This Yamaha YZF1000R Thunderace rebuild has taken the best part of a year to complete. Through all the pain and heart break, all the sets back. We eventually completed the rebuild!. And in this upload we finally get to take the bike out on the open road!. But first it needs to pass the MOT test....

You need to put teflon tape on the threads of your compressor fittings.
@UKTomsk
@UKTomsk 28 күн бұрын
When using ptfe tape make sure you put it on the same way on the thread front to back anticlockwise or when you tighten down on it, it will unravel. Good Luck.

I was recently told that you roll it like spaghetti then feed it into the valley of the thread. I had always wrapped it round like paper.

Great work on the restoration. Regarding the rust in the tank, I did the following: Filled the tank with Apple Cider vinegar and left it 24 hours Drained it out, then rinsed with water, to loosen the rust. Drained the water out then sprayed lots of WD40 in the tank. Drain this, then fill with fuel and put an inline fuel filter. Change the filter after 2 months and I never had an issue.

Oxalic acid is by far the best for rust . I tried apple cider, sulphuric, hydrochloric, commercial products and a host of other products and so called remedies. Definitely oxalic acid looked like a new tank inside, shiny metal.

Well done Rye. Only use E5 or less in the bike. E10 will screw it up. It’s hydroscopic due to the ethanol. It will degrade the rubber in the carbs/lines etc, and make things rust!
@WoBlink1961
@WoBlink1961 25 күн бұрын
Absolutely.... anything after 2002 can use E10 etc without concern (though it degrades quickly, so maybe not in anything that will be laid up for more than a few months); 1992 - 2002 "some" can use E10, anything prior to that you should definitely stick to E5 or less (PS the word is actually 'hygroscopic'...... another couple of words are 'pedantic' and 'bastard', which can always be applied to me! :D)

The Thunderace was the 1st big bike I ever rode , after having an NSR 125 RR , the Ace belonged to a work mate who had purchased it new , he'd only had it a month after getting back into biking , he let me have a go and I absolutely loved it , fantastic machine , it was the same silver and red , great memories 👍🏻

I had both bikes. The first year of the R1 saw their gearboxes breaking a shaft from memory and by the 2nd year they had it sorted and a new paint livery that was awesome. I bought mine within 24 hours of seeing it. The difference was huge. Your bike is way more rideable and they have excellent handling, The R1 was a real handful. It was a race bike and required 100% concentration. I had an exhaust fitted and the carbs rejetted to suit and it had 145hp on the dyno.

The YZF1000 Thunderace was a mild upgrade but visual restyle of the previous FZR1000 Exup RU which I had for 4 years. Same 5V motor same power. Has a test ride on the Thunderace and felt the same. Good bikes serious power at that time and good handling and stability no need for a steering damper. Things moved on at a track day at Knockhill Circuit, Scotland got a 10 lap session on a Honda CBR 900 Fireblade. Felt less power but much lighter and more agile but matched my best times. Well done with the Thunderace rebuild enjoyed your video

I've been riding since the late 80's and had an immaculate '96 Thunderace for the last 5yrs that's still only got 13000 on the clock. LED lights all round including angel eye headlights, black screen and scorpion exhaust but pretty much standard apart from that. Arthritic back forces sale and that's it pictured... I've owned an 'Ace since new in 1999 when I was in my 20s (it's now relegated to old man semi-retired status as I replaced it with an MT10.) A bit of history... Yamaha's flagship sports bike in the mid 90s was the ageing FZR1000 EXUP. The Honda Fireblade changed the game for litre class sports bikes (smaller size and lower weight) and whilst Yamaha was developing the YZF-R1, as a stop gap, they updated the FZR with the sportier swingarm from the YZF-750, went to semi-ecu controlled ignition with EXUP value (speed, load/gear and rpm sensor based), uprated the suspension, gave it a new "posh frock" fairing and styling and called it the YZF1000R Thunderace. It was their halo model sports bike at the time (for 2 years) to try and compete with the Fireblade and Kwaka ZX9R (which IMO it did well and was a litle bit better than both). The R1 changed the game again, and the rest is history... It got reclassified at this point as a Sports Tourer, which it did fairly well as for a few years. I did about 54k on mine, doing track days (both in the UK and at the Nurburgring), rode the TT course and did 40 or 50 euro trips to the Alps/Black Forrest and places like that. It's still a great bike, if a little dated.. ;) (and the riding position isn't very good to small, older men, which I have now become (MT10 is a worthy replacement for old men who are still hooligans at heart... :D )... ;) )

I bought exactly the same bike in 1998. Italian model as well, as a parallel import as they were known back then. At its first MOT, the testing station stuck a beam deflector on the headlamp for me! Kept it until 2018. It was Yamaha's stop gap bike between the FZR1000 and the R1. In fact I think the first R1's had the same engine? Might be wrong on that one. Still, it was and still is today an awesome bike.

You should definitely fix tank rust issues. As it'll slowly but surely destroy the fuel pump and other parts. I was putting this job off on my GSXR for a couple of years and the end result was a failed fuel pump which cost a fortune new from Suzuki. None of the aftermarket solutions worked, they all failed to deliver enough fuel. I used a Por15 kit to seal the tank. It worked magic. My tank looks new basically. I also got it painted on the outside by a professional but only after I finished sealing it. Got a new factory fuel pump unit. And now all the power is back😊

As for the airline PTFE tape will cure the leaks.
