2021 KTM 500 EXC-F OIL CHANGE

Always pre-charge the main filter before re-installing. It will protect the engine by saving time in oil circulation. Surprisingly you will find that you can fill it up and it soak upo a lot of oil in its paper element and will not spill much when you put it in. Do it with all vehicle filters in every oils change.

Best to drain oil hot, to capture most debri, oil filter hole is supposed to be filled 1/3 up with oil before installing oil filter (this helps saturate the oil filter and prefills the crank oil channel) for early start lubing , a $50 ktm kit with all new screens and orings is not needed till way down the road, just the filter is needed, less than $10.

My 2009 400 exc-w has two difficult to reach oil filters makes such a mess also looks like they went away from the Allen bolt on lower Drain screen. Easy to strip, i know from experience. Nice to see Kim improving the little things.

super unnecessary to buy a whole new oil screen and plug, you just need to clean the screen and keep the metal plug, its metal. start with the oil drain plug first, drain the oil, remove short oil screen under the engine, remove oil screen next to drain plug. clean all screens and bolts. reassemble everything and torque to spec. remove oil filter, fill oil filter houseing 1/3 of the way full of oil, install new filter. rub oil around o ring on oil filter cap, install cap torque to spec, fill bike 1.2 ltr of cross power 4t 10w 50 and your done.

Yeah, I agree. You really only need a new oil filter. I have a 6 year extended warranty with unlimited miles, in order to not void the warranty you have to keep receipts of all services you perform yourself. It’s about $40 for the KTM kit, I’ll keep an eye out for a more affordable option.

@@PNW.Voyager Don't forget to lay the bike on its side and fill the oil filter housing 1/3 or 1/2 up before inserting the new oil filter. Or, alternatively, before you start it back up, hold the kill switch and the starter button at the same time, so the oil filter housing and oil filter get adequate oil into them before the engine starts.

U run the 4t for 8hrs then put synthetic oil in it and dont forget to tip bike on its side and fill the filter cavity up alittle

I know it’s only for a few second but soak that oil filter! Dry top end no good. Unless the 2018 and that beautiful 2021 have changed directions in owners manual! That’s a sweet bike. I like how u changed everything! Screens, crush washers, o rings. The bike is worth it. I wouldn’t lie. Vortex and fmf. Get rid of reeds. It’s a new faster bike.

Save yourself a ton of money and just buy a filter on its own from the dealer with a crush washer. Those filter screens are reusable. I don’t understand the idea of changing out the metal drain/filter plugs. I can only imagine how much that kit cost lol. If you haven’t changed out the fuel filter it’s a good idea to do that. I’ve seen those plugged up with white crap from when they model the tank.

That’s really good! We’ve done a few now as a few of my friends purchased 500s at the same time, all had metal. :/ we are all at about 800 miles and multiple changes now, all looking good. I was very worried, the 6 year extended warranty with no deductible has taken a lot of worry away though.

Absolutely not! There should be no metal, especially no chucks of metal in the oil. Take that shit back and have them replace it.

Oil filter removal, which the video does not show is a p.i.t.a! You don't need special reverse grip pliers though. A suction cup, like on the end of a scrub brush works perfectly. You're welcome. lol

It’s not uncommon to find this the first oil change. The second and third have been good. This is why it’s very important to do that first break in service at about 30 miles
