to his craft, features helping a lot. Also Anthony doesn't shine the most when it comes to jazz related stuff.

@@jules6731 they have Columbia but we are seeing how they dont care about bts actual music, only when they sing in english life goes on hasnt been sent to a single radio station (the ones playing it is because the djs are allowed to pick the songs they wanna play) meanwhile they are promoting dynamite AGAIN, columbia is ACTIVELY ignoring their newest release they are promoting the PRE RELEASE more than the release
@jules6731
@jules6731 3 жыл бұрын
@@idontknowanymore9966 Columbia/Sony are just distributors. BTS aren’t signed as artists under them. That’s why they don’t get playlisting and radio support. Dynamite was an anomaly. I think Columbia was probably trying to show BTS what they could achieve if they gave Columbia a bigger cut. At that point they have to choose: keep their money or pay Columbia to get a more mainstream push. No idea what they’ll choose but seeing that the new album is receiving no support at all, probably the first option.

Not to fully excuse our beloved Mellon but he has before said that he’s not super on board with the newer waves of jazz and funk that people like Jacob and even Vulfpeck have been experimenting and growing in. I mean my god Vulf performed probably the single most impressive live set of the last 2-3 years at MSG and the Djesse records are for sure some of the most interesting modern pop/jazz/funk/??? projects of probably ever? And Hatethony Colliertano hasn’t said more than quick word on either one more than twice.

It's crazy to me that reviewers keep putting him aside even with the sheer amount of musical talent and effort that he exudes. @@wadsmitter511 Melon has a hobby. Jacob is a professional on bass among other instruments that he has complete control over. People would actually have to study music theory for at least 5 years to start understanding what this guy is doing to music. He is the Mozart, Bach, Beethoven of our times. Melon just doesn't have the knowledge and facility to be able to critique him correctly.
@wadsmitter511
@wadsmitter511 3 жыл бұрын
@@diavalitemusic I completely agree that Jacob is a once in a hundred-years kinda guy, and has incredible amounts of potential! We're talking really insane amounts of music and progression to be made through Jacob. However, when it all comes down to it, music is just emotional expression and impression with sound as the medium. Theory and knowledge are incredibly useful tools to achieve a certain sound, and Jacob probably has the most developed musical knowledge in the world right now, but theory and knowledge are not ends when it comes to music, just means. The end is music/sound, and if something sounds bad, it does not matter what theory or technique created it. I'm not saying that complex and technical music is worse, in fact i tend to prefer music that challenges the listener, and think that technique and complexity opens an infinite number of doors when it comes to expressing emotion through music. But again, they are only means to an end. What i'm trying to say is that, if Melon does not like the way that Jacob's music *sounds* , then no amount of theory would compensate for that, since it is not the end goal.

As a BTS fan Im super happy to see them nominated. But I know the only reason they did is because of how passionate and active the fandom is and it'll get the Grammys more views or whatever. And it also feels like they waited until BTS released a song in English to nominate them, I guess their Korean tracks weren't American enough. Dynamite is decent I dont expect it to win but it could who knows

I actually understand why someone may not vibe with it, as it is rawly Jacob collier expressing himself. And he is eccentric, which comes out in his music. The sad thing is I think melon does not value experimentation and progress in music made by an individual anywhere near the level he values his own personal enjoyment. Which is fine and understandable, but not a great guide to finding musical prowess consistently. Charles Cornell is a better person in that regard, and Charles has a great appreciation for pop too.

@@1no435 With the backlash they’ve received in general, I can’t say yes or no to that. He’s definitely the black sheep in this award show because of the lingering stigma on him (excluding the underserved nominees like Justin). Idk how accurate this is but on Gold Derby someone showed a list of what the voters picked for album of the year before the BRP interfered and the list made a lot more sense. Although, it still didn’t have After Hours in the list so it’s kind of suspicious.

I see what you mean but it's still the grammys, at the end of the day. it should not determine them, but at the same time it would if they won one.
