Really well-done video, thoughtful and interesting. I appreciate all of the B-roll ever so much. I think it's a fantastic idea to do a ranking list a year after the year in question has passed in order to give more time to play various games and really get a sense of them and your opinion of them. It's very helpful for giving an idea of some really good games to look into to determine if I want to buy them or not. The one problem I had with the video was that you were out of focus the entire time. It was a bit of a challenging watch because of that.

Thanks for the kind words! Not sure what happened with the focus, everything looked alright before I started filming but I noticed I was slightly out of focus too. Hopefully that didn't detract too much from the video, and I'll be more mindful of that going forward.

I really enjoyed the format of this! You talked about some games that I saw no content on from this past year, which was nice, and had some interesting opinions about other games! I also love the b roll of seeing all the game components. I also liked that you used the BGG rating system as its easy to follow and compare other games to. Can't wait to see your top 10!

I’m awaiting an order that included “Sea, Salt & Paper”. I ordered its very small expansion, “Extra Salt”, as well, which I believe adds just eight cards with added strategic possibilities. Once the base game is learned, most rating comments give it a thumbs up and mention it is added seamlessly into the deck. Thanks for this video. You give well thought out insights to your experience with all of the games tiered. You have me interested in “Gangs of Dice”. I’m always on the lookout for fun family friendly games.

Gang of Dice is fantastic and it's one of the ones I mentioned that I've actually only played on BGA. I can only imagine it's even better in-person. And I've gone up and down a bit on Sea Salt & Paper. At first I thought it was interesting but didn't love it, then it grew on me a bunch, and then my opinion of it dipped again. So who knows - in the future I might look back on the list and regret where I put it, but for now this is where it belongs.

Recency bias is a thing for sure, and it's tough sometimes to separate your own opinion from something when everyone else is raving about it. Good to know something in here resonated with you though. And C Tier games are still good games for me, but yeah, not quite must-own games that I'm ever going to be the one to suggest.

Really interesting list. I disagree on a couple of games from a personal perspective but really appreciate your viewpoints- the fact it's such a broad church is what makes this hobby so good.

Well said. Some of my favourite reviewers are people who I disagree with quite a bit on preferences of games. It's really nice to see such diversity in opinions which isn't always the case in other hobbies (like video games, from what I remember when I was into them a lot more).

Thanks for the kind words! Nah, that comment didn't really bother me in terms of taking it personally, I know what I do/don't like in games and we have a successful channel with tons of viewers who agree AND disagree with us. More than anything, I just imagined that person making those same comments to other reviewers/content creators, especially those with smaller channels, and the thought of that bothers me more. The smaller the channel, the fewer comments you get, and I remember the days when that sort of thing used to be discouraging. It just feels unnecessary for someone to say that - if they don't like the content they can just stop watching.

I have to hand it to you Carlo. You have really been puttin in the work lately. And it's all been a very good quality. I think this list is pretty good so far. I haven't played all of them, so I can't fully comment on everything. But I think I largely agree, with a few exceptions. Can't wait to see what the top 10 will be.

@AllYouCanBoard Even though I didn't get to play it till this year, I think Heat is the game that stands out to me the most. It has loads of replay-ability and customization. And a cool theme to boot. Great table presence as well. So o would have to put that at the top I think. But I'm sure there are other great games I just haven't played yet.

Hey, thanks for saying that! As someone who also watches board game content on KZbin (and did before we started our own channel), I always appreciate the creators who highlight older games as well. It's so tough to distance yourself from that recency bias, especially when so many people are raving about the same game at the same time. Plus, most of my favourite games came out a long time ago, and it's sad to see how many of those get forgotten. Between the 3 of us on the channel, we really want to showcase great games regardless of how old/new they are, because a lot of people who are new to the hobby are flooded with the "cult of the new". Curious which game do you think fell the most in your ranking after you played it more?

Haha, I meant that *I* personally find myself not being interested by what my opponents are doing a lot of the time, that might partly explain why I'm not very good at it, but either way I realize that might not apply to everyone. Great game and we're spoiled by being able to play it async on BGA. The games that fell most with additional plays would probably be Sobek: 2 Players, Sea Salt & Paper, Applejack, Splendor Duel, and Planet Unknown. In no particular order.

@@AllYouCanBoard Yeah I think it has that almost Agricola-like property in which you originally don't care much about what your opponent is doing and you're just analyzing your available options on each turn and picking the best one, but then the more you start incorporating your opponents' options and board state into your own decisions the better you'll do. Probably true of a lot of Euros though.

I just find it tough to stay engaged when it's not my turn, I feel more disconnected from my opponents than I'd like for such a long game.

Putting spots in the top 3 games will make most people take the ratings with a grain of salt. He prefers small, often lightweight, luck driven and push your luck games. Shocked Patchwork isnt his #1.

Azul: Queen's Garden is probably my wife's favourite board game of all time, and I think Wizards of the Grimoire is a very fun 1-on-1 game with incredible variety. Meanwhile Isle of Cats: Explore & Draw is probably my least favourite game of the year just because the markers (that I got at least) are terrible to the point of rendering the game unplayable.

Yeah those dry erase markers are brutal quality, a bunch of mine don't work properly either. Pretty frustrating, just a waste of plastic going straight into a landfill.

@@AllYouCanBoard Part of the problem is that the boat you draw on is so dark that the markers really don't come out properly when drawing on it. If the boat was near-white with grey dotted lines for the squares the markers would have 'popped' more and the poor quality would have been less of a problem.

Haha, I've gone back and forth so many times. I heard a podcast episode where they talked about how to pronounce it correctly, and then looked it up online and it seems like it depends which country you're in. I thought I was pronouncing it "correctly" but I could be wrong (again depending on the country).

I feel that you should have done it in the more traditional style of tier videos where they just have a pool of games and talk through and rank them rather than already categorising all the games into tiers. Kinda took the fun and anticipation out of the video. Still will watch it through though.

Hmm, not a bad idea, I honestly hadn't even thought of that, mostly because I like the "countdown" style and actually ordering the games from 63-1, and even for editing purposes it would be more work (and look messy on screen) to have all the tiers there at once and have games shuffling around to make room. But I appreciate the feedback and I will take this into consideration for next time. Thanks!
