No CarPlay/Android Auto, speed limited, wonky stability.. holy cow..... I test road the GT and loved it, but the rider is trapped in the riders triangle. I need to be able to move my knees around. I was hoping the Grand America with floorboards would be the ticket... but with the stability... no way. I'll continue to look for aftermarket solutions before being the GT, but I don't like having my legs splayed out at a huge angle so now I'm a little bummed such a cool bike won't fit my needs.

Please try Goldwing. The experience will be even better. It is way more stable compared to K1600. DCT gearbox of Goldwing is a real gem. This bike even got the crawling feature. If someone is planning for a touring bike, then nothing is better than Goldwing. K1600 got much more powerful engine, and you can enjoy the power only during a short ride. People never do tour at a speed of 150mph and if someone will do tour at such a speed then the engine heat will roast their thighs. Most of the time bike will be running at 90-100mph, that's why Goldwing has got speed limit. Also, Goldwing has got better build quality compared to K1600 & people often forget to mention about this in their comparison videos.

Very accurate review (2016 GTL owner). Fell in love with the K1600 riding it for the 1st time during our 2-up tour through the Pyrenees-Spain and France. All those 180+ degree switchback climbs had me a bit worried, but the bike simply crushed it and was extremely confidence inspiring. It pulled in every gear. I did get leg cramps from time to time and some stopngo traffic felt heavy and sometimes fearful or dropping it during a few lunch and coffee stops. My 5'5" wife gave her experience as a pillion 10 out of 10 so I purchased a used one as soon as we returned to the U.S. Happy wife.... From a styling perspective, I much prefer the K over the G which I have not ridden. Now that I'm used to all the character flaws of the K1600, I have no regrets coming from several Yamaha FJRs. Too much tech is a distraction for me. Just gimme the wind, engine sound and some curves and I'm good to go.

I 100% agree with your assessment of the technology, in particular the phone compartment and the BMW app. I lusted after a K1600GT for years, and decided to wait until the 2022 model in order to get the TFT. Took delivery of an all black K1600GT in May, put 600 miles on it, and gave it back to the dealer. That phone compartment, and connectivity issues, paired with the jinky app were so frustrating that every ride I wound up a little bit more disappointed. Just bought a 2019 K1600GT and I am thrilled. Great review, very insightful and it is clear that you spent significant time on the bike - everything you pointed out is spot on.

You nailed the instability issue of the GA. I sold my 2018 Grand America because of it. I tried a different windscreens and tires to no avail, the stability issue was still there on the freeway. I’ve previously had a 2014 GTL, 2017 RT and other non-BMW bikes - none displayed the instability of the 2018 GA. I now have a 2022 GTL and no stability issues with it. BMW is aware of the issue, hence the bike being speed limited.

Up here in Canada, I never use regular fuel in any of my bikes, regardless of brand. The ethanol in the regular fuel actually attracts and absorbs water and really does a number on the tank and fuel system over the 6-7 months of storage over winter. The higher octane premium fuel doesn’t contain ethanol.

That was the most honest review I ever watched. I had a gold wind, made me a bobble head, the wind buffeting of my head I could just never solve, it also had a weird shimmy at about 65mph, the BMW K1200LT is the most confidence inspiring motorycle ride I ever had, the brakes are very touchy, they stop you in a heart bueat....I miss the goldwings low center of cravity and its better analog gages vs the high tech bs of BMW, but after a three hour ride, my butt was less sore on the Triumph Trouphy, the the goldwind, and finally the bmw....take that to the bank.

The power And comfort as well size is what keep me with my k1600, but what I go thru with this bike is another story. I always pize BMW and Mercedes from my and family experience, for they quality build and no issue, until in 2018 I bought new k1600 moving from Japanese bikes where change of oil was only thing to do but in BMW I had - failure of transmission, failure of engine /replaced, failure of switches on handlebar 3x, 4x replacement of Navi, abs failure. Now bike work fine with 50000miles on clock but the quality build stay in my head which affect my searching for new beast. I think I will end up with new gtl for size, power, comfort. I hope they fixt the issue with build that some k1600 pull to left if you barley touch handlebar because if you go trips like me from north Scotland to Croatia it affect your shoulder due to pushing bar constant to counteract bike pull. It’s amazing bike give you plenty smile and plenty visits in workshop too. Everything in that review is as the bike is apart long review knowledge. I am an owner of a 2022 Grand America and found your review very accurate. The power is amazing! The BMW connected app is poorly designed when compared to Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto. The wobble is perfectly described as disconcerting, but is not not always present and believe it or not feels quite normal after some time in the saddle. I purchased the bike because the looks appealed to me and for long trips through the Rockies, and have yet to be disappointed. I am constantly looking for reasons to get back on and ride. Thank you for your review. Very thorough and honest review. I have a 2018 GTL and love most everything about it. The bluetooth radio connections are abysmal, but I get around that by using my headset for music and phone. The engine is superb, and the quick-shifter is like butter. Highway pegs on the engine protecters are a life saver for extended rides. I have ordered a new GTL with the TFT screen and supposedly improved bluetooth, but now I wonder about my phone fitting the compartment. It is a heavy bike and not the best for around town. To counter that, I bought an R1250RS, which is lighter and much more nimble in town. I love the TFT screen and bluetooth connections. It makes a great commuting bike, and performance is fantastic, but it is NOT a touring bike. The quick-shifter is very clunky 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd, and I'm adjusting to that. I considered getting an R1250RT as a 1-bike-fits all, but after renting one for a tour in the European Alps, I find it considerably underpowered compared to the GTL and heavier than the RS with the same clunky quick-shifter. I have not ridden the Goldwing. Service on a Honda would be much closer to my home, but it seems to scrape underparts much more easily than the GTL.

On my third Goldwing since 2007 (currently 2019 DCT) I tried a K1600 GTL and I really wanted to like it, but like you said, the pegs are set up to high and back it was really hard on my knees and couldn't see myself riding long distances on it. The Grand America was a bit better but not much and the floor boards seemed to have just put my knees and hips in a different position but still tight. Also the maintenance cost; The Goldwing is kind of a 'set and forget' much like a car. Change oil, filters, and tires when they need it. The BMW seems to need this more often. I've never had to adjust valves on my Goldwings. I like the (much) larger gas tank on the BMW. I wish Honda came out with a 7 gal tank. The tires on a Goldwing are much wider and last longer. I couldn't afford to get a new set, possibly two sets of tires every year when I can get over twice the millage on my bikes than what I've seen people on the K 1600 forums say what they get. 7-8K on a set of tires? Is this correct? That seems crazy for a touring bike. The dealership I was at also told me putting a trail hitch on / towing with a BMW would void the warranty. Like I said, I really wanted to like it but it just doesn't fit me.

Dealer Network - CVO. Wing 2nd here. Materials - BMW. Ergonomics - Wing. Public attention - CVO & BMW. Honda is invisable with these 2 around. Motor - BMW…& maybe the deciding factor. I test drove a GA for an entire day and then test drove a New 18wing. I actually loved the GA far better than the wing for many reasons. My decision to buy the wing instead of the GA came down to maintenance costs, dealer network and parts availability. Far and away the GA was a lot more to maintain. I do know 2 people would bought GTL's and after 3 yrs traded them in due to issues and maintenance costs. Even the Honda Twin Africa 2022 already has Apple car play and Android Auto, but yeah, still, for its engine, it has its own place, like the R18. But sometimes riding a bike is not always about comfort, ease to use, etc., but it is a passion to listen to the engine or other reasons. Hey, I'm a big fan of your channel. I own a 2013 K 1600 GT and put about 16K miles on it so far, mostly on longer tours. I can say that the stability issues may be just with the B version or Grand America. I really haven't had that with my base K 16. Maybe a little on windy days, but, less than with other bikes I've owned. As far as comfort, I'm 6'2" and even with the GT model, there is very limited leg room. I put an bead seat cover on which gives me a little more room. I can also say that once moving, this bike is like a giant sport bike with engine power everywhere and very strong brakes. The luggage capacity is impressive, and the handling is excellent over about 5 mph. I think the only thing that makes me nervous is if I need to back up when facing downhill. If you're alone, this could be a problem, so, it requires planning. The newer ones come with reverse, so, if I was to get another one, I would definitely get one with the reverse option. Anyway, thanks for your reviews. You are definitely one of the best bike reviewers on KZbin.

You spoke briefly about the instability issue with the Grand America and said it was only an issue on this model. That is NOT what I am hearing. It was first reported on the GTL and since then I have run across this issue on every k1600 model. It seems to occur in dirty air. Meaning when in heavy traffic, around semi-truck and windy days most often. In calm weather and no other traffic near you it seems to be less of a problem. What's keeping me from buying a GTL..this exact issue. I've gone back and forth between the GTL and the Harley Davidson Road Glide, the Road Glide is winning even though it cost more initially and you are going to spend a great deal more making it what you want to ride. The biggest advantage to the GTL or any K1600 is it comes from the factory maxed out with horsepower and pretty much all the goodies you want.

Truly brutally honest. My takeaways: - The 6 cylinder is awesome!!!! Buy it only for that - There's plenty to mildly complain about

I’ve always thought I’d consider the 1600B if I was ever looking for more of a street tourer that wasn’t an adventure bike. And mainly for that engine!

As someone who owned the K 1600 B in the past - this Review is Spot on. Even the B was not as stable as it should on the Highway. The shorter screen on the B was super annoying that I had to add a deflector. The bags CANNOT be removed on the B and GA while the GT and GTL bags are removable??? Come on Berlin! It does feel super top heavy and therefore with the full tank of gas, you will drop it in the parking lot with the slightest lose or slippery surface under your boots. Get rear protection bars from Illium so you won't damage your bags. Installing is super annoying because removing the bags are painful!!! Would I buy it again? NO! For long distance touring as well as weekend rides, get the RT instead if you can find one in today's tight market.

I think it’s the wind hitting the floorboards making it a little bit unstable. I have a Yamaha Royal star and at 120-140 kml per hour, I can put it on cruise control and ride without any hands touching the handle bars. It tracks extremely straight. I want this one though. Have a blessed day.

I had a 2020 Harley Limited and they fixed the wandering and buffeting issue by cutting a vent hole at the bottom of the windshield. This reduced the pressure on the front of the bike and most importantly erased the pressure bubble behind the windshield where the buffeting would occur. So if your bike does this, get out your sawzall guys and start cutting, or, just order a windshield with a vent hole, your pick.

The K1600GT doesn't come with the top case (which is reported to cause some high speed instability) and is not limited to 100 mph. If you like scary fast, this is the bike is for you.

The UK Honda ST1300 Pan European had an issue with stability at high speeds (Police bike speeds), however, there were two issues found. First the swinging arm system had to be strengthened from 2004 onwards and secondly, the tyre pressures have to be spot on, 42psi front and rear. These bikes (BMW K1600) are the heaviest bikes on the road and crucially, the speeds you were talking about when the instability kicked in are illegal speeds? I owned the GTLE and although I loved the inline 6 power plant, comfort and tech, I found it simply too cumbersome to handle on twisty high country roads of the UK. We went back to the Yamaha FJR1300AE. Good review though.

I did a test ride on the ga the other day and felt that bobbing. Not the end of the world but sure would get old on a long ride. That engine sure is silky smooth and that's the reason I bought a 1250rt instead. Need some rumble. I actually like the tft display. I think that bike needs a software update. Earlier versions the dial wouldn't control the volume. Most recent version fixes many bugs including that. Using the 4 quick buttons make navigation really easy. Great bike but expensive to service. I'll stick to the boxer.

That is an absolute beast! Seems like that big of a motor would make a little more than 160 hp. I sure wouldn't want to take it down a dirt road. Honestly, at 800 + lbs, I'd be a little leary about riding it period. I'd love to see one with a bren tune and aftermarket exhaust! I'll stick with the Africa Twin. As always, very good review Ian. You may make me change my mind about the AT eventually, lol.

Thanks for the review. We have the 2019 grand america version, so not quite the same, but close. We always ride 2 up and replaced the tires immediately, so we haven't experienced some of the same things you describe. We love it. Everyone has their own experiences, but for us, this bike is very close to perfect, and I wouldn't give it up for anything.

Very well done and honest review. That wandering around would wear me out especially in WY, MT, other places out west where the wind is never ending. That 100 MPH Granny control bothers me, not because I necessarily want to go over 100, but it sounds like a ghost hiding in the closet in reference to high speed handling and safety. I don't really like the '18 and up new model 'Wing for several reasons. For now I think I'll just keep my old low tech, steam gauge '13 Wing. I do like the competitive pricing on the BMW and that Indy car sound of the engine. I'm really not mature enough to own a 160 HP bike! Thanks for the ride along, Happy Trails!

Finally got to ride this motorcycle, I thought overall it was a great motorcycle. I did not find an issue with the tracking as you pointed out. I also like the forward floorboards, but wish the pegs and foot controls were a bit more forward. I also wish they added a GPS instead of using the mobile phone for its GPS. There are times when I lose cell service which would render the map useless. I wish BMW added more storage space in the front for glasses, garage door opener, gloves, etc. This motorcycle is definitely a contender and could make me leave the Harley world 😃

This wobbling effect is commonly known on several motorcycles with a huge topcase. Try to ride with a second passenger, because this will change the aerodynamic caused by the topcase.

Took me a few years to truly "grow into" my 2018 K1600GTL but now I feel like it "shrunk" down to the size of an Fj1300R. Nimble AF! I can go interstate, no problem. After 63 years of "being ridden hard and put away wet". I feel like I'm 35 when the corners come into view. Does the GW make anybody feel like that? I have no problem with everybody having their opinions, but, in my opinion, (with never having ridden a GW) These two bikes are really not comparable. The K1600 is closer to the FJ1300 than it is to the GW1800. The GW is comfort touring. The K is SPORT tourer. My K16 is like "goes by itself" now. I look, it goes there. Effortlessly. Poetry in Motion.

I like the motor on this bike, but I bought the Gold Wing DCT because the peg to seat distance was too close. My knees were too cramped on the Beemer. I’ve had the DCT for 2 years now and added a Corbin seat and fully adjustable Helibar setup. For a touring bike it’s just hard to beat. I still love my BMW GS adventure and Yamaha FJR1300 too.

What a close debate between a new GW and the K1600GLT. I want one or the other and can’t decide. Pros and cons to both. But that in-line 6 is amazing.

This new BMW rocks! It sounds amazing, and is obviously fast and super smooth. Anyone contemplating a new Harley must reconsider this option. My CVO Ultra Classic is a heavy slug, that runs hot all the time, and is an antique compared to the engineering of these new BMW’s. If I could just find a fool to buy my bike at a huge discount of its price new, this is the next bike for me.

I did chose the K1600GTL over the Goldwing. Mainly because of the engine and the handling. If I was going to do it again I'd get the Goldwing for only one reason. Although I still prefer the BMW, there is just way more Honda dealers for service vs BMW. When traveling if there's a problem, the distance a BMW service area could be quite great. This did go thru my mind traveling from Milwaukee to Dallas.

I rode five K1600's before deciding on a (used) Triumph Trophy SE 1215. As much as I liked the K1600, I felt the gearbox was VERY clunky and that it was slow to respond (to steering input). The Trophy has about 22 fewer horsepower but it also weighs less so the acceleration feels very similar. I'm not sure if the Trophy has a shorter wheelbase (I think it does) but it's much more responsive to rider input. Also...55.7 MPG average ;) . Af for wind buffeting...NONE. With the stock windscreen, it was great but, with the National Cycles Touring windscreen, I could use a match to light a cigarette at 80mph (if I smoked). Lastly, it was many thousands less money for the same model year and has similar creature comforts...power windscreen, ABS, radio, Bluetooth, C/C, electronically adjustable suspension, luggage, etc. Blah blah blah...just a better bike FOR ME.

I got the same bike too 😎😎 the motor on the K1600 sounds better for sure but like you the price difference was $10,000 in Canada. I bought a v nose motorcycle trailer with the $10K I saved 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️ then I heard of all the gearbox issues on the K1600 so it makes me happy I bought the Trophy SE. One question…do you have any front wheel wobble at around 50-60kmh. Mine does and dealer cannot find anything wrong but if I take my hands off the bars they shake excessively 🤷♂️🤷♂️ not sure if it’s the Dunlop tires I put on it this time, usually I’ve ran the Pirelli tires that came originally. But because of Covid supply issues I had to settle for Dunlop tires. Ride safe 👍👍👍

My 22B seemed to have a lazy/laggy throttle and felt somewhat restricted in the lower rpm range, put a bren tune on it and that resolved all of those issues, it also got rid of the new crazy high cold start idle on the 22’s

Considering how much time and care BMW seems to put in much of their products, when something leaves the factory with such a stark flaw in the design like with the Grand America wander, you know it was a rush job. I get it, anyone in project management knows there are just some jobs that go out where you aren’t completely satisfied with the end product, but it’s up to the top management to say “no, we can’t risk harming our image and reputation”. This design flaw also reminds me of the power flat spot right in the middle of the S1000RR power band. Something like that absolutely should not be signed off by upper management as “ready for production”.

Good video. Just turned in my K1600 for a T120 Bonneville because of all the reasons you describe. . .and it made a bit say for all the reasons you describe. Ultimately gave up on all the tech (I had the full tech package on my 2016 GTL, and just connected my IPhone directly to my Carda PackTalk Bold. Don’t even get me started about the BMW integration of phone, GPS, Intercom. . .It was a $400 joke, the worst I’ve ever used. But that engine. . .my God that engine. I will miss it. I prefer the smaller cc bikes because of weight but years back I made a big mistake buying a brand new Honda CTX700 instead of the Honda NC700, after spending over $1500 extra just trying to improve the ride comfort I finally gave up and bought the NC750 and have had no regrets, just the extra inch and a half of rear suspension and the upright seating position made a Hugh difference on my back

Nice video. Very informative. Great job! And wow, that engine sound is off the charts amazing!!! Formula 1 car for sure. I normally love a Japanese inline 4 but man, bmw inline 6, just wow! And at same time not surprising coming from a company that produced other amazing engines like the v10 in the 2006 M5 and many many others. On the flip side, at 2024 prices of 32k OTD, this is not a poor man's bike. 😂 Future bike shoppers take note of depreciation and relish in what an amazing bike can be had for so much less than new. 😂

Just sold my GTL. Kept it after I bought my GSA because I thought the GSA wasn’t exciting enough for on-road only touring. Turns out, after a Brentuning stage 2 jit was fitted, it became totally redundant and the rider triangle isn’t nearly s comfy as the GSA. Love that bike though.
