Out of all the smaller KZbin reviewers, the off-road reviews remain the most consistent among all the vehicles tested.

I love that 80 locked in system, yesterday I got stuck in my 2021 gmc elevation x31, system locked in and it perfectly got out without hesitation, thank you GM for making that system

I much prefer a selectable locker to the G80, but the G80 certainly has its strengths.
@exordis8 ай бұрын
Looks like the Nissan Titan may have been smoother on the uphill? Possibly with a better dialed in BLD. At least before the G80 locked.
@EngineAdventures7 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting! GM needs a selectable rear locker option, they rely heavily on the G80, so their brake based limited slip isn't great. The newer ZR2s and AT4Xs seem to have better brake limited slips systems though. Nissan's ABLS is excellent and the selectable rear locker is better than the G80 for off pavement driving.

Great video and thanks for sharing and pointing out how to properly use the settings for off-roading. Only question I had was, when do you use 4 High, and when using the hill assist, do you need to put it in P, N, or just have it on D but with the foot on the brake? Much appreciated!
@EngineAdventures8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the support! If you're talking hill start assist, just leave it in drive and the truck will automatically hold the brakes until you're on the throttle enough to start climbing. I normally don't use that as I drive with both feet when off pavement.

I still don’t know how I feel about the g80. I’ve owned a trail boss and I’ve owned other brands with electronic lockers. I tend to like the option to lock it beforehand but I can see where the “automatic” nature of the g80 would work for most people
@EngineAdventures2 жыл бұрын
One of my coworkers really likes the g80, especially for when his wife drives his truck. He also wants a front selectable locker, so kind of the best of both worlds.

I was actually doing some research about my Eaton G80 today. Now mine's an 05 sierra, so grain of salt. It's supposed to engage only when there's a difference between the left and right rear wheels of more than 100rpm. Then, when the vehicle reaches about 20mph, it disengages. So it seems to me to really only be meant for getting moving on slippery surfaces on or off a hill. For true, serious off roading, I think a manual locker would be best.
@davidporter7051 Жыл бұрын
@@2AMech not really, it just takes a lot more practice using a G80.
@EngineAdventures Жыл бұрын
I like the G80, but a selectable locker is on another level for offroading. The G80 won't engage above certain speeds, requires wheel spin to engage, and can disengage at inopportune times. It's great for an auto locker in bad weather or gravel roads, especially when towing.

Use the hill assist going down the hill if you want slower than 5mph
@EngineAdventures Жыл бұрын
Yup, the point here is to test how low the gearing is. Hill assist works really well from pretty much every brand I've tested. I still prefer using gearing in most cases.

Really great review! I’m curious what drive mode you would use if traveling on gravel roads 50 mph+? I’m never sure if I should use AWD or 4wdHi. Thanks!
@EngineAdventures Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the support! At those speeds either 4wd hi or AWD will work. If you're on pretty rough gravel roads then maybe use 4wd hi, otherwise I'd just use 4 auto.

Do you think theres a difference in off road performance with the other engine choices?
@EngineAdventures2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but it certainly depends on what you're doing. I'd take the 6.2 for high speed sand driving. The wider RPM range and quicker throttle response would be helpful there. I enjoy the diesel quite a bit, and with it's small size it doesn't add much weight. However, I'd personally had plenty of problems with modern diesel emissions systems and would rather have reliability over efficiency in many cases. I don't think you could really go wrong with either of these options.

what are the best cars for mountain road trips?
@EngineAdventures2 жыл бұрын
There are plenty, depends on what size you want, SUV or truck, etc. At the mild end a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk is very capable for it's size while still getting decent fuel mileage. At the extreme end a Ram TRX or Ford Raptor can handle running through the desert at high speeds without issues. If you need bigger, a Ford Super Duty Tremor or a Ram Power Wagon are your options. If you need smaller, a Colorado ZR2 or Tacoma TRD Pro would both be great. For SUVs, most jeeps (Wrangler, Grand Cherokee to Wagoneer etc. that have a low range transfer case will get you where you want to go, also the 4-Runner, Sequoia, Lexus GX, Bronco, Tahoe, and Expedition can all be had with pretty good off pavement capability.

@@EngineAdventures I live in Brazil, so my options are a bit limited. I test drove a Ford bronco sport badlands and i ford edge st. I really liked the ride on the bronco Sport but i don't like spending my money on a 4 cilynder. I really liked the edge ST but i don't know if i could live with those 21 inch rims. What if i get the Edge ST and put some 19 or 20 inch rims? Do you like that idea?
@EngineAdventures2 жыл бұрын
@496 527 interesting, you can't get the edge with smaller wheels? I'd imagine you could probably go as low as 18" on the wheels without having clearance issues with the brakes. Edit: I didn't realize it was Edge ST. Makes sense now. The brakes may be a little larger on the ST vs regular, I honestly don't know that much about them.

One back tire spinning, which means the G80 begins its countdown to launch… To its credit though, when it does lock, it looks like a rhino has rammed the bed as it lurches sideways and forward. 😂

The G80 is always fun that way. Never had one explode on me and I don't personally know anyone who has, but it's still a little scary when it locks!

Idk about calling it an AT4 and they give you 3.23 axle ratio.

Even the new Silverado ZR2 has a 3.23 axle ratio. The 10 speed helps, but I agree a 3.73 or 4.10 would be better.

It's hard to show how steep it is in a really clear manner. The grade on this hill is 40%+. I used to test the vehicles in 2wd and the couldn't move forward at all, even when not in the holes or ruts.
