----------------------------------
After riding the new 2021 Specialized Rockhopper Sport 29 around for a couple of months now, I've had a chance to gather my thoughts on the build quality and the ride quality. Come on in and see what I like about the Rockhopper and some areas I think could be improved.
The Specialized Rockhopper has been a staple in the Specialized lineup for over 30 years. The 2021 Rockhopper has come along way since its debut in the mid 1980's and has positioned itself as a fantastic entry-level mountain hardtail mountain bike. It comes in 5 levels ranging in price from $500 to $1100 US, and the model reviewed in this video is the Rockhopper Sport 29 in size Small, in the Satin Forest Green / Oasis color.
Support the channel and pick up some stickers (and Future Shock spacers if you need them).
Thanks!!

I am new to mountain biking and I have been wanting to do it for a while. I looked at so many bikes online and did a little research into what bike would be good to start with. I did not want to go too cheap and stop at Walmart because I know quality when I see it. This bike I feel is a perfect entry level bike for me and I hear Specialized is a great brand. I do not regret buying this bike! I shredded a moderate local trail today and it was amazing. No chain drops whatsoever and I was impressed with the durability and comfortablity of the ride.. I can only imagine what a 5 to 10,000 dollar bike could do. But this bike was great for 599.00. Thank you for putting up this video.

Oddly, after a certain point the amount you spend on the bike gets you very limited return on investment. You've made a solid choice and I hope you enjoy MTB as a lifelong hobby! #ShredModerateTrails - I like it!

That's something you can say from many things in life. I ride an Epic hardtail for the past 4 years and I am in love with it. A two suspension setup would have tripled the buying price and who knows what the maintenance costs with very little returns, or even worse, higher weight, which is one of the things I like most of the Epic, its lightness.

About 10 years ago I had a Rockhopper it was by far the best bike I ever owned. It got me through some of school and and a large part of my early working years I rode the bike who knows how many miles. I had acquired the bike for free from a friend who had gotten something else. Honestly wish I knew what I had then I’d of never gotten rid of it even as I grew out of it.

Yep me to, absolutely hammering at breakneck speed down advanced, rocky and knarly trails. Hitting big 15 feet gaps to and landing gently. Hitting high 8 feet vertical jumps to. Hitting dangerous steeps, 3 foot step downs, big step up's. Drop jump's, fast burns also. I've only been mountain biking two months. The guys up the advanced trails I'm hitting three times a week, also work in the local MTB shop said to me below "Alex you've gone balls to the wall at advanced level from begginer level at age 49 in just two months, you know you shouldn't be riding a bike like the specialized rockhopper at that level down the rough, advanced trails, and doing those big jumps to. You need a more expensive full suspension bike at at least £3000 pounds to do that or you'll wreck the bike." Technically speaking their right, but I can't afford that, so I have to work to my budget, I paid £446 pounds brand new for my 2021 rockhopper. I think those advanced mountain bikers didn't like it cos I learned to do at breakneck speed with the correct techniques on a cheap bike, what took them 18 months to learn to do on more £4000 pounds full suspension expensive bikes. Also because I'm 25 year's older than them to pissed them off. Moreover, they sold me the rockhopper 2021 and told me the bike could do advanced trails and big jumps to. Thank you for your encouraging comment. I know I'm doing what's correct after reading your inspired words, I just learn things very quickly cos of my ADHD. Daredevil to with many crashes lol. Bless you.

Thanks for the informative video. Would you recommend this over the Giant Talon 2?
@TheBikeSauce
@TheBikeSauce 3 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. They are very similarly spec’d. With the Giant, you’re getting a 1x drivetrain, but it’s MicroSHIFT, not shimano. Not a bad thing. The fork does have a lockout, but will probably ride similar to the Specialized. Biggest functional difference will be the 1x vs 2x drivetrain.

I have a question when it goes over a rocky section how do I make it a little more comfortable do I make the front shocks more stiff or more compress able so it’s not so rough over these types of sections?
@TheBikeSauce
@TheBikeSauce 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the type of shock. If it’s like the one on the stock rockhopper sport, then it’s a cool spring and there’s not much adjustment available other than stiffening it up a bit if it feels too pogo-y. If it’s an air shock with rebound damping, then setup the air according to your weight then adjust the rebound so it’s just slow enough not to feel like it’s bouncing you off bumps

@TheBikeSauce 3 жыл бұрын
Great choice! It's a solid entry to mid level bike depending on the model you choose. As for availability, it's a problem we've all been facing since the start of the pandemic. The global bike shortage is real, and most of the local shops can't seem to keep any new bikes stocked. I've managed to source 2 new bikes over the course of the COVID era by pure persistence. Checking the websites daily (multiple times, since I tend to obsess over these things) and calling all local shops regularly to check on stock. For some perspective, many viewers on this channel have already placed bike orders weeks or months ago, and are still waiting for orders to come in, which could be as late as early 2021. On the upside, I do predict that pretty soon we will start seeing a lot of barely ridden used bikes being sold by people who tried out cycling during COVID and decided it wasn't for them. So perhaps keep tabs on your local craigslist or offer up. Ebay as well. Thanks for watching!

Would you say this bike is better then the trek Marlin 5? I'm trying to decide between these 2
@TheBikeSauce
@TheBikeSauce 2 жыл бұрын
Very comparable. Looks like marlin 5 is specing a 3x7 system which is very outdated. It also could mean that the rear hub is using a freewheel (but not certain). This would make upgrading the drivetrain much more challenging than in a hg cassette rear hub. A great entry level bike either way

You pointed out several details that I missed in researching this bike. This bike would be perfect for my wife if it came with wheels that are tubeless ready. Do you know of anything similar that would be tubeless ready?
@TheBikeSauce
@TheBikeSauce 3 жыл бұрын
The Rockhopper spec's tubeless ready rims/tires starting at the $1000 Elite model. Unfortunately, most bikes at the Sport level are not tubeless ready. For instance, Trek Marlin and Giant Talon come tubed in their stock form. Perhaps not a deal breaker, as you can always upgrade to tubeless later.

How do you think the Fuji Nevada 29 1.9 measures to this?
@TheBikeSauce
@TheBikeSauce 3 жыл бұрын
The Fuji 1.9 will be more of a recreational bike. Mechanical disc, 3x drivetrain, etc.. I'd say the RH sport is a bit of a step up from the Fuji 1.9, but both are great entry points into MTB.

Hello sir I recently bought the same exact bike and I want to change couple stuf my front fork to roxshock which stuff I have to look for to order the shock I have no clue and do you have any per referable hydraulic brake plus disk my breaks are mechanical very bad any suggestion brand??
@TheBikeSauce
@TheBikeSauce 3 жыл бұрын
A fork upgrade would be really nice. Try to stick to roughly the same amount of travel so you don’t affect the geometry too much. This bike has 80, 90, or 100mm of travel depending on the frame size you get. You’ll need a fork for a standard 1-1/8” threadless headset and a quick release axle. Other than that, just about any fork will fit. On the topic of brakes, this model does come with hydraulic brakes. They do take some time to bed in (longer than others), but if you want to more power, Shimano Deore and SRAM Level or guide level of brakes are affordable and a decent upgrade you could try.

Fuji comes in 4 different levels I think. Both are good entry points into mtb. If you plan to get into the sport, you might consider upgradability, as some models will more easily accept modern upgrades than others. Regarding sizing, likely size Lg, which equates to a frame size of about 19-21.” Don’t think weight is a concern either

how does this bike compare to the Scott Aspect 940?
@TheBikeSauce
@TheBikeSauce 2 жыл бұрын
The Scott is better spec'd. Fork has adjustable rebound and a lockout. Also comes standard with hollowtech II bottom bracket (not square taper). Those are the 2 main differentiators. You're paying a premium for the Specialized brand and they certainly know it (and can therefore spec lower for the same price).
