I recon I’ve got a rare GOLDEN 3rd gen Tacoma because I have zero problems towing based on the max tow capacity of my truck.😳 My only complaint with the 2GR-FKS V6 engine is the bad gas mileage with that power plant. I’m assuming, based on all the data and reviews, that the fourth gen engine “ain’t” any better with the overall MPG.🤷♂️🤔

I tow light (4000 lbs) camper with my 3rd gen. For towing only my view of the differences of the 4th gen vs 3rd: Transmission: big improvement. Differential gearing: significant improvement Suspension: Wash, although I prefer leaf Technology: slight improvement by additional tech Power: Significant improvement. Regarding WHERE the power hits: Huge improvement Reliability: To be determined, but can't be better. Payload: no change I'm considering a better midsized truck, and towing is a necessity. Full size is a no go. The biggest weakness, imo, for the Tacoma is payload. Rhe 2nd biggest is Transmission/gearing. Power is the least important area that needed to be addressed. I think the Tacoma is a bad choice for most people who tow. After you add tongue weight and two medium sized passengers, most folks have fully exhausted their payload capacity, and no modifications can fix that. Other choices will be as bad as the Tacoma, but I'm really down to two candidates: Ford Ranger and the GM variants.

@EngineAdventures6 күн бұрын
It's been long enough that I don't remember if I tested that of camera, but I did learn that sport mode often performs better for vehicles without as much torque. The added throttle sensitivity makes the engine rev higher and faster, which allows it to get more torque to the wheels.

Never thought society would have lowered our expectations for a 4x4 SUV down to this. It better be an absolute dream on the road to warrant such ineptitude when it comes to articulation. Only caveat being the 1st gen sequoia was limited when stock. But it can open up a ton with longer travel rear shocks alone.
@zanetaylor78 күн бұрын
I drive a 100 series. And it’s crazy how capable they are out of the box. And it’s crazy how so many people will spend so much money on mods for an expensive new car just have a do it all solution they use off-road 2% of the time. They could buy a soulful stock 100 series to do the exact same trail more comfortably for the price of the *mods* that they have installed on a depreciating asset (only to cause premature wear). Guess I’m just poor lol.

The Land Cruiser is in a bit of a unique class, it's smaller than the Tahoe and designed for a different use case. The Tahoe has a way more functional interior, making it much better for family use. In this case, the magnetic shocks are excellent for in road use, which really help it drive better than any land cruiser in pavement. Off Pavement the land cruiser will go much longer without ever developing cracks and rattles, it will have more articulation for better traction, and most of all it will generally have fewer mechanical issues (since Chevy's are stupid reliable for some reason, but the Land Cruiser is more consistently reliable). The US market use case for this vehicle (with a little rounding) is 100% mileage spent on paved or well maintained dirt/gravel roads.

The Wrangler is the best vehicle on sale today for slow speed crazy crawling. It makes a lot of sacrifices in basically every other area. Yes, you can make it do high speed stuff, but other vehicles are better for that. The ZR2 is a good all around vehicle. I really need to test the newest generation of it, but the new trailboss was great.

No, it was doing that over large bumps on the street as well. I think it had a loose bolt in the suspension, but I couldn't find it. When it's on the ground I'm guessing it's under tension so it holds tight, but when the suspension is unloaded it frees up and rattles a bit.

I’m not going to knock either one of them. I’ve been buying Chevy pickups since I was a kid so for over 40 years.. I always kept my trucks running good and none of them have ever given me a problem. But they just don’t make them the way they used to and for that I am saying goodbye to Chevy.. Now I’m trying to figure out do I want a 2025 frontier pro X or a Tacoma Trd pro . Huge price difference I don’t plan on doing major off-road, but some light stuff like this. What do you recommend?
@EngineAdventures14 күн бұрын
@@american_chevy616 while I didn't like the 3rd Gen Tacoma, the 4th Gen is much better to drive. Either truck will do great with this. In my opinion, the Nissan will be easier to work on and probably more reliable. The Tacoma has the 4-cylinder turbo, which is still fairly new. They may have the problems worked out, but they may not. The 4th gen Tacoma tows and drives better than the Frontier on-road now. I haven't tested the 4th gen Tacoma TRD Pro, but I would say that getting the TRD Off Road would get you the off-road capability you want at $20k less than the TRD pro. The Frontier Pro 4x will be about the same price as the TRD Off-Road. I also really like how the new Colorado drives with its turbo 4 cylinder. That one has actually been on the market for a while and I believe will have less issues than the Tacoma's Turbo 4, at least for now.

It's actually quite good for what it is. When I get a rental car, if a Blazer is available I usually grab that or a Mazda CX something, as they have better on road driving dynamics than most other vehicles available at the rental car lots. Off Pavement it's no K5 but still did better than most crossovers. The dual clutch rear end performs quite well.

With a better tire you would have won. The tires are what made you slide to the sides
@EngineAdventures16 күн бұрын
Yes and no. Having the right tires for the terrain is extremely important. However a BMW X6 on summer tires made the hard line of the steep hill climb with only a medium amount of effort. What I'm looking for is that the traction devices (lockers, limited slip diffs, and/or brake based limited slip) can get enough torque to the wheels with traction without having to apply so much brake force to the wheels without traction that the engine can't overcome it. Parts of this test are quite extreme for most crossovers, but it does give me some clues to how they would perform on snow or ice covered roads because I can see and feel how well the traction systems work.

@EngineAdventuresАй бұрын
These are quite capable, but with the Gladiator things you won't have to worry about will take a lot more attention in the GC, and things that are challenging for the Gladiator will be a serious workout for the GC. On the other hand the GC is much better on pavement, smoother, quieter, faster, more comfortable, and in my opinion, better for all weather conditions on pavement.

I love the Chrysler minivans too. I have owed two but wished they had kept that boxy, suv looking, upright and higher riding position like the previous Town & Country had. A shape similar to the present Kia Carnival I believe would satisfy buyers who are more drawn to SUVs because of their high riding position.

I'm pretty aware of what's going on and having tested over 100 vehicles here I haven't done any mechanical damage to one. You are correct that turning while climbing isn't ideal. With lower clearance vehicles there isn't really any other option for this specific test, and I like this test because it shows how the AWad system transfers power to the wheels with traction and how capable that system is.

Nice review and nice truck. I wish they would scrap the G80 though. The price is on par with the trucks with selectable locking diffs. Climbing up your hill should be 4 low, diff locked and whatever electronic aid you have at your disposal and air down if possible. The reason the frontier is so good comes down to crawl ratio and wheelbase. It’s a tough choice these days, so many cool trucks and other vehicles. Bring your check book. Great review as always. Always check here before you buy. 👍EA

Next time try with the traction control - OFF ...omg ....
@EngineAdventuresАй бұрын
It's been so long I don't remember if I did this or not. However, many manufacturers will disable the brake based limited slip when traction control is disabled. That means once a wheel is in the air it spins freely and all the power goes to that wheel. Essentially it performs worse with traction control off than with it on.
