mahsa mmdz But that shouldn't matter. For example you can say that person is German and speaks German. Or that person is French and speaks French. The same way you can say: that person is Persian and speaks Persian. I've heard of Persian poetry but I've never heard anyone say Farsi poetry. Persian has always been the correct word in English and just a decade ago I never heard anyone say Farsi when speaking English so as a British person I find it really weird that some people (especially Americans) have only recently started saying Farsi instead.

@@sophiewood6476 I know what you're saying but referring to the language as Persian sounds weird to me cause we call our language Farsi. Idk what French people or German people call their language but I know Persian people call it Farsi(فارسی).

As an Arabic native speaker, I think the fairest reason to learn Arabic is for communicating, travelling, learning about culture and reading literature. Arabic is one of the richest languages in terms of vocabulary and grammar therefore it might take a lot of time to learn it and especially to be good in grammar. Wish you best of luck! Also, I love your content.

You did good in choosing Arabic farsi and Urdu together as they are languages that firstly share a really similar script with each other its just that farsi and Urdu have a few extra letters to that of Arabic. You will also find that the three languages share a lot of vocabulary, with Arabic heavily influencing farsi and Urdu, and farsi heavily influencing Urdu due to the history of the languages and how they interacted with each other. I hope your goals for this year in language learning are successful. Thank you

Hi Phoenix, First, Chúc Mừng Năm Mới. That's "happy new year" in Vietnamese. I've recently found out about your channel and I'm a big fan of your enthusiasm. I love your strategy based approach to learning languages. I'm a native Vietnamese speaker but also considered myself fluent in English having studied the language for 20 years. I'm also interested in Language as a bio-cognitive process. Currently, I'm teaching English in Vietnam to get by amidst the pandemic but I'm taking a cert for data science in Python and R to be able to get to a PhD program in some sort of comparative cognition/linguistic program. If you want to have a practice partner in Vietnamese, I'll be willing to provide some help. I'm interested in practicing Spanish as well (I lived in Ecuador for 5 months and Barcelona for another 10 but never really took learning this language seriously).

it's not like you can't learn multiple languages at the same time, but it can get counter-productive if you learn two similar ones (like italian and french) and you're beginner in both. Personally, I think the best would be to learn two distant languages (ex. Italian and Japanese) or being advanced in one and beginner in the other so that you have already built a solid structure in one of the two.

just found your channel from your video talking about the shock of learning other languages to your sense of self. the feelings you identified in that video are surprisingly the same I feel being of two cultures (my parent's and my country - 2nd gen immigrant). Moving back to my parent's country at 16 after a racist incident in a country I still see as my home opened up a Pandora's box. I now feel neither British nor Nigerian and, for a long time, I mourned the years I grew up and simply felt British only. But I resolved that by seeing myself as an individual and a world citizen, and by seeing my life in stages of identities :)

Urdu and Hindi are phonetically almost identical (with Urdu having more words from Farsi, Arabic and Turkish while Hindi has more Sanskrit words) but they have different scripts- you probably already knew that, but I’d recommend learning Hindi with the Devanagari script in case you don’t have experience with that. Just a tip. Hindi is different from Urdu. Hindi uses predominantly Sanskrit originated words and if you learn Devanagri *shudh* (pure) Hindi you will get much closer to Sanskrit and our culture. As for the case of Urdu it also originated in India during the Islamic invasion. It's a mix of Hindi+Parsian+Arabic where the predominant source of vocabulary comes from Arabic language. However in modern day to day life Hindi is no longer the same. The influence of Arabic& Parsian words are significant and nowadays English has had a major impact too.

I think it's great you want to improve your Classical Chinese. Cooincidentally I was just thinking of the Classical Chinese poem 千山鸟飞绝,万径人踪灭。孤舟蓑笠翁,独钓寒江雪 that I read years back. I was thinking about how working isolated at home during the pandemic is kind of like that, espcially because I was a little bit cold. I really liked reading the literature of my own language (English) back in school, in addition to studying languages, and I think some of the most successful learners of foreigners languages are people who also excel at their own languages. I haven't really had much time for serious reading, these days, unfortunately.

Yes it was over ambitious! I’m attending school full time so I only accomplished about2/3 of that plan and I’m really behind on Turkish haha. So I revised my plan for Feb. Trying to follow the schedule really got me in depression in Jan😢I felt so unaccomplished at every single moment every day.

Is Classical Chinese completely incomprehensible for a native Chinese, or is it like most old language versions, that one can understand a the meaning of a text and just does not grasp every word? And how are you coping with, what I call the Vorab Exhaustion? So, when you know the grammar of a language and can only really learn vocabulary to improve and thus the progress becomes almost invisible... that is so frustrating D:

Hindi/Urdu should actually be seen as two different languages ; even though both are proto-Sanskrit, the written scripts are completely different. While both are bastardizations of Sanskrit with Punjabi, Farsi and Arabic, Urdu has a written form that is derived from Persian, while Hindi keeps the Devanagiri Sanskrit letters. Urdu borrows it's grammar and structure from Hindi but it is written in the Persian Nastaliq script. It maybe quite difficult to learn written Urdu alongside Hindi. A better way to approach Urdu would be to learn some Hindi and Arabic (or Farsi) first. This would make both the spoken and written forms of the language easier to approach.
