The Gen 1 is a bonafide future classic. I opted for the V10 with the gated manual. As good as the V8 is, the extra power and glorious roar from the V10 just elevate it to another level. As far as the brakes, its an easy remedy. Upgrade to Motul RBF600, braided steel lines, and a more aggressive pad do wonders in brake feel and performance. The stock brakes are a glaring weak point on the track, so these upgrades are a must. What I love about the Gen 1 R8 so much was it was engineered and made its debut during a golden era where there was a perfect blend of organic analog + just enough technology of the digital age. Who doesn't love hydraulic steering, a proper manual handbrake, and manual gearbox mated to a high revving atmospheric V8/V10! A sprinkle of the new tech(optional CCBs, magnetic ride suspension, first of its kind LED eyebrows DRLs) made it a perfect combo. I won't ever sell mine so long as they sell petrol or biofuel to keep it running!
@procatprocat9647 Жыл бұрын
Surely aggressive pads and braided lines make the brake problem worse? Harry complained about sharp brakes. To solve that you'd want harder wearing, lower grip pads.

In retrospect, this was a really nice era of design. Modern, but not chaotic like new cars now. The line/crease coming off the headlight defines the waistline, then runs continuously down and around the rear fascia. Super tidy, clever and clean. Just enough adornment and no more. People don't do that sort of thing anymore. The lines get broken up and pointed in random directions. This is so much more satisfying to look at than aimless aggression.
@kalcha4099 Жыл бұрын
Agree, it's got very clean lines throughout with enough gentle curves and shape to result in a very ageless, elegant design. Most modern cars are either too brutal, angular or bulging. The R8 got the balance perfect.

You hit some key points Harry, notably you actually see very few on the road v Porsche, even in Germany. I ordered back in 2007 but cancelled as dealer was drunk at the specn meeting (Audi Gmbh werent impressed). Got perfect spec in 2014 and it makes me smile on every outing. It is a race car, I fitted KV suspension when the magride failed exactly at 49k miles as predicted and now it rides properly and during the work, was well impresed with the beautiful spaceframe chassis and alloy suspension components and engineering. It goes through fast bends on rails, makes my 20v UR Quattro feel is age, poor girl. Interior quality makes McLaren a joke, as well as storage. The sideblade is a clever visual trick as in body colour, which mine came in, makes the rear look long but with silver side blade, which I fitted a NOS set, tightens it all up. For me, after the twin turbo V8 in the 2003 RS6, engine was a disappointment ie no low down torque or thunder of the RS6, needs revs which is hard work. Car is also quite colour subjective, dark colours dont show off the lines so well IMO ie red, launch metallic steel blue and the metallic grey looked fantastic. I also wish they had fitted the twin oval tailpipes from the V10 instead of the 4x outlets on the V8. The MMI is of its time so the sat nav is dreadful. Just hope you can test an original RS4 V6 now Harry, assuming Audi can find a good one...

every winter, my R8 goes into storage, and I say to myself, I will sell it in the spring. This is my fourth year of ownership and I’ve decided after spending quite a bit of money this year on maintenance that I think I will keep her indefinitely. I am lucky enough to have one or two other cars in my garage, but R8 arguably puts more of a smile on my face, then the others. I love the way it looks, and it drives superbly for UK country roads. Controlling for massively rising used car prices, my call in 2019 that both the V8 and V10's would massively appreciate in value, was absolutely spot on. Particularly manual V10's which I said would LEAP in value. Then in 2021 after they'd appreciated (a lot BTW - 20% year on year) I said they'd still keep appreciating, and that a V10 was still a massive money maker... I was proved totally correct. Everyone I know who bought one in the years I'd been saying it has thanked me. It was basically a brilliant investment no matter how many miles you put on it. A friend of mine genuinely made 18k after putting 13 thousand miles on his! Hard driving too. Also never once had a single problem at the garage. Not one. Very cheap to run he says. Sold it for much more than he bought it for and ended up buying his dream car (a 911) for "free" on the back of it. Good lad, he lent me it for a couple of weeks when he was on holiday and I was so impressed with it. I've made some good calls on cars in my time, and some bad ones (sold a to be fair knackered R32 for peanuts just before they shot into orbit and I lost out on a huge profit), but the R8 was easily my best call to this day. A guy I worked with bought one with a gearbox issue for 42k, spent 3k fixing the gearbox, another thousand making it perfect on cosmetics, and sold it for over 60! Imagine... He bought a lovely Quatraporte and still has it now. Do I have advice now? Nope. Sorry. Best I can do is say that I've gone for a mk2 cosmetically knackered MR2. Reckon it'll do OK but we're at the apex imo.

I had gone to the dealer to order a new one and after sitting in the showroom example I left feeling unexcited. Two weeks later I went to the Audi dealer who had an R8 in stock. I was struck by its presence immediately. I thought for a couple days about coupe or convertible - my last three 911's were cabrios. I ended up ordering a coupe because the look was so exquisite and I loved the view of the engine through the rear glass - the convertible would not have that. It took 6 months for her to arrive. I've been deeply in love ever since. Now have almost 30k miles and every time I drive it's like a little vacation. I can't imagine living without Felicity and it's been 8 years.

I have owned a number of 911s over the years and also a R8 V8 and the car that I most regret selling is the R8. Mine was in this colour combination and was absolutely terrific. It really did square up to and beat the 997 back then! A great review Harry (as always) and a nice little trip down memory lane too! Thank you.

Such a terrific car. It can't be repeated, so well balanced, sporty and yet, civilized, with remarkable quality.

I remember the first time seeing an R8 being tested out in the desert in North Las Vegas and thinking, “what the heck is that beauty?!” I still love the 1st Gen V8.

Always loved the R8, the way it looked, sounded and went. Having owned a Mk2 TT for a good few years now, its pretty funny to see how much of the interior, especially, was shared with the TT. The steering wheel, seats, the knurled controls for the heating, handbrake, the central display, the door mirrors etc. Would love to try an R8 at some stage, but it would have to be a manual.

That beautiful sounding V8, an open gated manual and no engine position far in front of the front axle. Best recipe Audi ever conconcted, well besides the R8 V10 with the gated manual.

I love that the V8 has quad pipes. It just seems proper to me, I wish the newer models had quad pipes.

I just traded in my 2016 F82 M4 Comp tuned to 600whp for a 2011 Audi R8 V8 manual, and my what a difference in cars they are. My M4 had so much power that it was not fun to use on the streets, losing traction in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear. It was a car where the power can only be put down above 70kmh which is already exceeding the speed limit. When driving the R8, I can actually wring the car out and redline 1st / 2nd gear without breaking the law. Plus the sound of the gated shifter and the sound of the V8 with an aftermarket exhaust is to die for. And let’s not forget how amazing it looks! Sure the V8 version is not the fastest car on the road, but believe me it is fast enough. If you’re in the market for a 2nd hand entry level supercar, the V8 R8 is a bargain.

This car is Absolutely FANTASTIC! I agree with everything you say. It has great driving sensations, gives me much more sensations than a ¨Porsche (but this is very personal indeed). The cockpit, the sound, the handling, the looks... it just doesn't age..

I've just bought one of these, gen 1 v8 manual '09. I live round the corner from you and drive all the same roads you were on and it's truly spectacular. Has been a childhood dream of mine since it came out in 2007! Great review and I agree with it all. The bumps on the road between Charlbury and Burford will get you though if you're not careful!

Enjoyed this trip down memory lane with what still feels like a ‘recent’ car, I remember Clarkson’s reaction to this car well. German design ages so much more elegantly than Italian… What Harry omits to mention during his pre-amble is that there were plenty of ‘sporty’ Audis prior to the R8 (RS2, Coupe S2) etc but they were always marked down in road tests for their dull steering/chassis dynamics and never managed to capture the magic of the original ur-Quattro. R8 changed that overnight and there haven’t been as many dull Audis since…

Another great review. I remember when we first saw the TT and thought “they won’t build that..” and they did, then we saw the R8… and they built that too! And this time it had THAT engine 😀 they have their own distinctive sound too, almost has that unbalanced 5 cylinder Quattro sound.. only better😀

A unique beauty and the first to bridge the gap between hot hatch/saloon to the ‘Supercar’ and an achievable dream. I know two grafters who own R8’s but not one Lambo/Ferrari owner.

R8s tend to be overlooked a lot of the time and especially the V8. If the R8 gets a mention at all it's usually the V10 but I guess that's why the V8s are such good value for money at the moment.

I find it funny that you call the front storage space the 'boot'. I drive mid engined but still call the front the 'bonnet'. At least neither of us say 'trunk'! Still enjoy your content after all these years. Keep up the good work!

I’m sure the designers feel very proud whenever they look at one. If not then someone should tell them they definitely should be.

Great shape, that has aged so gracefully. The over-servoed brakes are common to pretty much every car that VAG has built in the last 25 years. For whatever reason, they always get this hopelessly wrong. You would’ve thought they would have addressed it in a car that they otherwise absolutely nailed.
