Yes! If you think of it like a standard compact sport sedan, it seems expensive compared to its rivals. But drive it. Feel the M worthy reactions to your inputs, hear that sonorous inline-six pump out a creamy tone, and enjoy all the benefits of a well-built, properly tuned compact sport sedan.
In this video, I take you through the car, show you what features are offered and how they work. And then I take you on a drive that includes an acceleration test, a handling test, and a ride on the freeway. When combined, I hope it give you a good and broad sense of what this Genesis and why I think it’s a true contender.

Who is Robin Warner? - Brief description and bio
Robin spent five years of his adult life as an engineer. Four years at a Tier One supplier, TRW Automotive (now ZF TRW Auto), working as a traction and stability control calibration engineer, and little over a year as a vehicle dynamics engineer at Ford Motor Company.
Furthermore, he spent 15 years of his adult life holding different editor positions at various magazines, including Associate Technical Editor at Car and Driver, Road Test Editor at Road & Track, and Managing Editor at Autoweek.
Robin also spent several years racing. He started in autocross, then bought a go-kart and then another one. Having a lot of success, including a Great Lakes Sprint Series championship in 2002, he moved to single-seaters, racing in the 2003 Skip-Barber Midwest Championship, the 2003-2004 Skip Barber Southern Championship, and the 2004 Formula Dodge National Championship.

Thank you for the in-depth review of this car. You answered several questions that I had about this car. There is one at my local dealership that I have been looking at online. It's Mineral Grey Metallic, which I love, with Tacora Red interior. When my finances come through, I look forward to test driving it and I am sure I will love and buy it. Hope it is still available. Again, really enjoyed your review and descriptions of this vehicle. You helped me to make my decision about this car.

The best review by far, I drive the 2022 M340i myself and second all of this, just that I upgraded my exhausts and drive the 19 inch low profile tyres, and I save 0.3 seconds with 100 octane (claimed) fuel. so for me it was 0-100 in 3.9s with my stuff loaded in the trunk like my cricket kit, etc. All in all, perfect review. Do check out mine that's coming out as well. Small correction though, these are BMW LASER lights (adaptive) and not LED, rest, wisdom coming from an ENGINEER and not a cliché sales guy, well done m8, a doctors review following soon :) and yes, ill pass the Genesis for all good reasons you stated.

There are guys on good summer tires getting sub 4.0 sec 0-60 bone stock and running high 11's in the 1/4 mile. These new M340i's are as fast as the F80 and about neck and neck with the RWD G80 and as fast as the G80 X-drive with some bolt on's for about 20 grand cheaper and better daily driving commuting road manners. After driving both the new LCI m340i and a new RWD M3 comp and a new M5, the m340i feels like a lower case M5 more than a neutered M3. The M340i has the road manners and more tame throttle response and softer suspension of the M5 and also even looks like a slightly smaller M5. It feels more nimble than the M5 though. Also, the m340i I drove had the M-sport exhaust and it sounded amazing. I liked the sound better than the M3.

Most M340i Vins starts with a 3 which means it’s made in Mexico. Can you special order one from W Germany?

In the review you said the car had "M Sport Suspension" but in the options list I see the "M Adaptive Suspension" which is very different. My understanding of the Adaptive suspension is that you can set it at "Comfort, Sport and Sport +" just like the engine/transmission settings, with the standard "M Sport Suspension" sitting somewhere between Comfort and Sport. So the Adaptive Suspension gives you a broader range - its comfort setting will be softer than the standard M Sport Suspension, but its Sport and Sport + will be noticeably stiffer than the M Sport Suspension. This would make it a very compelling option indeed.

Yes, my test car came with the optional "Adaptive M suspension," which does indeed enhance things beyond the standard M Sport suspension. But telling folks about the M sport suspension still applies for the sake of the more rigid bearings, stiffer springs, anti-roll bars, etc. when compared to a non-M 3-series. The Adaptive M suspension adds adaptive shock absorbers on top of that, which does indeed give even more flexibility in stiffness and body control depending on which drive modes selected.

True, from a powertrain perspective, they are similar. But chassis set up is a fair amount different. The base level M car for the 5 series is the M550i and even though it gets WAY more power, I feel that is a little more appropriate comparison myself. Just passed 1000 miles, it still feels amazing. I'm taking it to Germany next month, the 2 series rental I had last week back at home just didn't do the trick.

Exactly right. Engine of course, but also suspension and brakes are upgraded over the standard 3-series.

Biggest let-down with this car is the lack of cooled seats. My 2017 Mustang GT premium ($38k MSRP) has both heated and cooled seats. Personally I never use the heated seats, but in the heat of the summer the cooled seats are fantastic.

This car is excellent, for me it's a less powerd m5 ,its by no means slow,uts quick and with a easy tune you go up in the 400s bhp easily.For me the mercedes c43 and the audi s4 and even the A5 is no match to the M340i.

I'm confused about your comment regarding the wireless charging. Doesn't this car have wireless charging? The BMW builder says it's included with the premium package.

Sadly, no. The premium package does not include wireless smartphone charging. That pad is only there to recognize the key card for a setup BMW digital key, which can be Android phones only, by the way. Wireless smartphone charging is available as a standalone option for $500.

When I test drove one I had to check with the salesman that it was stop/start, it's so subtle. More like a murmur. I bought the car. @@viewsonvehicles

In the market for a new sports sedan. I narrowed it down to TLX Type S (test driven and liked it), M340i (not test driven), and the CTV5 (not test driven). Out of these 3 options which one would you say is the best overall? Which one provides the best performance and handling?

The good news is that all three are great cars, so to a certain extent, you can't go wrong. The Type S is all-wheel-drive, are you looking at all-wheel-drives versions of the Bimmer and Caddy? If so, I wrote an article about the CT4V a couple years back and found the AWD version of it underwhelming when compared to the RWD model. But, when it comes to pure driving feel, the M340i wins out. Better weight distribution, great chassis balance, and that super creamy Inline-six. @@viewsonvehicles Test drive both cars and then make your mind up. 3 years ago, I drove both the last generation 340i and also the M3. If I had a choice I would have bought the M3, but the grill is so ugly...

I driven all three. The M340i is hands down the best of the three when it comes to handling dynamics and overall performance. I really like all 3 but the m340i is the best all round car in this segment

The TLX Type S is the worst in class. It’s the slowest (realistically pulling 0-60 near a second slower than the m340i, completely gapped). It’s reliably ratings are actually lower. It’s heavier and handles like a boat. Worse MPG. The only pro to the Acura is it’s cheaper. But if you want to save money, just buy a genesis 3.3T. If you want the best in class, m340i xdrive all day.

Well, it’s close, but BMW named it Daytona Violet Metallic, which is a touch more matte than Thundernight metallic, in my opinion. I think the point is, if you want a purple car and have an extra $4500 to spend, you can get one.

I didn't see it as an option. Heated seats and a heated steering wheel, but not cooled seats.

It was long enough ago that I'm sorry to say I do not remember. I do know that it comes with same size and width tire front and back as standard. But if you go with the HP tire package, that might make it staggered.

@@marko_nikic Did some digging, turns out this is a color you special order from BMW Individual. That means it's not on the standard list of colors, but is definitely available. I did a quick google of "BMW individual" and a couple of clicks got me to here: visualizer.bmw-individual.com/Ipps/bmwoac?page=imc&market=80001-DE&dc=1-1&header=1&qrcode=1&pdf=1&lang=EN#top And then I found the color. I hope this helps!

Unfortunately, because the 2023 model overlap is happening, BMW could not change the color as this process would take more time, and they are gearing for 2023 models. So, I have to stick with blue for now. The website you sent is beneficial and will be bookmarked on my end for future use.

$70k....could get a CT4 V BW with magnetorheological suspension, manual shifter, vented seats, etc.....like BMWs, but that Caddie so much value.

You're right. And I do LOVE the Blackwing, but, I dunno, on regular roads this car feels fantastic and there's something about having an inline-six verses a V that is compelling. It’s definitely not an M car. Anyone looking for a full fledged M car would be let down by this car. But it’s not meant to be an “M” car. It’s meant to have the M team make it a lot better than a normal 3 series. Which it’s everything I want. It’s the perfect daily driver I feel. But it’s not an M car and if you want the full M experience, you get an M3 (and can afford it lol).

You are correct. It is not an M Car. The reviewer is off base by continually referring to it as an M Car. It diminishes any kind of claim he might make to being any kind automotive expert.

This Not the M car, But 3 series at high-end(the 'M'340 is marketing for a good reason). The question is that if you have to pay this car about the same price at the last gen M3 (over $70K), should you buy a non M3 or M3 of last gen. You pay what you get.

It's certainly not as potent as a full-on M3, but it IS an M car in the sense that it has more motor than the other 3's and bigger brakes and stiffer suspension tune. You're also right that BMW wanted to cash in on the marketing cache of the M Brand and expand the line-up. But, critically, it's not just a look, but real equipment that makes for a more capable car. And, finally, you're right again, a used M3 for the same money would be a wonderful thing indeed.

Why would you get an M3 when this is better.. faster 0-60 (3.6-3.8) way better fuel economy.. I guess if you really need that top end of speeds over 155 mph.

I test drove one and almost bought it right there. I make $200k/year but I can’t justify spending more than 40K on any car. Just feels so wrong to be that careless with money. This model in particular depreciates like crazy, so maybe I’ll just buy a 2020 or 2019 model. I really don’t know why Audi’s hold their value but BMW M’s do not. Anyone know why and who cares to explain?

I am with you and a big believer in purchasing used myself. Did so with many BMWs as well as the Audi A6 and Lexus RX I currently own. Both are 2013 model year cars, purchased under 33% of MSRP when new, and behave splendidly. You go for a new model if you're picky about the details, like exterior/interior color combination. And, gotta say, this Daytona Violet Metallic special paint is compelling.

Lots of myths here. It’s a nice car but not a real M. Gas mileage is a complete lie. You are not getting anywhere near the mileage you quoted. I like it but it’s still 60k.

Zero myths here. I quoted the EPAs numbers. And, as far as BMW is concerned, it’s an M car. I said myself that it’s no where near the M3, but it’s also a healthy chunk less expensive and the chassis balance is superb.
