A 15 minute tutorial on how to disable the "beeping" in a UPS power supply. I show how easy it is to rip out the speaker out of a UPS, which enhances the world's stupidest, most annoying product into a working appliance you will be finally be happy with.
More information: It turns out, UPS power makers such as Cyber Power and APC (that provide battery backup power in power outages) are some of the stupidest product designers to walk planet earth, and I don't mean that in a small or insignificant way. Literally nobody, and I mean NOBODY wants to hear a "beep" when the power is out. In customer survey after user survey, the number one requested feature is a "silent UPS power supply" that doesn't annoy the customer with beeps.
Watch this video to learn what every moderately technical person does when they unbox their UPS battery. They remove the speaker. It's easy, it improves battery life, it makes the product FINALLY usable.

THANK YOU!🤝 My Google search to solve this problem led me to you. Bad storms in the Midwest on Wednesday and years of dealing with it + depressing power button to shut-it-up finally took its toll. 😆

Thanks for posting this! Worked great. So funny "constant beeping" is just part of the design for some reason. With no way to disable it because who wouldn't want constant beeping?

Thanks a lot! I managed to locate the speaker (by touching an ear swab on every piece on the board, and when I covered the little hole of that little round thing, the beeps were subdued, so I knew it must be the speaker). Having said that, I did not know how to remove it. Thanks a lot a again.

Power Switch To turn the UPS on, press the power button for approximately 2 seconds - you will hear a constant tone (1 second) - and release after a short beep. To turn the UPS off, press the power button for approximately 2 seconds - you will hear a constant tone (1 second) - and release after two short beeps. Alarm setting: The audible alarm can be turned OFF or ON by quickly pressing the POWER button twice. The default setting is for the Alarm On. To turn the Alarm Off, quickly press the power button twice. You will hear two short beeps when the Alarm is turned Off. To turn the Alarm back ON, quickly press the power button twice. You will hear a single short beep when the Alarm is turned On. *This works also may be easier than manual remover.

A tip from someone who changes out dozens of ups batteries every year... Grab just behind the wide part of the connector, then use a screwdriver handle or piece of wood to 'tap' the plier's jaws. It's quick and lowers the chance of slipping with the pliers and arcing.

Do you know if removing the speaker can cause any issues on the other chain of circuits on the board, since each circuit I assume is expected to receive a certain voltage/amperage of power along the chain in lieu of each circuit using some power and or causing expected planned resistance? Will removing the speaker cause on the other circuits any over voltage/amperage or under voltage/amperage by removing this speaker/curcuit?

@@GMoney-B I worried about it myself, but I've removed the speakers from several different units and never had a single issue. I just wish the manufactures were awake, and had a clue, asked any of their customers, and would offer a design for MORE MONEY without a speaker. Can you imagine how rich they would be? They would be the most popular UPS units on the planet. Nobody wants that speaker, it's literally the most requested feature and the manufacturers hate money and hate their customers.
@GMoney-B
@GMoney-B 3 жыл бұрын
@@brianwski Lol. I agree. How insane is that that they are passing up more customers for actually removing a feature, ha! They could have enough money to take care of what is probably a concern of liability if they take out that game show buzzer. I assume that is probably why. Either that or they support consumer terrorism, lol.

DON'T DO THIS! Most UPS devices today have this option built-in in the Power switch. Just lightly tap it two times and you will hear two beeps for sound off, and one beep for sound on. Lightly tap means not pushing it all the way in like when you are turning it on, but just light tap so it will move just a little. Plus you will keep your warranty. Just read "Troubleshooting" from your instruction manual for users if you have it.

the UPS I got was able to be configured through a usb connector with proprietary software it came with, and I was able to turn off the beeps from the program. I don't know why the manufacturers of these things think we want the beep to be on by default, it should be off by default and it should be a hassle to add the beep but I guess this is mostly marketed at offices, in which the beeps might make some sense (although I think even then it would be better if it was off by default)

Thank you for this video. I have an old APC UPS that I want to just use as a power strip because I don't have another one available, but it insists on beeping for a solid minute every five hours. I could disable it with software, but APC decided that a proprietary RJ48-to-USB plug was the way to go for interfacing with this model. Oh, and you can only disable **some** alarms and only on **SOME** operating systems. Ah well, what's a more universal configuration tool than a pair of pliers, am I right??

There was a time when we needed Speakers on a UPS to tell us the power has failed and to save our work and shut our PC before the UPS backup runs out. Now people have laptops that will tell you when the UPS runs out and people use the UPS only for what its meant until the generator or the Inverter Backup kicks in. APC were the first UPS company that released models that had a button where you could slience them I have it as my main backup. I needed a UPS for my Fiber Cable and broadband connection which in my mom's room Just as a back up connection for me when power fails. But if power fails at night the beeping will wake her up. SO I was looking for a way to remove the speaker as this routers takes hardly any power and a regular UPS will give many hours of back up. I could not in for a router UPS but that is too small and not value for money when you compare it with a regular UPS that will give many times more power back up. I will have to try this. Thanks for the video. BTW The APC UPS is 1500 VA and gives 2 hours backup and is 1 feet Tall and wide. There are two other models of UPS form APC that has a mute switch but one cost twice what a normal 600 VA would cost and the other cost three times. The APC UPS I have costs 5 times more than a regula 600 VA UPS> In lower models APC has not offered this feature if they did I am sure it would sell like hot cakes. It hardly costs anything to put in a mute switch. That gives me an Idea if you looking for some crazy content to go viral. Modify a UPS With a switch. You can drill a hole and maybe stick the switch with glue right there and connect the speaker via this to theboard. I am sure people would love it and this could become a most sought out mod if you offered it as as service.

This normal beep is useless. But special beeps like when the battery is dead, or no charge or voltage issues are very important. UPS makers have to redesign it properly in a less annoying way! And give us a switch to on and off it, and a volume controller 😌

How long has this ups lasted for you? I’m looking for something that will run a 5w usb camera for at least 12 hours for extended power failure.
@brianwski
@brianwski 3 жыл бұрын
This particular unit would last 60 hours or more for a 5w camera (somebody can check my math on that). For a 5W device, the "load you need to support" is about 5W/12V = 0.42 Amps. This unit is 370 Watts, but you give it a "haircut" based on efficiency and maybe the battery getting older over the next year or two, so let's say 350 Watts/12V = 29 Amps before the UPS runs out of Amps. 29 Amps/0.42 Amps = 69. So it will run 69 hours. Always be a little conservative, so I'm going with 60 hours for your USB camera. If you try it out and you get different, let me know!!

The alarm is for those who are using the UPS for a computer and don't use the software that came with it which allow the unit to power down automatically the computer in case of a power loss. So while the alarm is very annoying, it is useful for a lot of person
