The reviewer notes that the Hyundai Santa Fe HEV doesn't "quite get the mpg" of its rivals. While true, no one ever mentions the reason for this The reason the Toyotas consistently exceed in mpg is because their hybrid engines are all mated to CVT transmissions ... everything from the Prius, through the Highlander. The Sante Fe HEV mates its 1.6T to a conventional six-speed automatic transmission. That six speed is THE reason why the Santa Fe produces all that wonderful, smooth torque, while a similarly-powered Toyota (e.g. the RAV4 or Venza) give you that under-powered acceleration sound of a baby wanting its bottle. The trade offs: Hyundai - lower mpg but much better quiet acceleration and torque; a conventional, smooth feeling of automatic shifting. Toyota - Better mpg, but more sluggish "moaning" acceleration; less torque; comparatively lower-maintenance CVT (Note: Hyundai has never had notable problems with its conventional transmissions).

@@MJT-DA You obviously haven't been in a modern CVT. True some manufacturers are still making sub par CVT's but the majority of them provide a better feel and mpg than a traditional transmission. It doesn't really matter anyway, with EV's bound to taking over the world in the next 15-20 years and traditional transmissions only being relegated to luxury vehicles, you won't have a choice soon.

@@naughtysauce4323 most of genesis line up uses regular planetary gearsets and are selling better than the Infiniti CVT suvs because of refinement. Not saying all cvts are bad Honda and Hyundai in my opinion did a good job but Toyota and Nissan I still find their CVTs jerky. Before I get a car with a CVT i rather get a full electric car just because cvt transmission suck for me in general and like all of them they are prone to failure. I worked at a garage I've seen so many cvt vs regular automatics issues
@theburgermeister72143 жыл бұрын
You wrote all that to forget the main reason toyotas get better gas mileage is the awd system. Toyota doesn't use a mechanical link. Ford Honda and Hyundai do. Only the battery in the pack powers toyota rear wheels, other manufacturers use a traditional mechanical system. It effects mpg more than the transmission setup mr know it all.

The electric motor filling in until the turbo spools up is brilliant engineering. However, having an electric motor kinda makes having a turbo pointless in this application. I'd rather have a smaller N/A engine with a stronger electric motor instead of a turbo for better engine longevity & reliability but, kudos to whomever at Hyundai implemented that function into this powertrain.

So what happens if you do not put your hands on the wheel and steer a bit? Does the Highway assist system pull over safely to the side of the road and stop? Several years ago I had a wave of sleepiness wash over me out of nowhere, in the morning, not long into an all day drive. The rumble strips on the side of the road woke me back up. I thought any system that can detect that and pull over safely would be worth big $$$. The last time I went car shopping, in 2015, I was not convinced anything on the market at the time was an answer, maybe Subaru?
@Alan-wc9vo3 жыл бұрын
No it doesn’t pull you over. First it alerts you with a sound and by displaying a sign to keep your hand on the steering wheel on the gauge cluster. If you do not put your hand on the steering wheel, after a few moments it will start alerting you with a more urgent sound/beeping. And if you still don’t do it, the car will automatically start to slow down and come to a stop.
@edwardzdankiewicz90683 жыл бұрын
@@Alan-wc9vo Thank you sir, Interesting times in the car buying world. That the car is smart enough to tell the driver is unresponsive and smart enough to come to a complete stop is amazing. But to do it in a traffic lane seems like not quite doing enough. It should head to the right shoulder and then stop. If it has blind spot monitoring it seems doable.

I would stay away from any Hyundai product like the plague.. In my experience the only thing worse than the reliability of Hyundai is the way Hyundai treats their customers. I own a 2017 Hyundai Sonata PHEV, which experienced hybrid system failure on i95 (nearly causing an accident) on Aug 31, 2021. Two months later, during which time the Hyundai dealer made two unsuccessful repair attempts, I picked up my car only to have Hybrid system failure occur for the third time before I even made it to the first traffic light. The service center then told me the car (under warranty) needs a new battery pack, which I have been waiting for over the past FIVE months. The car has been out of service for SEVEN months and Hyundai has refused all buyback attempts. I bought a new Rav4 Prime in Feb…..If I ever get my Hyundai back it will be sold.

Far better than the 2019 Tiguan I just traded for the Santa Fe Hybrid. So far after about 1000 miles, I'm getting ~34 mpg for both highway and around town. I've seen as much as 36 mpg on a 210 mile highway trip. I've also noticed that the vehicle will run on electric only at 60-70 mph for ~2 minutes before an engine powered battery recharge. My next vehicle will need to go over some mountain passes regularly and I worry about that engines ability to pull a car up the mountains at 75mph around 5k rpm. My last question is whether you think the fuel economy being on the low side for an SUV that size should dissuade you from choosing the hybrid version? It seems kind of weird to purchase a hybrid that gets similar fuel economy to an old Ford Escape hybrid
