/ loisdavidsonart www.etsy.com/uk/shop/OwlsAndF... Here's a quick sketchbook tour of some of my sketches from 2021 before I start painting and sketching in earnest for 2022, there's plenty of exciting free content coming up for you here at KZbin soon, as well as exclusive tutorials for Patreon.
My sketchbooks of choice are currently 2 Etchr A4 100% cotton watercolour sketchbooks, 1 with cold pressed paper, the other with hot pressed paper, and for collating larger or loose sketches, I like a WH Smiths A3 display book as shown in the video.
Thanks for watching, let me know in the comments below what you think about sketching, and what sort of sketchbook you prefer, and happy sketching and painting!

It's so true that sketching improves how you see things. It's one thing I request of anyone who wants me to teach them - you really do need a little sketchbook. Thanks for this really encouraging video. I love your loose style of sketching. Very effective in suggesting great compositions. Love the thumbnail sketches

I had one of my first plein air experiences yesterday, and it was incredibly useful. I was waiting to pick up my son at school, and I drew and painting a small tree. I was truly enlightened by how well, how realistic the sketch turned out in comparison to using a reference photo in studio. Very helpful and it was completed in 15 minutes.

Thanks so much for sharing your sketches, Lois. I have always thougth that sometimes artists loosen up in the 'privacy' of their sketchbooks and I love to see how they are experimenting. Love your website and find your tutorials very inspiring.

Really enjoyed the video as I’m just getting into watercolour painting. It was also nice to see sketches of Cuckmere as I’m originally from nearby at Eastbourne (although I live in Colchester now)and miss the Sussex countryside/landscape.

Hi Lois, this is invaluable for artists, it took me a long time to enjoy working in sketch books. I love your thoughts on sketching as a means to progressing your work. My cousin who was Glasgow school of art trained made me go out with her and sit at different places to sketch, something l was lazy to do, also a bit self conscious. I took it up again 2020 during my lockdown walks, it helped me a lot to take my mind off things. Thank you as always for your lovely videos Alioban xx

I so enjoyed this tour Lois, there’s a certain kind of intimacy in sharing one’s sketchbook. Something i don’t have the courage to do yet. My favourite….? The monochrome bird watcher. I wish I could develop that same spontaneity 🙏🎨🙏

Thank you for this, I'm so glad that you have made a point of this.....as well as all the benefits to painting I just love to sketch and often think I perhaps like doing it more than the actual painting !

I'm new to watercolour and am a better sketcher than a painter. I've recently been drawn again to pencil sketching. Pen and wash is a way to combine both where the watercolour can complement the sketching that I'm better at. Thanks for inspiring me. I love your watercolour using granulated mediums in minimal landscape. I discovered I need to upgrade to cotton paper and higher quality paints. My paints are just a student grade quality. I'm getting frustrated. Happy New Year!

I use Cotman student quality paints and cheap brushes, but I would never scrimp on paper, in my opinion, a good cotton paper is the most important thing, then any paint and brushes will work their magic with practice and experimentation

Hi Lois, thank you for the inspiration you provide in your videos. You mentioned that you were looking to do more line and wash. Im sure youve come across Peter Sheeler. If not I recommend you look him up. I find his line work incredible, it seems to enhance and never be over fussy or detract. He does work on a small scale A5 mainly I think.

When does a sketch become a drawing or painting in its own right? I kept sketchbooks for years but found I was getting increasingly precious about the finish of each page and the “Art of The Sketchbook”. The crossover to journaling was too tempting. I also found it was becoming an excuse not to get down to actual painting! Now I mainly paint and my resolution this year is to try and find the right balance. Love your “sketches” by the way and your use of different media :-)
