/ loisdavidsonart www.etsy.com/u... I had a very interesting question in the comments of my Sketchbook Tour video, so here I try to give my thoughts on the difference between a sketch and a finished painting, while sketching a Pollarded willow tree on a riverbank.
Thanks for watching, let me know in the comments below what you think about sketching, and what sort of sketchbook you prefer, and happy sketching and painting!

I loved watching your sketch. And wow, I never thought of negative sketching. It really made the branches pop out. Thank you so much, Lois!

Really good info. And also, pollarded willows are usually on banks of small creeks between fields. They are acting as a wind breaker and they are trimmed to promote root structure. That helps to stabilize the banks and therefore helps maintaining the drainage for the fields and pastures

I have always asked this question. My idea is that a sketch is a sketchy drawing.....A drawing is a "completed work" like a painting, with some detail, light and shade/shadows, and it is my favourite form of art. Your drawing a the Pollarded Willow is just gorgeous, I love it.

I like your explanation of what a sketch is and it fits well with my ideas. I have always thought the main difference between a sketch and a drawing or finished piece is intent. There may be a dozen reasons why I sketch something, but I don't have the intent to frame it or "finish it". However, when doing a drawing or painting I have every intention of framing it and hanging in up or selling it or giving it away. It may fail imo but it is still a finished piece if it goes in the trash bin or not :-) If I later decide to frame a sketch for any reason it magically becomes a drawing or painting :-) I think the definition varies by the individual.

Thanks for this, Lois. I’m always happier with a pencil in my hand than a paintbrush for some reason. Maybe it’s because I have more control. You used a negative painting technique on the trunk, I see. That really worked well to create depth. It’s inspired me to have a go!

Fantastic sketch such great detail. I am hoping you can go on and explain how to convert this to the painting. I recently attempted to do a landscape. Had most of the colors right. The sky and horizon were good. However the definition of the subject sort of melted in the paint. So I started again with a simple pencil sketch. However I don’t know how to go about applying color. Should I ink first? Perhaps throw it to the wind and add color? Confused in Alabama

They are generally called crack willows because they grow and when they no longer want a branch you hear a 'C-R-A-C-K' and the branch falls off. This is not the same as goat, white or weeping willows. They are one of these easiest of trees to grow from a twig. I used to watch Ian King on TV many years ago (what's happened to him?) and he described a sketch as an original idea or drawing and when you produce something that is an improvement on the original, the original becomes a sketch. Similarly, if you paint the same scene yet again, the second one becomes a sketch unless this new one is radically different, i.e. a winter version of a summer sketch. See if others agree with that.
