The DCT is a great idea, I lost my left leg in a bike accident and test rode a crosstourer DCT it was fantastic. Bikes being available like this means I can buy one and just ride.

Had one of these for a bit and loved it - DCT, self-cancelling indicators, massive panniers, electronic suspension. It was more like a car than a bike!

Good review. That was nice you took it a little bit off road, you could definitely see the suspension was doing a good job at adjusting for the terrain. I’d definitely consider the DCT option with finger gear selector rather than the foot peg gear selector. I don’t know if this is an option but where the clutch would traditionally be I’d like to have a back brake lever. Of course some people will say that’s going to be dangerous because in a hurry you’re going to pull in what you’ve been conditioned to think is your clutch. Yeah I get that but in a hurry I’m usually trying to stop anyway. Looking forward to your next video. Keep up the good work👏

DCT for me was a real big surprise... I mean ultimately if we have a up down QS which we all appreciate these days it isn't a million miles away from this. Thanks for the comments Dukie!

Honda have developed the DCT into a superb transmission, Well worth spending time with for anyone unsure if it would be suitable for them 👍

Great review. I have a 2020 ATAS is this spec with additional luggage, crash bars and spot lights. It also the optional (and expensive) foot change which really is the best of both worlds. I prefer this to the paddles which I also have. Like you, it suits my riding in changing up when I would (and did). If you ride it faster it has (I believe) a learning function which means it hangs on to the gears a little longer. It’s frugal too other than at low speeds where I was surprised to see that it’s more economical at 50mph than 20mph. Significantly so. My 2014 GSA was better at lower speeds. I have to assume that, bizarrely, Euro5 has had a part to play and may be to do with keeping the cat hot. Either way it’s madness. At motorway speeds I’ve had over 70mpg consistently yet slow, steady town riding knocks this down. The suspension is ok but I find the odd bump seems to catch it out even on the softest setting where I would have expected plusher damping. The springs are too soft which makes the bike wallow and with any load slows the steering. That’s where the electronic suspension allows remote rear preload adjustment. It makes a big difference from my experience. I have the original taller screen and fitted a Pyramid wind deflector to the tank to help the noise and buffeting from the screen. Worth every penny. One major omission is tyre pressure monitoring. With all the fancy tech (and safety warning when you switch on) why not tyre pressure monitoring? A nice bike but only for the DCT option sadly a Honda exclusive.

Would you offer an opinion Vs. the BMW GS1250? Do you see a value in shaft Vs. chain drive? Boxer powertrain Vs. DCT? I was at a shop yesterday and actually got to sit on the African… to be honest, the Honda brand appeals to me more so than the BMW nameplate (service reliability). Thanks!

Having a clutch lever that's there to feather in first or grab in the event of a whiskey throttle would be good. I can't agree with you that it's an ideal first big bike. I find mine too tall & too heavy, which would be fine but there's no clutch lever to moderate that power if you over-cook it. In my case, the first time I moved off on it, it went a little faster than I was used to, coming from a 1997 CB500, so muscle memory made me grab for the clutch, and then panic mode set in & I grabbed the front brake. The forks on the CRF1100L dive quite a lot, and the brakes are considerably stronger than a CB500's 2 pot single disk Nisin front, and combined with it being an inch or two too tall to flat foot with a 32" inseam, it went over. I would say first get used to an Africa Twin, then get used to a DCT, or first get used to a DCT then get used to an AT - there are NC750s with the DCT box. Heck, the Rebel 1100 would possibly be better as it can be flat-footed by a dwarf, has the same engine & DCT box. It's too much to throw at a newbie at once, and after 15 years away from biking I am that newbie. Now I'm reduced to doing throttle control exercises on the drive when my neighbours aren't taking their cars apart on the drive (garages in a row, common drive), finding the biting point & starting off, till I get used to the DCT.

Besides the crappy DCT transmission it's a very good bike. Under more severe off-road conditions DCT is, by my opinion, totally useless. Besides that under these conditions the bike is too heavy just like the even more overweight BMW GS but most of us dont even consider to take these bikes off-road. I drive a manual 2016 for over 65.000 miles under all conditions without any problems.

I agree with the poster above, the DCT off road is fantastic, can't stall it and you can even bunny hop it over logs when you understand how it works. You need to learn throttle control rather than clutch control. Trail braking is the key.
