Yes! You hit all the pet peeves of mine with the Outback. That friggin' seat is a PITA indeed. I do love the rails and molded in places in the Outback but would figure it out with the Old Town. Thanks for the drive comparison too. Great info that has helped me decide to stow the Outback and try the Old town.

I own a Native pdl chinese clone. It is been 5 years of harcore use, camping and offshore fishing, out of the box, not so good, but with some mods, it is a beast. I did the ("car engine) oil convertion"on the pedal drive, it is a game changer if you are able to do it on the old town, highly recommend you. O got a "weed guard" that a guy 3D printed in Australia, and it solved the problem with the fishing lines and everything else snags in between the propeller. I does wrap aroung the propeller, but it is easy to clear out. I tried a hobbie once and it is great, but personally I Ipreffer the circle motion of the pedal drive, than the hobbie straight pushes. I think it is a deal breaker that hobbie hulls has that many crack reports on the hull, that freaks me out, cause it is a very expensive kayak, and hull toughness is one the first things you need. I mean a have a chinese Yak that is well abused for years... no hull issues whatsoever.

Man that’s a great video I’m considering both and that has helped me tremendously. Thanks for taking the time to do that

Thank you for this video, I found it very helpful. In fact, I was convinced that I was going to buy an OT PDL120 after watching this because of all the fantastic points you made in favor of the OT. I ended up doing a kayak fishing charter on the ocean in Newport, RI. The kayak supplied was a 2022 Hobie Outback and I found it to be incredibly easy to navigate, supremely stable in washer machine conditions, so easy to propel and the seat without a cushion to be so very comfortable. I spent 5 hours in it landing fish and pedaling around and was not tired or feeling any ill effects from the seat. I was shocked and highly impressed. All that said I still was thinking the OT was for me because I expected it to be similar to the Hobie. So I went to a dealer who sells Hobie and OT so I could demo the OT. What I found was the OT took significantly more effort to propel, was slower and the bar in the back of the seat was just awful not matter how I adjusted. I was simply uncomfortable and my legs where not liking the bike motion no matter where I set the seat. After 20 minutes I wanted off the OT. So I bought the Hobie. All your points good/bad on the OT are correct and well stated. Same with the Hobie points good/bad. In the end, either yak is a winner depending on each person and my lesson learned was try before you buy because until you do it's impossible to know for sure. Thanks for putting the time in!

I just bought my first kayak last weekend, I also demoed the OT and found it very hard to peddle compared to the outback. I ended up buying the Outback

Thanks for your insight... I have a 2022 Outback and all of the things you have mentioned are true.. both good and bad. Nice to see it compared and contrasted with the Old Town.

Merci pour la comparaison exhaustive et argumenté. Je cherchais une alternative au Outback et par rapport à ma future utilisation le Old Town me paraît être un bon challenger !

Great video. In my opinion the old town is a way better buy. Old towns hulls are way more stable and dont have cracking issues, For shallow water heavy grass waters the hobie does better though. As far as better build quality and less problems it goes to old town hands down, hobie drives have way more to go wrong,especially the 360 drives
@buildingcodepro9237 Жыл бұрын
I think you mean Old Town is a much better VALUE, and I agree with that. The Hobie has a lot of extras, which if you use, do make them unique buys and a class all their own. I LOVE my hobie, but it has issues. I am pretty sure I'll grow to love the Old Town too, and to be completely honest, I'm battling the cognitive dissonance that comes with being someone who actually bought an Outback. I'm not an Apple, Tesla, LaCroix kinda guy, but I have to admit I liked all the bells and whistles on the Outback. The retractable dohickeys, the dual steering, the molded cup and rod holders, the plethora of mounting options... Really, they can't be compared. The OldTown is a truck, it even looks the same color as the Tonka truck I had as a kid. You really can't break it. It doesn't have bells and whistles, no retractable dohickeys (though the up and out rudder is WAY better than the Outbacks under stow tangle nightmare). So yeah, it's a tough call, depends on how you like your coffee, smart phones, and club memberships.

Epic thanks. I’m looking to beach launch a kayak and it seems the old town is a better option. Simpler and lighter. Better handles.

AWESOME Review and comparrison

I have both and can fish all day pedaling the mirage drive compared to the pdl which will cause faster leg fatigue fishing all day moving around. With that said the oldtown is way more stable than the hobie. I like em both but more so the hobie

A tip for getting the seat on easily is silicone spray on the part that clamps on. Makes it super super easy
@toYOder Жыл бұрын
Yes the pdl causes more drag on the water when u stop pedaling compared to the hobie that keeps gliding when you stop pedaling.

Tackle storage and organization wins on the OB. And pedaling in shallow, weedy waters. But…that hull has the most cracked warranty claims of all Hobie models. And it only comes with a 3yr warranty, vs lifetime on the Old Towns. That alone is worth its weight in gold.
@buildingcodepro9237 Жыл бұрын
At the price of an Outback, the warranty should match the competitors. I didn't account for the value of a lifetime warranty but seeing issues on the Hobie forums, it's clear Hobie lost a lot of loyal fans. That's a tough pill to swallow. I have faith that the new production facility will alleviate the QC and warranty disparity, but Hobie is going to have to come up with something far more robust if they want to compete with the warranty OldTown offers.

With the location of the transducer on the Old Town does side imaging work. I know that is one of the reasons for the Hobie Transducer placement to allow it to be below the hull so SI can work.

Just pick up yak attacks rail part for your old town , and pick up hobies circle hole cover to access your back hatch area to screw and mount the rails with nuts and screws! Just a thought. It’s definitely possible to take your old town out crabbing withe traps to mount down.

I want to buy one or the other..will add a remote tolling motor..which will be better with that installed

I think both will work, though it might be cheaper to just get an oldtown autopilot

Seems like it would be hard to put a stern mounted motor on the PDL with that flip up rudder back there. I need to find some examples. I spend a lot more time in shallow water rivers though so Hobie wins for me.

Many good examples on KZbin showing Newport and Bixpy installs with no holes drilled.

any cracks in the Hobie yet??
@buildingcodepro92374 ай бұрын
No cracks, but I don't use a scupper cart which I think is where most cracks appear. I use a standard kayak cart or my trailer, eliminating that stress on the hull.

Paying a $1000 more for rod holders and mounts is crazy. The 5yr drive warranty alone is worth it.
@buildingcodepro92375 ай бұрын
Agreed. Something else I noticed... EVERY time I go out in the Outback, I come home with water in the hull. Not a lot, but maybe half to one gallon or so. That's "common" in the outback, while the Old Town is bone dry. So far it hasn't been a real problem, but considering my batteries and the occasional wilderness trip with gear in the hull, it's another tick in the box for an Outback win.

The ONLY advantage I see in the Hobie is the drive when you’re in weeds and since I don’t fish much in weeds it’s irrelevant. And $30 worth of rails you can put them everywhere on the Old Town
@kcd8458 ай бұрын
The Old Town is heavier…
@buildingcodepro92378 ай бұрын
It is, but not with the drive removed. And either way, the old town is easier to maneuver on the ground without damage where the hobie rudder is extremely vulnerable. Also the little rope on the hobie handle wears out. I think the ground handling definitely goes to the old town, hands down. Remember, I own and use both, on the same vehicle and the exact same locations and conditions, both ramps and long foot paths on kayak carts.
@kcd8458 ай бұрын
My reply is true and correct, the Old Town is heavier. I don’t know the reason for the rest of your reply
