What does a gear reduction do

Around here a lot of people put big tires and riding mud. The gear reduction reduces the ratio in the transmission to make it easier for the engine to turn larger tires over.

Why does the washer not go back on the crankshaft gear when it's on the stock one?

The gear on the aftermarket reduction is thicker and doesn't have the relief cut in it for the factory washer.
