James Mill divided British-Indian history into Hindu, Muslim, and British, which he has mentioned in his three-volume book on the history of British India. There were several problems with the periodization offered by him: 1) The periodization was based on religion. However, several other faiths existed simultaneously. 2) According to James Mill the British rule represented all the forces of progress while the period before British rule in India was one of darkness, ignorance, despotic, etc. 3) The periodization was more emphasized on the rulers and no importance was given to the people. 4) All rulers did not share the same faith.
