I just took delivery of my loaded pure red 2021 Crosstrek Limited on Monday and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I think that the 2020 Crosstrek that I previously test drove was dangerously slow but the 2021 has enough power to pass, merge, and basically get out of its own way. It still isn't fast, but has enough power to be safe in traffic. Subaru seems to think that smaller means cheaper but some of us buyers like nice cars but not big cars. The Crosstrek is higher quality and has more premium execution than all the non-luxury priced cars except Mazda. I cross-shopped it against Mercedes, BMW, Volvo, Lexus, and Mini. Until now they all had much more power but the new engine closes the gap substantially. The Crosstrek has better suspension, better AWD, and much easier to use tech than any of the luxury brands for $15k to $20K less. As you suggest I would have paid more for a Touring trim level with more features. (BTW, I hate power lift gates because I don't have all day to wait for them to open.) Keep up the informative and critical reviews!

I’m a bus driver, but Subaru gives me peace of mind. The more manual features it has, the more I liked it. A no nonsense car for no nonsense drivers. Have a 2019, 6-speed manual in the same blue/grey colour.

Great, unbiased and honest review -- really refreshing, as although Subaru finally got the engine right with the Crosstrek, they missed on some other areas to really get this car at the level it needs to be. So much to like about the Crosstrek, but like you said, at $32.5K, it is not a big ask for a vent and USB for the rear passengers. I'm okay with not having an electric liftgate, as that motor for the rear lift gate would be an expensive fix, I imagine, when it wears out, but I can see if that is an issue for others. Thank you for bringing this to us, and it was just the right amount of thorough and the perfect length for a non-road test review. Despite a few omissions, I think then 2.5 Crosstreks will fly off the lot for Subaru.

Those things you call for are for people who buy different cars. People with Crosstreks don't haul around people in the backseat because the space is too small. So as a kidless person, I'm glad I'm not paying extra for rear vents, climate, and usb (which you can wire from center console anyway). Rear lift open? Why? That is a feature for suburban mothers who are constantly getting groceries loaded with no free arms and with kids running around. Crosstrek is too small for these folks and for me I don't use it as a grocery vehicle and if I did I can easily open the trunk. You are trying to get them to make me buy features I don't need. Your response is that I could get a lower trim, which would be true except that I need those LED highlights (other trims only offer halogen which is terrible on this model and I get stressed at night when I can't see well enough so...I had to get a Limited). In any case, the features you mention might be nice for the kind of people who buy Foresters or Outbacks but those would do nothing for the Crosstrek demographic. Subaru understands the Crosstrek demographic's needs which is why this is the best selling subcompact SUV. If they add bells and whistles we don't care about they will price themselves out of their leading position. Anyone who wants that stuff will want a larger car so don't put it on the Crosstrek.
@BachmanAutoGroupLouisville
@BachmanAutoGroupLouisville 3 жыл бұрын
I can definitely see where you are coming from. All I ever think they should do is give people the option, that’s why I suggested the idea of a “Touring” trim Xtrek.... something that allows for someone who wants the size to have the premium features, but keep the lower trims for people like yourself that don’t need them. Thanks for checking out the video, Jeffrey!

I own a 2011 legacy and a 2017 outback and im probably not going to subaru in the future. I love my 3.6 engine in the legacy and the outback is super great for family trips. Im not a fan of stop start as well as the giant tablet in the new legacy and outback. It drives me nuts almost all of the hvac buttons are burried in a screen. Take a look at BMW and Kia, they are doing infotainment the mlst practical way. All of the major models had huge recalls in the last few years. Structure(ascent), valves(forester, wrx, brz), fuel pump(outback legacy) These are major issues that subaru has had ever since their success has started about 10 years ago. I love my current subarus and plan on keeping them forever but i think subaru needs to work on their quality control before i go back to them. I mean i think i still have 5-10 years before my legacy dies so we have time. As of right now Kia, hyundai and mazda are my next future car. I will say this, please make startex optional in limited models. I am use to getting limited and touring trims due to the sunroof, harmon sound system, and the better safety features but the startex seats are super comfy and water resistant.

Thanks for posting all these great informational videos. Is it true, when some say that the 2021 Limited does in fact have "rear USBs," that they’re insinuating that rear passengers will use the two USBs in the rear of the center console, under the armrest, and just run the cables to the back seat? Curious on that.
@BachmanAutoGroupLouisville
@BachmanAutoGroupLouisville 3 жыл бұрын
It is a weird situation, because on the Subaru website it says rear USBs. But I’ve looked at/sat in/driven 100+ Crosstreks and never once seen a rear USB port. I think it would be awful generous for Subaru to consider the center console USBs as “rear ports” but maybe they are 🤷🏻‍♂️

Nice review. I disagree with your suggestion for a higher price. Prices are too high. All trim levels should have LED lights & a rear seat arm rest with cup holders like the Limited. The Limited should have two X-Mode settings like the Sport. That Cool-Gray Khaki is a great color. Crosstrek should request an Amber Alert for that 2.4L turbo engine.

Superb review ,best I have seen on any video.we were more than likely to purchase the 2021 limited.I have been researching Mazda Cx30,Hyundai Kona,and the crosstrek and was going for it however your video got me thinking about things Subaru could have done for more appeal such as power lift gate ,etc.. For me the big thing is the tailgate power as the Mazda has incorporated..The loaded limited is expensive enough for a power lift gate.

Halogens actually generate heat which can alleviate the issue of glazing in freezing precip. Common occurrence here in the North. They are much cheaper to replace as well. This can payoff bigtime if you plan on having the vehicle longterm. Once it is out of warranty if the LEDs need replaced or if the steering responsive headlight module goes bad it can be quite expensive to replace. Price OEM replacements. Halogen bulbs are massively cheaper. If you need brighter, whiter light there are many aftermarket bulb options available.

This not an STI, but its still a hell of a lot of fun for someone whe has a commute with kids as well.

I wonder why Subaru didn't put in the new CB18 turbocharged 1.8-liter boxer engine in the Crosstrek Limited/Sport models instead of the FB25D from the Outback. It only has 177 bhp but the much higher torque peak of 221 lb-ft (300 Newton-meters) makes better use of the AWD system, and unlike the FB25D the engine won't significantly lose power at higher altitudes.

The front facing camera is available in Canada. Canada gets many things by added by various manufacturers we don't get in the states. Big example Kia Seltos which is a Crosstrek competitor. Seltos in Canada gets heated and cooled seats, heated steering wheel, front and rear parking sensors . None of which is available on the US model. Go figure why cooled seats are available in cooler Canada, but in HOT Kansas no such luck. Subaru, Kia, Hyundai, Mazda all offer better upgrades in Canada the the US.

So, you work for a dealer, and own a 2019 yet you have no clue that the rear vents are under the front seats? Subaru has been doing this since the 80s lol. Well done. Power outlets for the rear are in the armrest console. Hence the halfmoon cutout to run charging cables. Subaru does this because they are less prone to getting gunked up with crud and less likely to be kicked while something is plugged into them by children both of which can cause a malfunction. In a driving rain a power liftgate is the last thing I want as they are horrendously slow. Also one less thing to go wrong down the road once the vehicle warranty is up. I often laugh at folks who cry about stuff like this. Same with power seats. If you are the primary driver once you get the seat to where you want it how often do you move it? Also, as with power liftgates they are slow and less to go wrong long term with manuals. Lastly, halogens produce heat which can alleviate the glazing to the headlights that can happen in freezing precip(rain/sleet.) Also the bulbs are A LOT cheaper to replace out if pocket once the vehicle warranty is up. Also, if the steering responsive module goes bad out of warranty it is quite pricey to replace. Price the oem replacements for yourself. If you want brighter, whiter, retina seering light there are more than enough bulbs on the aftermarket that can handle that. I often laugh at wants vs needs.

Mazda CX 30 has many of the things you wanted on the Crosstrek, and a fully loaded Premium CX 30 is more than a $1000 less. If Mazda can do those extras so can Subaru. Stop giving away all the millions to charity and put it in the cars.

Here is why I refuse to go Subaru until they go to an inline 4. As a person who does, DIY stuff and all the maintenance at home instead of the stealership, subaru's boxer engine design is terrible. To change out basic 4 spark plugs you had to remove the battery and the intakes. Like who in the world designed the engine where doing simple things like a spark plug changes requires you to take apart certain parts of the motor???? This is one reason we went Toyota instead of subaru. Changing out the spark plugs on a line 4 like the Toyota takes less then 15 minutes.

Sorry, I maybe a bit too directed. My only problem with this crosstrek is the trunk space, if you looking under the vehicle, they put the exhaust under spare tire, and their is lot of unused space on both sides of it, if you looking at Impreza sedan, the exhaust is on the side and the trunk floor is really low compact to wagon( well, crosstrek one), I’m kinda curious and like to check out some new places along my trip and I like to have autosock or chains, pump, traction device... for incase I got stuck, those are small stuff and I like to keep it in car incase I need. It well be nice if they redesign trunk floor with some space.

That power upgrade is not really a big deal whatsoever! I own 2019 Forester and the 2.5 L engine is just enough to do normal driving but its still struggles going up steep hill! What they should have done is make the brake light into a full C stretched shape led. Front design refresh is hideous!!
@BachmanAutoGroupLouisville
@BachmanAutoGroupLouisville 3 жыл бұрын
To be fair the Crosstrek is lighter than the Forester therefore the 2.5L will have a more significant impact on the feel of the drive
@delkor007
@delkor007 3 жыл бұрын
Bachman Auto Group 2.5 L engine still a weak engine! Subaru has awd system which means there is a power loss in the drivetrain which is about 17-25 % loss from the crank so power to the wheels is only about 130 or less to a 3000 lbs car it needs more power! On the Forester 2.5 engine it goes 0-60 9.6 seconds thats very slow! Crosstrek weighs about 3100 lbs and 182 hp is not much better!
@chrisa2223
@chrisa2223 3 жыл бұрын
Sunbum Kim I disagree-it makes a lot of difference-you noted yourself the 2.5 is just adequate. Now imagine 30+ LESS horsepower to move that AWD weight around. 20% more power does wonders-takes it from dangerously slow to adequate. It should be the standard engine. Subaru should also allow the 6MT in the “sport”.
