@C64SX Жыл бұрын
I was pleasantly surprised to see they go for 120 degree V6 now, instead of the more common 90 degrees that we see in so many modern cars. The 90 just tells me it's a V8 with two cyls chopped off, and a compromise because they prioritize production costs above technical advantages. The best classic V6s are 60 degrees (Busso for example), and now finally we get 120 degrees in road cars (expensive ones, unfortunately).

You are absolutely correct about the side profile of this car being tremendous! Somehow i feel like we havent really gotten a "poster car" that looks this good since the 458. And i still cannot tell, if i like the looks of this or the 458 more. The 458 front end is just so beautifully crafted, all the lines (and there really aren't that many) look like they are drawn there by an artist working at a sketchpad. The front end of this still looks too much like a production car for me, the 458 looks like a pure concept we normally never get to see.

296 front looks like some kid designer tried too hard to impress the boss. It's not organic and it clashes with the basic shape of the car. Rear borrows too much from various Lotus models. Ferrari does not need superficial cues to broadcast substance.

Hi Jay, I have a GTS on order - I went out to Spain on one of their customer experiences and echo most of your thoughts. One thing to note, re the gearbox, I had it explained to me that it may sound like the box is taking a bit of time on the way up, but that it's actually due to the electric motor deploying in that phase "filling" - so while it may sound slow, your total accel is unaffected. Interesting tidbit I felt. Not sure of the technicalities behind it or how true it is, but it was one of the drivers sat next to me as we lapped!

2:12 i've heard this before. I've also heard that this is false. It was said that the "Dino" brand was named after Enzo's son who died a while before the introduction of the brand, and that that rumor was peddled by people who felt that any Ferrari without a V8 or V12 was not a "true Ferrari", not Enzo himself. BTW, the paintjob doesn't go well on this car. The interior is even worse.
@iannjoroge5867 Жыл бұрын
I wonder why that "Enzo deemed it not be a Ferrari and named it Dino" is still a thing when Enzo named it after a Son who died too young. @@JayEmmOnCarsDino wasn’t a subbrand, they’re literally known as Ferrari Dino’s, and you’re very wrong, Enzo wanted to honor his son who died while developing his passion project at Ferrari; the V6 engine. That same engine ended up being the greatest Formula 2 engine for over a decade btw. That’s why those cars held the Dino name, but they’re still Ferrari cars, Dino was never a brand, the whole point of the Dino badge was that it was the actual signature of Enzo’s son, and he visited his son’s grave daily until the day he also died. Enzo never saw the V6 as below the Ferrari brand, quite the opposite

Honestly, the 296's engine reminds me of the Nissan 350/370Z's V6 or the Skyline straight 6, both engines I am a fan of. And I'm willing to bet the hybrid gubbins are helping that low down torque so the ICE can still be a high revving thing, basically allowing Ferrari to have their cake and eat it as well., which is good engineering in my mind. Definitely not a fan of the colour scheme, the blue is too in the face and the wheels just make me think of hot-boys modding their Corsa C's back in the day, not sure what Ferrari were thinking aside from 'you'll definitely see it coming'. I suspect in a more traditional red or black it'll look stunning.

The V-angle is 120 degrees because that is the natural firing interval for a V6. Few manufacturers have used it in road cars because it is too wide to be packaged for RWD and FWD cars and once you’re that wide, it’s not much more to just do a boxer. Engines with different V-angles usually use split pin crankshafts which are heavier than 120 degree. 60 degrees is common because that’s about as narrow as you can go while having room for manifolds between and because simply halving 120 degrees feels good. 90 degrees is common because those engines share manufacturing tooling with the flagship V8 engines.

Anyway, I’ve been very nervous about my omission of the AF package but 1) the car is already shockingly dear, (90K more than my soon arriving technica!) and 2) the bumpy road button plus lift makes the car so useable on our sorry American roads especially in nyc. I feared it would be a blunder in the vein of Porsche Weissach omission but you’ve quelled my concerns. Harry also felt it spoiled the car. Appreciate all the work beyond words. A Jay approved car is now a requisite for me. If you, Harry, Chris, and or/Clarkson stand by it, that’s a damn good sign. Seems this one’s a future 458 in terms of universal adoration. Cheers.

It's unfortunately a sign of the very poor thinking of governments and car manufacturers alike that they think it is better to make a disposable car that generates a little less CO2, but will be junk in 10 years than a car that could still be around in 50 or more.

As someone who is unlikely to ever own a car in this category, the question I always have is whether ownership and performance (ignoring financial investment ) of a car which costs £250k delivers notably more than a car that costs, for example, £120k. As someone who actually has to consider money, maybe i'm totally missing the point and cars in this category are for people who needn't make such considerations. But I can't help but think i'd rather have 2 Supercars than one. If there was such a thing as a blind taste test for cars (eg; you own a car for a week without knowing its value), could you really tell which one costs over £100k more? I highly doubt it.
@Corvolet5 Жыл бұрын
The only reason you would actually buy a Ferrari is because of the flat plane V8 making eargasmic sounds. Honestly Ferrari has been slowly dying since the day they discontinued the F12 and the 458. There's a reason people jumped over to the Huracan for the sound and to McLaren for the performance.
@maaasaa Жыл бұрын
James, your concern around range is not warranted. Recent trip: 550km at 60 mph av = 31 mpg. Qualifying mode to quickly recharge. It’s interesting to manage this aspect of the car. But you can’t argue with a small tank and decent range for when you actually want to go somewhere in a very special car.

You should try an SF90 before you describe it as "fading into obscurity"! I know it's popular to bash it but it's an astonishing thing, especially in AF guise. Drives so differently to the 296 GTB (which I agree is a wonderful car). The offer is there to drive my SF90 - and I'd wager you'd revise your view (and perhaps revert to your opinion of three years ago in your desktop video review that it was "the most exciting thing to come out of Marenello for a long time").
@neilturner6749 Жыл бұрын
The SF90 has indeed almost faded into obscurity even whilst still a young-ish model - Ferrari’s own lack of marketing enthusiasm for it combined with poor residual values confirms its lack of “wow-factor” desirability (for a mid-engined Ferrari, anyway). You’re defending it because you’ve got one and obviously love it, and hence have simply taken the benign phrase “fading into obscurity” as meaning the same as “it’s shit”, which clearly it doesn’t. Nor do most reviewers/owners in general think that the SF90 is crap, but there’s no denying that at present it’s a very much overlooked and half-forgotten model.
@stefaneinz Жыл бұрын
I would point out that in the US SF90s still trade at or above MRSP. In the U.K. residuals are weaker, but this was partly caused by too many ex-demo cars coming onto the market at the same time early in the car’s life; something that did not happen in the US (fact checked with Ferrari UK). That set the early market. And we need to define “obscurity”. If the definition is based on social media hype, sure I’d agree. But for owners and fans of the marque, a 1,000hp Ferrari with an evolution of the great Pista V8 turbo will never be obscure. Just my humble view!
@jeffreykilpatrick35922 күн бұрын
Sf90 is too large a car and despite being larger there is no frunk at all. No place to put any luggage? Wife will never go in an sc90 with only her clothes on. Also the window for the engine looks silly and desperate to have an engine window - and the engine is really boring looking.

But it has other qualities as I discovered when lapping the car around the Nurburgring last summer - so extraordinarily exciting to drive, it's the first car in which I've achieved 200mph down the Dottinge Hohe! (991 GT2RS managed 199!). I will disagree on the engine though - it looks sensational to my eyes, tucked so low in the chassis.

@ the engine view shows almost nothing - why bother with the tiny window? And not having a storage area for some amount of luggage or at least a tire pump and your jacket is just stupid. How many owners are going out on the Nurburgring and how often even if they live in Germany? Sports cars are impractical but the sf90 is unusable as an actual street car and cannot even be used for a weekend trip. I know the 1,000 hp number makes certain body parts appear larger - but really? And it is not even a nice looking external design- I will stay with my blue corsa 296 GTB- a practical car and too fast and sounds better and has a larger engine window and a more interesting engine visually and looks like a timeless exterior design - fantastic visibility which is not the case with the sf90.

PLEASE stop spreading the lie that Enzo only liked 12cyl. In the 50's, Ferrari ran 4,6,8 & 12cyl engines in their race cars. Dino, Enzo's son was named after Enzo's Father & older Brother so it's most unlikely he saw the Dino brand as "less than". Jason Camissa has a Revelations episode on the Dino's where he goes into further detail, it's WELL worth watching!

So the lexan glass above the engine bay is nearly 3k what’s the weight saving on that one piece over standard glass? May be worth losing the 1kg from your own waistline. Saving 3k for the respray that’s clearly required on that car 😂😂

Actually the logic with making a 120 degree V6 is the same as making a 60 degree V12. It’s the only configuration for a V6 that’s perfectly balanced. Making 60 degree V6’s has always been about packaging, but it’s never been the ideal format, it’s basically the second best option. Making 120 degree V6’s is akin to making an Inline 6’s but without the length issue for longitudinally mounting the engine in the middle. Side note, a 120 degree V6 also keeps the center of gravity nice and low

Ferrari must have been drinking the bong water when they added the blue color.

Love it but I think it's a shame modern Ferraris are so wide.

Ummm, yes, probably everything after the 328 is wide AF.

Its definitely smaller. I fit easily in a 488 but my shins hit the lower dash in a 296. 😢

Why did they get rid of the rear round lights? Trip to Pininfarina to change the rear and front along with making it sound better me thinks.

As usual great review, James. Inexplicably bad colour combo aside a very desirable package. Premium bond - where is thy win…?

A capacitive starting button. It's unbelievable the most mythic and heritage brand could allow it to be produced

With a very unlikely substantial lottery win, that car would not be a car i would even consider. So much else out there more interesting, more personality, better investment or just plain fun to drive.

Am I imagining things OR does this sound a wee bit like the V12 in the purosangue 🤨🧐🧐🤨

I’ve never heard anyone say you must have Weissach to sell your GT3. Clubsport is perhaps a preferred option for some but Weissach is far more rare.

I do have to say - the overtones and musicality of that intake and exhaust of that six make it sound like a twelve. For that I say, bravo!

Was at back of Wilmslow Ferrari once again. After one’s Mothering Sunday meal with 7 year old. All the later cars. The FF did look older. But. The Purosange in triple white looked the best. Strangely. Well the 812 looked well too. None of them blew me away like a black 911 Turbo. Oddly.

Such a gorgeous car. Maybe the best looking Ferrari right now (without strange accent colors on the hood)

That story about Enzo refusing to call a V6 car a Ferrari is complete bunk. Jason Cammisa covered this well; Enzo named the Dino after his beloved, dead son, Alfredino.

120 degrees is actually the ideal bank angle for a V6. 120x6=720 (over a 4 stroke combustion cycle). So it was perfect secondary balance but has primary imbalance unlike an engine with an even number of cylinders per V. I think primary balance has something to do with differing piston speeds.
@john17035 ай бұрын
Perfect primary and secondary balance for a six, is a straight 6 (eg Jaguar XK).

I tried it on track. It is an explosion of power contained by clever electronics. This is needed to keep new owners alive.
