I test rode a 2018 model last summer and was impressed with how light it felt compared to the GoldWing. That motor really sets it apart ---

I’m always surprised at the valve check expense requirements on these bikes. Yes, it’s nice to know information before you buy, but it’s hard to believe folks shopping in this price category will have maintenance expense be a huge factor. First valve check doesn’t come until 14k, IIRC, and you CAN learn to do it yourself with proper tools, as I did on my K1200S. While you have it apart, you can easily do other things like change plugs (if needed) and flush coolant.

Nice overview. I was able to test ride both the R 18 B and K 1600 B on the same day. What a smooth engine that K 1600 has. I thoroughly enjoyed them both in different ways. @Texas2Tires

Almost $38,000 in Canada with a set of handlebars from a bike worth $10,000 it just looks dumb when sat on it compared to the K1600GT version.

The peg position has the knees bent quite a lot for a touring bike. Might be a challenge doing a long haul if your over 6ft. (Yes I am aware it has Highway boards)

I've heard that BMW's are very expensive to maintain. Not sure, but is this true. Because the Honda Goldwing is not, so I think that should also be mentioned when doing comparing it to anything else. Your thoughts, , ,

The bags still just look like an after thought, I was hoping BMW would've did a better job at the integration of the bags on the bagger! But the price doesn't seem all to bad compared to the competition, naturally I read the comment with the high service cost, but then I guess it's like owning a H-D....

I'm in this same boat. I know the k1600b has more to offer for the money than the rocket 3, but the rocket 3 seems like it's more reliable and fun. Basically, the k1600b is the logical choice, but the rocket 3 is the emotional choice for me lol.

Top speed? Or more to the point is it governed and if so at what speed? I would be bummed if I bought one and it was governed at 120. With that motor I need to open it up and roll at 140-150 if I should so happens to be on a deserted road, on a Sunday morning, in July, at dawn.

Because they wanted it to be more of a cruiser, they put round bars on it so that all the cruiser bolt-on accessories would fit. The GT and GTL have sport bars. But if you like your FJR riding position, you wouldn’t like the B most likely, anyway.

@@AdamWaheed Some context: having owned an ST1300 (lovely 'open road' long distance tourer), this bmw is similar in size and I've come to the conclusion that I'd prefer to ride long distances on something with 2 wheels that doesn't have a curb weight of some 750 lbs in order to carry some luggage. For me, 'light is right'...and these bulky/heavy/thirsty bikes are simply too specialised to enjoy on any road other than 'vast open spaces' where these bikes thrive in this niche.
