Many John Deere products make their way all the way to the butt-end of the world, to our wonderful little island of Tasmania. I have a new S120 set to be delivered next week, and it makes me very happy that I can buy something 'Made in the USA'. (I lived in Georgia for a decade, and still have a soft spot for Tennessee.) I am glad that I watched your video, because I have now asked the dealer to install the 'old style' oil filter. My neighbor has four big John Deere tractors, and the yellow & green machines are very common here on the island that the world forgot.
@pierrejoubert6812 жыл бұрын
I just watched a few videos of people converting back to the simple filter, and saw the price of the John Deere cartridge. A figure of anything from $40 to $70 has been mentioned, which means that it will be way of a hundred Ozzie dollars. The dealer is charging me that amount for the 'back' conversion, but I still think it was a wise decision.

Would there be any benefit in buying this mowers from the John Deere store vs buying it from a store like Lowe’s? Or there’s no difference?
@WesternEquipment3 жыл бұрын
The benefit of buying from a John Deere dealership is that your machine will have been set-up by a technician. This means it is more likely that all of the proper steps were taken to make sure this machine is ready to go right off the showroom floor. Sometimes things get missed, like tires being inflated to the correct pressure and the deck being level. So you still want to check these things. Also when you buy from a dealership they will have you and your machine on file so they can let you know about any service specials and they can keep record of when you had work done if needed. Great question by the way!

Just bought this mower today at Home Depot. After watching your video, I don't even need to bother with the manual to get started mowing when it's delivered next week. Got lucky as it was the last one in stock. On that note, I'd been to numerous stores looking for a mower and most were out of everything except the most expensive zero turn mowers due to (as they said) "supply chain issues due to Covid." I've heard the same thing from grocery stores as per certain items that they've had a hard time getting. I live in Tennessee not too many miles from where John Deere makes these mowers so I guess that made the difference in availability. Lucky me! Lol.

The oil fitting on blade spindles, are the bearings open not shielded so the grease accually gets to the bearings, a lot of manufacturers have shielded bearings so the fittings are useless

I just ordered an S120 and saw that a lot of people are converting back to a traditional oil filter system. I have noticed though that some of the people converting who have KZbin videos are changing the oil when the tractor is warm which is incorrect for the 30 sec Oil Change should be done cold. So is it that these people are not doing the oil change correctly or is the 30 sec Oil Change truly not changing all or most of the oil?
@WesternEquipment3 жыл бұрын
It is true that with the 30 sec oil change that you are only changing part of the oil. But you have a much larger filter that is preloaded with fresh oil in the filter itself. I hope this answers your question and thanks for watching!

Brent I have a quick question. I have a new S120. Put a bagger on it but I did not change the blades. I just cut the grass and it was a little damp ( not wet) and the grass kept clogging up the chute. I haven't had an issue since I got it but then again I didn't cut it damp before, it was always completely dry. Could it be the blades? Could it be that it was just damp and I need to wait until it's completely dry? What's your thoughts?
@WesternEquipment3 жыл бұрын
Good question. I think this is a mixture of both. I would definitely put on high lift blades when using a bagger to get the most air flow possible. Also any moisture at all will always make the grass sticky, making it harder to make its way all the way back to the chute. I know this is a pain but unfortunately it is the one drawback to bagging systems. Thanks for watching!

@WesternEquipment2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it will fit in a midsize. They are a pretty tight fit in a full size. Good question and thanks for watching!

We just moved to Pennsylvania from New York and this whole grass thing is new to me. In the city we don't have grass but I stayed up till 2am watching your videos I'm interested in the S120 from the home depot.

Update went to the Home Depot and purchased the S120 also the tow behind broadcast spreader, the thatcher/aerator all in one and the tow behind sweeper. With my Veterans Discount I saved $460. P.S thanks for your video you did at Lowe's/Home Depot because their extended warranty was really good and your video helped on my decision!!

If getting a new mower, especially from a box store, would you recommend removing the deck and checking blade sharpness as part of the first time setup?
@WesternEquipment3 жыл бұрын
I would say it definitely wouldn't hurt. This usually shouldn't be an issue unless the mower has been sitting outside in the weather for an entire year and then I might be a bit concerned about rust. Thanks for watching!

Yes you can! Now the question is how do you want to do it? You could just mow them, or you could put a mulch kit/plug on and really mulch them up, you could put a bagger on to mulch and pick them up, or you could get a lawn sweeper and pick them up that way. I hope this was helpful and thanks for watching!

Great video - thank you. question about the spring assisted chute, can you confirm that it doesn't rise to vertical? I'm thinking about getting through a 46" gate. Thanks.
@WesternEquipment3 жыл бұрын
Thank you and by specs with the deflector raised you should be at 46.5" so i think you will be able to squeeze that .5" through the gate. Thanks for watching!
@sptrader63163 жыл бұрын
Use a bungee cord to hold the chute vertical, until you get through the gate. I do that when I store it in the garage, to gain another foot or so, of space.

I'm looking to buy. I just started looking today. But I'm sure we have experts here that already did a lot of research. Should I go with John Deere or Husqvarna? I have a half an acre of land and I don't mind getting a lawn mover a little bit more than I need. So I'm looking for under $3,000. But I can probably do very well with one around $2,000.

If you’re torn between the two I would definitely lean John Deere. Service and parts will just be easier to find and the John Deere will have the frame to last you longer. Thanks for watching!

I bought this model recently, always bought the la102 or 105 in past because I could not afford the hydrostatic. My question is how does this model compare to the x series that run 2 k more, i thought this has everything like the gas gauge and twin cylinder engine, i do love briggs and stratton engines. I guess I really want to know if there is any difference in ride quality or cutting?

Great video - very insightful. Quick question - I am looking into the s140 and was wondering if there is any concern in regards to the 22HP Engine powering the 3 blade system? I noticed it is the same engine used for the smaller models with the 2 blade and smaller deck so I wanted to know if I should have any worries going with the s140? Any info would be super appreciated. Thank you!
@WesternEquipment3 жыл бұрын
No I would not be worried about it at all. It is plenty of horsepower for that deck. The 48" deck was ran by an 18.5HP engine on some previous model so you shouldn't have any problem! Great question and thanks for watching!

@WesternEquipment3 жыл бұрын

Brent, I am buying my stepson a s120 or a s130 with the bagger. Temporarily storing outside until i can build him a shed. JD sells a cover for the tractor. Is there a cover available for the bagger? Is there one less drive belt on the s130 due to the elect. pto?
@WesternEquipment3 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is a cover that will cover this mower with the bagger installed too. Here is a link to it parts.west-equip.com/john-deere-lawn-mower-and-material-collection-system-cover-lp70686/. And no there are still two belt on this mower. The blade engagement is just done by and electric clutch rather than by a cable pulling a tensioner tight.
@robertlackey21433 жыл бұрын
@@WesternEquipment Thanks for the quick reply! Has there been any failures yet of the elect. pto clutch? I wish you were local to purchase from. TY.
@WesternEquipment3 жыл бұрын
You’re welcome! And just like anything there has been failures at times but they are few and far between. Most of the time we see these issues once the mower has quite a few hours and years on it. But these mowers do come with a 2-year/120 hour warranty and there are options to purchase additional warranty if you have concerns. And hopefully in the future we will have the ability to sell mowers all over!

Great, informative channel. I purchased a JD S120 mower at Home Depot last week, and I'm waiting for it to be delivered. Saw it in person and it seemed well made. I compared it to a Troy-Bilt "Bronco" riding mower next to it, and the Troy-Bilt seemed poor quality compared to the JD. To top it off, the rear left tire was completely flat. I digress....One question I did have with the JD S120 is the Quick Oil Change kit. I heard that once you replace the kit it doesn't remove all the old oil from the engine (not sure how true that is). Wouldn't defeat the purpose of changing the kit if the old oil is still left inside the engine?
@WesternEquipment3 жыл бұрын
Yes this is true, the filter is preloaded with oil and only replaces about 40% of the dirty oil but the filter is much larger which adds more filtering surface area to clean the remaining dirty oil. This can always be converted back to a standard filter and drain system if desired. Great questions and I hope you enjoy your new mower. Thanks for watching!
@sptrader63163 жыл бұрын
With the quick change oil filter system, you can still drain the rest of the oil, if you want to. There is a drain plug on the right side of the engine. You'll just have to add extra oil, after the filter change and oil draining.
