Too bad the big 3 domestic auto crooks petitioned Congress decades ago to not allow these on the roads unless they were 25 years or older. They were afraid of the competition and quality of the JDM/KEI trucks and vehicles. I'd love to own and drive the new KEI trucks all day every day. Thanks for the excellent video 👍🙂

Got a new 2021 Hijet Jumbo registered in Alabama last year. It's possible here due to a loophole. It's shipped as off-road use only governed at 25mph. The dealer receives it and cuts the wire. Easy to register it here without a title. Just a bill of sale. Non interstate use is the only restriction and its stated on the tag.

Honestly, kei trucks need to be sold in the US. They're perfect as fleet vehicles, for the city where bigger trucks aren't ideal, and for rental companies. There is a definite market for these as evidenced by the Chinese-made mini trucks you see around some urban areas. However, those aren't nearly as safe or high-quality as the kei trucks.

I live in Michigan and we have loads of these all over the place. I also know most states allow these for Farm/ATV use. We can buy one with an ATV title, drive it on a farm, drive it in all our small towns that allow ATV's, just can't license it for the highway. =)

Wow 2047 hahah, that sucks. Also i just got recommended this video. So thanks for reviewing this. While it sucks for the US due to the import laws. Australia updated their import laws to let in Kei cars including brand new ones without the 25yr old rule. Main reason because they are economical and cheap to run. As there is no English reviews for these trucks and I want to personally import one myself, this is best review on the tubes. So thanks. I should go talk to my importer about getting one :P

Hard cargo stuff isn't a optional extra from the factory. It just a brand that modifieds kei trucks. You can send your truck off to them to modified it or you can order all the parts and get it shipped to you to do it yourself. I do believe possible sometime it can be done through certain dealerships but it not limited to dihatsu. I am planning on getting one of them roof racks for my 96 carry at somepoint.

In Oklahoma they are considered UTV's and can be driven on roads with speeds under 55. Cannot be driven on interstates.

Really want to get one. In my state they are sold as “off road vehicles only” but off road vehicles can be licensed to be driven on roads except interstates. Same with 4 wheelers and side by sides. So could buy a new mini truck and pretty much drive it any where in my state. Would have to bypass the speed limiter to make it useful.

Was watching special features of a movie and all vrew were riding in diesel vw crew cab trucks. US had them till like '82 but only 2dr gas. Love these k trucks and vans. Sadly US has banned many vehicles that our auto makers don't want to compete with. Especially all the vehicles getting over 50mpg

In Canada, its 15 years old across the board to the month. Its a felony to import a kei or any non-North American vehicle into Canada if its newer than that with steep fines. Quebec is 25 years old to be street legal and PEI doesn't allow on-road use at all.

could you not get a used modern one and swap all the tech onto a 25 year old chassis that is already registered? then you could have a new(ish) road legal one. there is an importer here in the uk selling them new, they are asking 18k once tax is paid on them though so far too expensive so that would be about 23000 in USD

All kei cars and trucks will have 64 hp most of the time post 2000s for their mid to higher specs.... Unless they cheat their power curves by under-rating, which is rare.

Obviously, cab over pickups wont do too well in crash tests, much less for kei cars. Especially ones with barely any nose.... Your legs are the crumple zone! But so does ATVs and SxS's and those cheap DIY chinese tiny pickups anyway. Blunt hooded kei truck's can atleast protect you in low speeds just fine. (some kei cars that has a notable hood/nose may have on-par safety with regular cars)

So my confusion in all this is that the regulations that are imposed on these vehicles is all based on the IMPORTATION of them, and not the actual registration. Nowhere does Federal Law specifically say that these vehicles cannot be registered(which registration falls to each individual state on what they want to allow or not allow on roads), it only pertains to what is allowed to be shipped into the country. The 25 year waiting period is so that a vehicle can be classified as a "classic" and then does not have to follow certain EPA regulations. However, EPA regulations and importation laws do not directly apply to each other, the largest point to that argument is that there are PLENTY of vehicles that are in USA that do not meet EPA regulations and cannot be registered. It should be noted that most LSV's that are registered that operate on a gas engine do not meet EPA regulations. It can also be noted that most buses across America do not meet the newer EPA standards. So with just this quick google search of how things are worded and what grammar is used where, why do we have to wait so long to register them?

The small percentage of kei truck enthusiasts in the US has a significant impact on the small 25+ year old keitora market in Japan, so the price of 25-30 year old kei trucks is being artificially inflated by US regulations. It seems crazy that I spent $2000 to ship a Hijet that I bought for $265 but crazy as it is, the math worked for me and I'm a very happy camper. If not for regulations, I'd have bought a $3K to $5K mini truck that was much newer and spent $2000 to ship it. A 2010 kei truck is safer than my 2019 motorcycle but the newer kei truck is illegal to drive on the road because of safety regulations. It makes no sense. I had an experimental airplane that a guy built in his garage. I had it over 200 MPH, and there was no regulation protecting me from doing that. In a free country, people should be able to do as they please as long as it doesn't hurt others. If I rammed my Hijet full speed into, say, a 4Runner, it'd do some body damage and my insurance would reimburse the 4Runner owner. Even for those who believe in nanny state government protecting us from ourselves, the only person endangered by a tiny slow kei truck not meeting NHTSA standards would be the kei truck driver and any passenger they may have who would know by looking at it that it's not NHTSA approved. If that's not enough, post a sticker to inform the passenger. My experimental plane had a placard indicating that it's EXPERIMENTAL and does not meet FAA certification standards (it exceeds them).

The new rocky's are not the same as the old ones. They sell them here in Indonesia and they are made like a city car. It's exactly like they did with the chevy blazer. I don't get it. Those models are known for being tough and going through the mud or snow and they just ruined them.
