Honda needs to bring back sport ATVs!
@HondaProKevin
@HondaProKevin 3 жыл бұрын
Ohhh yes, 100% agree! I've been saying that since they dropped their "real" sport ATVs back in 2014. Could you imagine a new 2022 Honda TRX450R with the latest generation CRF450R powerplant? Talk about an animal! We need to see ole reliable back too, the TRX400EX / TRX400X was a tank and hard to kill. Sport SxS models among other things have killed the large market that use to be there though, I started selling them in 2006 and for years their sales just started to taper off until they finally put the nail in the coffin. Sad day...

Honda seriously needs to update their atv lineup. The rancher 420 was state of the art.....in 2007. The rubicon is a decent platform but needs more power. They have plenty of motorcycle engines in the 650-750cc range that would make great atv engines but don’t utilize any of them. A 750cc vtwin making about 60 hp would be a great addition and would sell like crazy. Something to compete with the grizzly and brute force.

I have the top end Rancher that I bought new in 2016 and not much has changed that I can see. I have the Independent suspension and Power Steering. I bought the Limited edition that came in Artic white, which really contrasts with all the black. Just paid it off last yr and it still runs and looks great and I have no complaints. My wife loves to get on it and go, but I don’t think she uses anymore then 1st and 2nd gear. Lol

Oh yeah, gotta love that white! You're correct, your unit is extremely close to what's being sold today. lol that's usually how it goes when they hop on them, which is why a lot of guys buy the DCT models so the misses can easily hop on and you don't have to worry about them messing things up - just put it in auto and go!

Hi. Thank you very, very much for your explanation. Best on the tube. I had two Honda’s in the past. The first being a 1990 300 Fourtrax 2wd then the 1990 300 Fourtrax 4x4. Times have changed. The biggest on the market at the time for HONDA was the 350 foreman which was heavy duty. I had no front lockers and a straight axle. I kept getting stuck in the snow with the 2 Wheel Dr. so this is why I bought the four-wheel-drive but what was nice about it, it was light so if I did get stuck, I would just get off the bike throttle it and lift it out myself. Now the lineup has changed drastically. I am buying another one but I’m not sure if I’m going to get the rancher or the Rubicon. My brother-in-law has the rancher with the independent rear suspension and he loves it, so I’m going to read your review then I will make my decision. Also, I had no idea that one had disc and the other drum brakes. If I go with the rancher, it will be the last model shown with the independent suspension and all the rest of the goodies. I believe in HONDA as I have a Honda accord, a Honda 1332 track driven SNOWBLOWER, a Honda generator and a Honda pressure washer. I have never had a problem with any one of them so this is why I’m sticking with HONDA. Also, I would truly appreciate your input as to which one that you would buy if you were to buy a new one today and what you would think would be the best Honda on the market today for what I would use it for.The Rubicon, the Rancher or any other. I’m not looking for speed, I’m just looking for something to go in the woods with and play in the mud or any rough terrain with somewhat slow speeds. Suitable power and plenty of low end torque. I tried a side by side and did not like it, so I will definitely buy a four wheeler and not the side-by-side. Once again, thank you very much for your explanation. You clarified everything and I wish there were more people like you who are putting facts not fiction. You put a real review as to all the different specs. Have a great summer my friend and thank you again. Now I’m going to watch the rubicon reviews. Cheers to you sir. JIMMY MAC, New Brunswick Canada.

Thanks a million for the kind words bud, I really appreciate it... lol you're not kidding, times have definitely changed! It's crazy to think the old 300 and 350 models were considered "big" at the time and now they look like child's toys next to the "smaller" models we have today. If you would've said back then that ATVs would have some of the features they have today, or cost as much etc, we would've said you're crazy lol but here we are. Thanks again for the awesome comment and support, take care and if you run into any questions when deciding on which Honda, just let me know ;)

@@HondaProKevin Thanks for getting back to me. We get 7 months of snow so I need a bit of power so I think I’ll go with the 520 Rubicon. I haven’t had a chance to watch your video, but I’ll watch it today and get back to you. If I go with the rubicon, I’ll get the dual clutch and power steering. Thanks again. I truly appreciate your input. I had an Ariens snow blower many years ago and a gentleman educated me on the Honda snowblower and it’s been Honda ever since. I truly believe that you get what you pay for and with any Honda product, they may be a bit more expensive, but I’d rather pay a bit more and ride, rather than buy a cheap model and having to have it serviced every second day. Thanks again Kevin. My first Honda product was a 1983 750 Nighthawk. I still have it and it runs like the day I bought it new in 83. Cheers buddy.

Thank you for the kind words... I'm sorry to hear about what happened with your company, it's a shame that it's happening to many businesses these days and maaan is 22 years a long time. It hit me hard as that place was my home for 14 years and everything revolved around it as I had created this online "brand" around it which was just a side thing at the time. I got to play with the toys I loved every day, it was hard to call it "work". It's funny how small of a world it is, odds are if you bought an ATV from 2006 until 12/31/20 then it was probably me you dealt with there unless it was during a short period of time that we had other salesmen hired but they didn't last long as it was always hard to find good help. Fingers crossed this works out on KZbin and my HondaProKevin.com blog that I've had for a few years now and I can continue on living the dream of getting to play with stuff I love and support my family at the end of the day. I'll be down at Southern Honda Powersports from time to time shooting videos so we might run into each other. Was down there a couple of days ago doing some ATVs that they had in and they have more to choose from than the vast majority of dealers as inventory is still hard to come by due to the whole corona situation. Were you looking to pick up a Rancher this time around or something else? Thank you again for the kind and supportive words, I really appreciate it bud. And sorry for the long winded reply lol.

@@HondaProKevin im going to get the new foreman rubicon dct eps. I have a Polaris sportsman 570 currently which is a 2019 model that ive only had for about a year but i miss shifting gears and if i miss the automatic the rubicon has that covered as well but one thing i will miss a little is the extra power of the Polaris engine but the honda has more of what i want than the Polaris does even though it lacks on power it’s still better for my needs. If Honda made some upgrades to the rincon 680 like locking front diff power steering low range then that’s what I’d be getting lol but im sure im not the only one that dreams about that.

I think a potentially new Honda 300 (299cc) 4x4 2022 Model, with the same dimensions as the original would sale.... as it would be a compact 4x4 atv... since the Rancher 350 replaced the Fourtrax 300, and got bigger, and bigger.... drifting quite a ways away from the 300 4x4 fourtrax from the 90's... those things would go places....
@HondaProKevin
@HondaProKevin 3 жыл бұрын
You're 100% spot on with what Honda needs to build and I've been saying the same thing for over a decade now lol. I have people come in all the time wanting a smaller 4x4, something around the size of the Recon 250 which is very similar to how the old FourTrax 300. It's funny to look back at ATVs and motorcycles etc and what used to be considered "big" is now a child's toy lol. A new Recon is coming with some new goodies and I hope an optional 4x4 model is going to be there too but I have my doubts on it actually happening. If Honda could keep its price down, it would sell like hot cakes but if it comes in around $5,499 - it'll be a difficult one to pull off incredible sales numbers as you'll just have a few that wouldn't want to just pay $1,000 more and get the Rancher 4x4. I'm guessing at the $5,499 as the 2020 Recon came in at $4,299 / $4,549. If you were to add new changes to the engine, EFI and a few other misc tweaks then the price will go up a couple to few hundred bucks so now we're starting around $4,500. Add in a 4x4 model and in the past with Honda when they've built 2x4 and 4x4 models, it was about a $1,000 bump. It's a difficult one to pull off when you look at the numbers and how it would fit into the lineup, whether or not it could pull those numbers and still be a profitable endeavor - I think it's all up to just how cool the thing is lol.

Considering buying a new 2021 4x4 foot/manual shift model (FM1). Do you think this is more or less reliable than the higher trim models? Great video!
@HondaProKevin
@HondaProKevin 3 жыл бұрын
That's a difficult question to answer and one I've been asked a million times over the years lol ;) . Theoretically speaking, yes, the FM1 should be more reliable as it does have less moving parts and less to go wrong 10-20 years down the road. That's not to say models with DCT, EPS, ES etc are less reliable though as I've seen firsthand over the last 15 years just how reliable they are and I wouldn't hesitate to own one with those extra features but there's no getting around the fact that when you add more complexity, there's a chance things can go wrong. And needless to say, none of us want to be the one stuck with a unit that has issues as they do pop up from time to time. Long story short as I could ramble on for quite a while on this subject lol. Hope the info was of some help bud and best of luck on the ATV hunt! Thank you for the kind words as well.

@HondaProKevin
@HondaProKevin 3 жыл бұрын
The new ES models are night and day when it comes to how well they shift compared to the early generations as your 2000 was one of their firsts. Some people still prefer going with a manual shift or DCT but the ES is 100% better than it was so I would definitely try one out before you pull the trigger. The solenoids are a lot more reliable too so you don't have to worry about them like you did back in the day.

It was the Cadillac of atv's when I bought it new but it needs replaced now and I would like to have a 2-up because my wife & I ride double on it. Why won't Honda upgrade the Rincon with even power steering? I love the gear drive auto transmission and don't want to go back to a belt drive to get what I want.

@HondaProKevin 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words and support, I really appreciate it! Keep your eyes peeled. Honda has some new models in store and I think you're going to like it... Oh yeah, the Rincon was the Cadillac and the best of the best back in the day. It was Honda's flagship ATV. But when you go almost 20 years without a major redesign and your other models to get updates, they start to catch up and now the Rubicon kills the Rincon when it comes to features and tech. The only thing it doesn't have on it is horsepower currently. The only thing I've been told as to why Honda didn't add their EPS to the current Rincon chassis is because of clearances. You can still get a gear driven automatic from Honda and get your power steering, you just have to give up the horsepower to do it - sadly lol. They've got something cooking though...

These machines are wild 😜 They will climb a hill that u think there is no way humanly possible to get up. And it’s able to Do Farm work as well. Pull, plow, anything ✅

Perfect explanation, thank you for that. For hauling a yard cart is there any difference in rear suspension for capacity? And how much does straight vs rear suspension make when trail riding? New to quads and I'm comparing the rancher to a gator. Thanks.
@philipjean1086
@philipjean1086 2 жыл бұрын
I would say it is the time on machine that makes the difference on suspension on any vehicle. If your using a quad for under an hour trips not much difference between IRS and straight axle if your going on a 2 to3 hr long trip IRS is the way to go your body will not hurt as bad. The opposite is true for hauling straight axle would be better if you use quad for towing heavy loads. Hope this is helpful

Oh yeah, you're perfectly fine towing with a DCT model. Models with a Low range and DCT like the Rubicon, Honda recommends towing in Low. The only models Honda doesn't put a tow rating on are the models that don't come with a hitch setup to tow like the Recon and Rincon.

Do all ES transmissions have the selectable ‘auto’ vs ‘handlebar switch’? Do you have to get the eps to get the automatic mode?
@HondaProKevin
@HondaProKevin 3 жыл бұрын
No, you will only find the "auto" modes on the DCT automatic models. The ES models will always have to be shifted with the Electric Shift controls, no automatic mode. No, you don't have to get EPS to have an automatic mode option. You can buy the Honda FourTrax Rancher DCT IRS 4x4 (TRX420FA5) and you'll have the automatic mode without EPS. Hopefully that makes sense lol ;)
@Upliftyourbrothers

@@HondaProKevin ok. So their is 3 transmission options. 1. Foot shift 2. ES 3. DCT (which is rider selectable ES or auto mode) Is the dct a completely different transmission than the ES? Or is it just given the feature of auto mode? Thank you!
@HondaProKevin
@HondaProKevin 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly, those are your three different transmission options for the Rancher lineup. The DCT transmission is completely different from the ES when it comes to internals and how it works etc. Think of the ES transmission internals as being just like the foot shift but there is an electronic solenoid that changes the gears when you click the ES buttons on the handlebar instead of using your foot. The DCT setup is a style of automatic transmission, one that allows you to use the auto mode for a fully automatic transmission or flip the button to be able to change gears manually with the up and down buttons on the left handlebar (similar to if it was an ES in that case). Think of the up and down arrow buttons as being like paddle shifters in a car where you can flip from auto to manual mode. The only thing similar to an ES transmission and a DCT is that you have buttons on the handlebar to shift with. How it all functions etc are completely different. You're more than welcome, hopefully the info helps. Honda likes to make their ATV lineup as confusing as possible and I've seen many salesmen over the years pass along incorrect info that then just turns around and confuses people even more lol.

lol that's a good question! We might see a new Rincon by 2040... We'll see a new Recon before we see a new Rincon. A new Rincon 1000 DCT is definitely past due with the current Rincon unit being super close to hitting 20 years old with no noticeable changes other than going EFI and the 30cc bump in 2006.
