I have had my i30 N for a mere 250km now and I'm glad someone else has been caught out with the occasional stall! I had been questioning whether I should hand back my licence :) It just seems to have a tiny delay coming off idle. Coming from a Golf R tuned to 280kw this is just so much more fun and engaging to drive - especially through the turns. When the wheels light up in 2nd gear you always want for 4WD again, but this is a small trade off for things like price etc. Just needs some more finesse on the right foot!

The value for money proposition is other-worldly with this thing! No doubt about it, the track warranty, four doors, reliability, performance, styling. Thanks for doing a great review on the 2021 facelift, with a MANUAL. Too many other videos on here show the DCT (which is undoubtedly a masterpiece of a transmission in its own right too). I really did consider the i20 N for a long time, but I've had the 1.6T in the Veloster Turbo previously, and whilst it was a great car, I wanted something with a bit more 'grunt' this time around. Plus, the exhaust pops/crackles are unbeatable with the i30 N imo. Took a test drive of this vehicle in manual and loved it. I will agree the clutch is definitely heavy, but it's what I've been wanting. Too many cars out there have a 'light' clutch. Sometimes it feels like you're not even pressing it. Not so with this car. You definitely know when you're on it. 😅 I couldn't help myself, I placed an order yesterday! Basically the exact same car as what's shown here. Now to wait 6-7 months...🙏😅

Great video as always, Tish! I’ve had the pleasure to drive the Veloster N (we don’t get the i30 here in the colonies, but it’s the same car) I drove the 6 speed and the DCT - which is truly amazing. Honestly just as good as DSG - but despite that, I’d still get the manual. I agree about the interior; it was the same in the Veloster. Hyundai has been doing some really good interiors lately, but this is an unfortunate exception; it just felt really cheap. I’m glad you brought up Biermann - he was the chief engineer of every M3 apart from the current G80, and you do feel the magic he helped put into the N. I truly fell in love with the Veloster N, and if I was in a situation where I couldn’t necessarily afford a nicer car, I’d probably get one. Plus, Hyundai/Kia has a 10 year/100k mile warranty in the US, which adds even more peace of mind.

Great review Tish, albeit I am a little late watching it. I have a near new i30N 6 speed manual here in Perth, Australia. It shares daily driving duties with an F80 M3 Competition, yes, I am a fan of Albert Biermann developed products. There are a few Biermann giveaways like the amber segments on the tachometer until the car has warmed up as well as the customisable driving modes. You are absolutely spot on in terms of driving this car though. People get into it and because they think its fast, they are all big heavy feet and heavy hands and I laugh when they stall it. The car is actually fastest and responds best when driven with anticipation and a light touch.
@silo_fx31822 жыл бұрын
Cool review. Think you summed this car up very well. My 2 cents is that the interior and ICE engine are on the way out. Hyundai have not updated this generation as it was not worth it. Analogue gages are another good example of this. With that said, I have ordered my i30N (New Zealand) in the exact spec in your clip. Performance blue (no, not girly - sets off the black and red nice and is the N range brand colour). 6 sp manual, no sunroof, performance seats. Seems to be exactly what you have tested. The interior being bland and understanded is kind of appealing to me. Love that simple vibe with all the money going into the chassis and driving experience. I believe this is the last of this kind of old school hot hatch, so very happy with this model. Get the car while as much as possible it is still analogue. Was your exhaust in Sport+ mode when you did the sound checks? Sounded more like normal mode? Maybe it was just the clip audio? One thing anyone can do is Google the thousands of i30N exhaust sound KZbins to hear the sounds. Ironically, the lary exhaust was not one of the main factors I chose this over other hot hatches. Note that in NZ, European cars are hellish expensive to buy and service. Not the same playing field as the UK or Europe. Lucky you guys 🙂. The spec I wanted as listed was reasonably less expensive than the base Golf GTI and there or thereabouts the Focus ST. Yes, I did drive the DCT before picking the manual. Was very, very good. Decided to go with the full 'driver purist' order as I don't need the car for commuting every day and the difference in performance specs is seriously not worth worrying about. Both excellent.

I also stall it from time to time, and I think I know why. With a cold engine, especially in winter, low end torque (below 2000 rpm) is barely enough for the crankshaft to rotate itself. The reason is physics, it is unavoidable. Because of high power, it works with high internal temperature, so the inernal gaps must be a bit larger. After a few minutes, when it gets to the temperature, the low end torque become as expected.

Why wouldn’t I go for the i30N? Well, I’m not 20 anymore and the GTI is just a better engineered vehicle, especially for daily driving. To be honest, I’d rather buy a Mk 7.5 Golf R, used, than this new. Sorry Natisha, this one’s for children. For this much money I don’t want to settle. I want the refined interior, I want the subtle exterior, but most of all, I want a suspension that can handle the power and be comfortable too.
@telelaci23 жыл бұрын
Why would you buy a hot-hatch at all, if you want a comfortable and reserved car and you are willing to pay much more than this? You are an old man not a children anymore, why hot hatch? The used vs. new is a silly comparison, you could buy i30N also used 22k, and it's still under warranty. A 4WD Golf R will always cost much more. " I want a suspension that can handle the power..." - it's about tires mostly and not the suspension at all, just the girl doesn't know what and why. She thinks the tires spin because of suspension and the differential, haha she's funny. In Britain you'll have wet road 60%, how will you put down 300hp on the road, if that is the most important parameter?
@AutoSocialUK3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for trying to offend me…. I like how you assume I’m a girl I don’t know what I’m talking about. Bold of you to comment on someone else’s comment and not to me directly 🤔 If you watched the video I say that DESPITE their best efforts with upgraded slip-diff and tyres it still struggles BUT likely any FWD with that power will. It’s not going to perform like a 4WD and no one should expect it to. Btw the roads were completely dry.
@AutoSocialUK3 жыл бұрын
George, thank you for your comment. That is a fair point, the Golf is more refined and will be a better daily. This type of power will always be better handled with a 4WD. I need to get my hands on more VW stuff, It was a key on this channel for a while but VW are hard to get in with.
@telelaci23 жыл бұрын
@@AutoSocialUK It was not an offence, but a fact that you blamed the e-LSD for the bad traction at the end of the video you mentioned the tyres too. And a guy who never seen this car and never tried it already accepted your theory and he wants a car with a better suspension that can handle the power properly. The LSD is not part of the suspension, but a device what helps to distribute the torque between the driven wheels. Normally it helps in curve when the weight (therefore the friction is different). But if you punch in the pedal in a straight road in gear 3 with a 300hp car, any FWD or even AWD car will do the same, starts to spin and slip madly. No LSD can help on that. You said a silly thing and it doesn't matter if you are a girl or boy. Probably you donno what is the purpose of the LSD and when can be useful. And now you make a gender question from it, you were offended by a macho because you are a female. I didn't criticize the video and directly you, because it's not remarkable thing and I don care what you know about cars and what you don't. But George has taken up the theory from you ! This silly little detail he adopted, and after you now he believes that something is wrong with the i30N and it can't transmit the torque like other regular cars, because something is wrong with the suspension it's not pefect. So he needs a 4WD car. Hmmm. "Btw the roads were completely dry." - and tomorrow will be wet, then dry again. You are unlucky if you live in Britain and you want perfect power transmission on the roads, because you'll will need to put up rain tyres every other day. What I meant: it's a silly idea to expect perfect grip from a car especially in a country where the roads are wet (with a little mud too) very often, and you can't do anything with that. You should move to Italy if the perfect grip is the most important paramater, and you want to put all 300hp on the road.
@afcgeo8823 жыл бұрын
@@telelaci2 You’re the only one making these assumptions here, mate. First, I have driven both. I also want a hot hatch because I already have a Rav4 hybrid for everything else and I want a more fun commute/enjoyment car, not that you’re the car police and it’s any of your business. Second, not all suspensions are created equal and not all differentials are as well. There is such a thing as too much power or weight for a system to handle. Having already driven the Sonata N and Kona N I can tell you a great deal about that. The Sonata, having just an open differential, spins a random front tyre every time you try to drive with gusto, and you lose practical traction when pressing the throttle coming out of a turn. The Kona, despite the same engine, has far less of that slippage due to the eLSD. However, because it’s so light and powerful, it still sees a limit to what it can accomplish. The Golf R has a similar power to weight ratio, but because of its active torque distribution AWD feels far more reassuring off the line and in higher speed turns, and as a result can be driven faster. The GTI has an eLSD, but it also has quite a bit less power. Don’t forget that the computer mapping in eLSDs also plays a role. Some engage and disengage faster and smarter than others. Are tyres important? Yes, but they all come with very competent tyres from the manufacturer, unlike your basic cars, which come with the cheapest rubber that can be found. Finally, there have been many fantastic female race car drivers that are FAR more knowledgeable about cars than you or I will ever be. Your misogyny is ridiculous and seriously unwelcome. To be honest, any amount of actual knowledge or experience you may have is made moot by your disgusting self-righteousness. As you’ve stated, you don’t care about Natisha’s opinion on cars, or mine. Why then are you watching this channel or commenting on my opinion? Go make your own channel and belittle everyone there!

The first gen cars were just under £30k for the I30N performance. Drive it like a muppet and yes 20 mpg but I got 27 in mine not hanging around but still legal speed limit. Motorway it is possible to get 40 mpg with cruise set at 70 mph. The I30N needs 4 wheel drive or rear wheel drive to educe the wheel hop crash when you plant your right foot. Nice first try but I would have thought Hyundai would have done more than change the front bumper and lights with the refresh car.,

I guess they thought, If it's not broke.... then don't fix it.

@@AutoSocialUK Yes I loved my car but wheel hop / tramping really annoying. I wonder if the I30N standard car did it with coil spring suspension ?
@RB-lt8kt2 жыл бұрын
@@AutoSocialUK Well wheel hop is a fix they need to get right.

I’m not sure the Veloster will be around for much longer. They’re discontinuing all, but N models in the States next year and I doubt the sales of the N will be big enough to keep it going.
