NOPE... I have read the detailed article and it is for the first time sort of "formatting the battery". Also not sure if it is applying to LFP battery or just NMC, NCA, etc... But I'm skeptical with this article they mention previous "Slow" charge for the first time was to keep the Lithium in the battery but there was 5-10% Lithium loss... With this rapid/shock formatting the Lithium loss is 30%!!!!!!!! Lithium is a critical component in a battery and you loose instantly 30% and battery is magically better in every way???? I think they sacrificing battery capacity, MAX power output for lifespan...

@@glennmartin6492 I'm not the researcher 😃so not sure... But I would say NO. Because if you think about it battery packs already fully packed. Adding extra 30% materials is lots of weight/space which is not available. Plus I don't think it work like cooking, if food is not salty you just add more 😃These Lithium atoms must be in the correct places. And if there are tons of Lithium where is should not be then it will modify the whole molecule structure, chemistry of the battery. So even charging will work differently, etc...

Yes I have read it. They say the first charge was done very very carefully to keep the Lithium as intact as possible. But even with the slow/carful FIRST charge still lost 5-10% of Lithium. With this "new" Shock charge the loss is 30%.... But they say no impact on Capacity?? Sounds very dubious... I think the Energy density or Max output something has a BIG hit in favors of the Charging Cycles (aka lifespan)...

I don't know if this is relavent but we have two 2022 Tesla model 3 LFP. One is now at 125,000km the other at 50,000km. The one with the high mileage gets charged at superchargers 50% of the time, where the lower mileage one is all level 2 charging at home. At 100% the car with the higher mileage shows 418 km range and the lower km car shows 412 km. When new they were both at 428km at 100%.

@@phazyy I don't see it as a problem, just a point of interest. I didn't mention it but on the low mileage car we wait til it gets to 30% before charging it bak up to 100%. Once a week in the summer and twice a week in the winter. The high mileage car gets much worst treatment, often arriving to super chargers below 3%.

Sounds similar to annealing a light filament to make it last longer before installing. But the problem is the output is less, so I would suspect the cost of doing this is reduced capacity, and hence reduced range. Nothing is for free.

Charging the battery cells in advance would require more caution during the rest of the pack loading process but it would be interesting if the pack could then be used to power some of the manufacturing process of the car. For example robots could tap some power from the car they are working on if they are running low so they don't have to stop working to recharge. It would also allow testing of sub systems to begin very early in the build process. After the build process cars could then be charged faster than normal or maybe still have enough to be ready to ship without delay for charging.

I'm not sure that this is inconsistent with other findings. There is a difference between care of a battery and preparation of a battery to provide best service or best service life. This story relates to the latter and evidently a hard workout at the outset, so to speak, serves to set the battery up for its best future operation. This sort of thing, be it noted, should already be done before anyone takes delivery of an EV. The pre-lithiation of the Anode and the correct formation of the SEI layer still seem like unfinished areas of scientific research. There seems to be always more to come on these topics.

It's kind of counterintuitive because normally heat from over charging or high-current charging promotes dendrite formation in the separator. There must be some protective effect that the high current creates around the electrode. Google smartphones now rapidly charge when the phone is very discharged, but slow down the charge rate as the charge reaches 100%.

I think Ford is already doing this . I saw a video on the manufacture of the Ford lightning. At completion they brought the lighting to a charge station in the plant which was a level 4 charger and charged the lighting with 480 volt 3 phase with 230 amps . It charged from 15 percent to 80 percent in 30 minutes . Not sure if this was the er or sr but I believe it was extended which is 15 minutes shorter than at a standard level 3 charger . So something is occuring at this initial charge . I think this is far higher charge than the lighting will accept so something is going on where Ford allows this high charge by changing it charge parameters just for this first charge . Now that maybe just as a time thing . Faster gets the truck out the door or maybe as Sam suggests in the video . They may not even realize the benefit along with Ford customers of the lightning . It would be interesting to know what they do for the mach e . Can't find any info on the web with Ford charging at the factory

I know you're an EV advocate, but what about Hybrids as a transition step to EVs?
@CiaranMcHale
@CiaranMcHale 6 күн бұрын
I suggest you do an internet search for an article called "Study reveals hybrids could have up to 4.9X lifetime emissions vs BEVs". Also, some space in a hybrid is taken up by an electric motor and (small) battery, which reduces the amount of space left over for an engine and fuel tank. Because of this, it is common for hybrids to have slow acceleration and low top speed (both due to a small engine) and possibly a small fuel tank. Finally, if you do an internet search for "fire risk ev vs ice vs hybrid", you will discover that the risk of fire in a hybrid is about twice that of an ICE car, which is many times the risk of fire in an EV. At the moment, there is no shortage of batteries to make EVs. The push for hybrid vehicles seems to be coming from legacy automakers who have not figured out how to make a compelling, profitable EV and hence are retreating to making hybrids as a stepping stone. However, their retreat into hybrids will not slow down Tesla or Chinese EV makers from continuing to make EVs, and thus there is a risk that companies that choose to focus on hybrids for the next few years may find that by the time they figure out how to make compelling, profitable EVs, the market for EVs will be saturated by Tesla and Chinese EV makers.

70% of the world’s population will experience strong and rapid changes in extreme temperatures and rainfall in the next 20 years if future greenhouse gas emissions are high, new research finds. The proportion drops to 20% in a scenario where emissions are drastically curbed in order to meet global climate goals, the study says. The impacts are likely to be spread across much of the industrialized world, according to the research, which uses large climate model simulations. Deadly floods hit Morocco after A YEAR'S WORTH OF RAIN fell in 2 days. Garyville Louisianans say a major accident at a sprawling Marathon OIL refinery caused health issues. The company insists there were ‘no offsite impacts’, though residents "tasted oil" from the air in their yards. Sharks ARE DESERTING coral reefs, their natural predatory domain, as oceans heat up, a new study shows. CLIMATE CHANGE is transforming the character of the Western United States' hottest periods - making them more FREQUENT, more PERSISTENT, more HUMID and more LETHAL. Greenhouse gas emissions from the burning of fossil fuels CAUSE EXTREME HEATING by fueling higher air temperatures AND by warming ocean water. In 2022, Los Angeles recorded its all-time hottest temperature, 121 degrees, in Woodland Hills. Over the last few years, thermometers in that neighborhood have climbed to 110 degrees and HOTTER OVER two dozen times. Poland's longest river, the Vistula, on Sunday hit a record-low water level in the capital because of CLIMATE CHANGE CAUSED drought, the national weather agency said. Its level at one Warsaw measuring station fell to 3 centimeters (9 inches), beating the last record by a 2 centimeters, according to the IMGW weather institute. It's worse than in 2020, and the water LEVEL IS CONTINUING TO FALL, the institute added on X. Research from TPI Centre highlights differences in corporate decarbonization efforts. Long-term corporate climate goals are commonplace, but ALMOST ALL companies are failing to introduce interim targets OR detailed strategies that set out how they intend to deliver net zero emissions emissions by 2050, a major new report has warned. A report published this morning by the Transition Pathway Institute (TPI) Centre at the London School of Economics and Political Science reveals how the share of emissions-intensive companies with long-term climate targets aligned with recommendations from climate scientists has increased from six per cent to 28 per cent over the last four years. The State of Transition Report 2024 warns that the credibility of firms' emissions reduction efforts is ALMOST NONEXISTENT DUE TO a dearth of intermediate targets that act as MEASURABLE staging posts towards ANNOUNCED longer-term goals.

You make it sound like a 50% increase doubles lifespan, or sometimes even up to 70%.. for what, more than double? how can one be talking about tech, but getting percentages this wrong.

If Tesla batteries are being reused for powerwalls. Why are they so disgusting expensive?

Search for Dala's EV Repair and his awesome work and open source to use old high voltage battery as powerwall. Without opening it just plug it in to your solar system.

Math failure. In order to last twice as long, the lifespan needs to be increased by 100%. Still any improvement through a small extra step is more than well worth it.

Ignoring the bad math. Had a customer bring in his 1972 merc with 2,400,000 on the clock/books, original engine, still lovely to drive... Also only costs about 10-15k to do all new brakes and suspension plus replace some worn out carpets and drivers seat making it really not worth throwing away if the battery is still good. Used to often do reco engine, new brakes tyres and suspension on cars and vans for people for under $20k giving them their vehicle back almost like new rather than them gambling on used lemon that needs that done soon anyway. Honestly should be more argument to keep EVs than ICE in that way since they're so simple to maintain 🤷‍♂️
