Over 30,000 km on my 2020 ATASes. Drive forestry roads in Rockies, multi week camp/hotel off it, and run Mitas E07s throughout my BC. Traction is key! Love the DCT, and I'm a life time dirt rider. Just finished 7200 km Western US trip, without one hiccup. We buy Honda for reliability, and access to so many dealerships across Canada and US ( even though we rarely need them). This bikes suspension is comfortable in all terrains wirh es button settings, on the fly! Absolutely makes my day! My buds and I have had and still have many toys. But we all say if we lost our "twin", we'd go and get another the next day. Im 6'2, 205, mid fifties, and I fully endorse this product, lol.

I've got the predecessor to the 1100, the 1000 Adventure Sports, taller than the 1100, mines at 900mm seat height. It was an upgrade to my first bike, the Honda Transalp 700. I love mine, great range, comfortable for the most part. Always on road. Brill at touring, fitted the Givi racks for soft panniers.

Hey Kate, I find it a pretty well balanced bike, but it is tall at front, which makes pushing it around a little cumbersome, and I guess that's the difference (other than the engine layout) to the GS. I saw one at my local BMW dealer parked next to a 1250 GS and having previously thought the GS was the bigger bike, this made the Beemer (non adventure) look small. You're right just comparing kerb weights means very little in reality. I must say I'm a big fan of the AT, I find it fits me really well, and I love the exhaust note! Ride Safe

I thought the same of the T7 and toureg 660 I don't really get why the front is so high up and the seat isn't that high really. You can have ground clearance and suspension travel without it being so high at the front.

I have had the adv sport for 7 months, and the left hand switch gear is a comman gripe. I've got around it eventually. 1st adjust handle bars, turn the button cluster (control) and move it from vertical to aprox 30 to 45 degrees and I also put on 25mm handle bar risers. It's fine now. You can imagine two big fat hands trying to use the indicators compared to yours hands especially with winter gloves. You did not mention buffeting which was a bad surprise but again easily fixed, pyramid fork cover £30 and a little puig deflector screen about £80 and Honda oem additional deflectors for side of fairing approx £120. Now I've the near perfect bike. And a side stand extender is an absolute must.

Hi Kate, I own an Africa Twin 1100 adventure sports 2023 with DCT gearbox. I think this solution is very spot on, the driving pleasure is extremely extraordinary, I never thought that this technology applied to motorcycles was so successful. Personally I recommend the DCT… is another world!!! Ciao from Italy 👋

Totally different world but I find my Honda CBF125 has a snatchy throttle. It’s quite hard to smoothly apply throttle when going low speed. Might just be a characteristic of the bike. Really enjoyed this video. You seem to be coming out of your shell too. Perhaps I’ve picked up on it more but you seem more confident and personable in front of the camera. Top work all round, Kate!

I owned the dct version of this bike and even as a 19 stone, 6ft 2 Rugby player I still found it top heavy and hard to get along with. In the end I swapped for a new Aprilia V4 Tuono Factory which is a lot different but an epic bike which I also tour on. It is the best looking adventure bike though IMO. Forget the Apple CarPlay though as it is pants on the AT. Tank range was amazing though. Easily over 300 miles.

Test rode the same model as your review last year,. Compared to my 2016 GS one big difference is it's ability to turn in tight spots with massive steering lock and gearbox is sweat compared to the GS spanners and cogs sound track. Love it, a joy through the corners despite 21" front, just doesn't have that GS "get up and go" at the top end for fast sweeping A-roads. But still feel very tempted to switch!

At 18 mins you nodded to a bike who returned it. I was about to emigrate, when I got on a VFR750 FG Model early one. The number of nods I got cancelled me going abroad. What a fantastic World it is in the UK ( not at all times) really makes it worthwhile to ride a bike. You can stop have a convo with another biker and feel like you've known them for years, total strangers make it all fantastic in this country. One positive out of very many minuses right now !! Biking is beautiful, Ride safe :) That Africa Twin looks gorgeous. I have a CBR1100XXX and love it to bits :)

Great review, Kate. I have the ATAS Es manual plus model. The plus has all the panniers, dry bag's air deflectors centrestand and came with the stealth gratis with 3 free services. I recommend the electronic suspension change the settings at the touch of the screen. Perfect for commuting, scratching around and full on 2 up touring, takes it all in its stride. Was an improvement on my tracer 900gt, which wasn't perfect 2 up. The controls become intuitive v soon. I've not noticed the throttle snatchyness. I think reducing the engine braking may help. Maybe try customising the user settings. Can't wait for your cotswolds tour. My ATAS loves the winding roads of the elan valley and cruise gently it will return over 60mpg and around 350 miles from a tank. Pin it, and you will still get over 50mpg. It rides like 2 different bikes v agricultural chugging along and has a real growl when you get a shuffle on.

I have a NT 1100 and you are right with the throttle, after reducing the engine brake it does get better though, only problem is, Honda do the graphics in such a way that you don´t actually know whether you are reducing it or not - the graphics are sometimes a little bit confusing, for example when you have the least power, all three blue parts of the circle are lit up. I do love my NT though and wouldn´t change it, except maybe for a Africa Twin, but that doesn´t make sense ihere in Germany, they shoot you here if you go offroad. I enjoy watching your videos and I could listen to your voice all day. Have fun and ride safe.

I had the old AT DCT model, put 20k miles on it and was a great bike, being a latrge 6ft1 individual didn’t find it any heavier than the 1000 vstrom, triumph tiger, do admit my current GS feels lighter to move around probably due to the low centre of gravity of the boxer engine. The over complicated tft screen and switch gear on the new AT would put me off, my old AT DCT had more than enough buttons to confuse me lol, that one your on I would never use half the modes it comes with, guess that’s just the way bikes are going these days. Great video look forward to the group test 👍👌

There is a fitting charge for the Datatool tracker of £99 but it is worth having. I also find the automatic cancelation of the turn signals is really poor they turn off at the wrong times or not at all. The speedometer also reads around 6mph faster than you are travelling @ 70mph. Throttle is twitchy and the usb connection to android phones is basically useless very temperamental with various cables its trial and error to get a cable that works without issues. windshield is great at full height I'm 5"9 and can ride easily with the visor up.

Great video description of the SFRICA twin. I have the L model. DCT. I live it. Pretty much the same. Just a smaller tank. Some accessories less. Like crash bars bash plate and cornering lights. But I’ve got after market for that. You should try the DCT. The throttle response as you say is on and off. Crapped myself a couple of times, when my gloves have caught the throttle 😂 Tour mode outs out the lost power. And yes you can set it to your own in user modes. It’s like you say. You learn the cluster the more you ride. It is excellent. I have the DCT because of a leg injury So I can’t change gears anymore. But yes the DCT is something else.. Great video.. oh and that road is also one of my favourites..

I own the 2019 atas dct and I love it. It doesn't have the snatchy throttle response but I heard about it in the newer versions. I think its alleged to be because of ncap insisting that when you roll off the throttle the fuel must stop and can be only cured by mapping it out but I could be wrong.

specs doesn't look at that flash because they tuned it for low down torque across a fairly wide rev band And im so happy about it. Hate that you have to rev a bike like a chainsaw to get all the power. Just not my style of riding. Love how it just chugs along effortlessly. My biggest gripe with the bike..and this is nitpicking...is that the switch gear is not backlit...just how is this a thing in 2023?

Hi Kate! Just found your channel, and followed you. Great words about the Africa Twin! I have not tried the Adventure Sports model yet, mine is at the dealer waiting for the snow to go away here in west central Canada so I can ride it home. Mine is also a manual transmission with electronic suspension. I did get a good test ride in late last fall on a "22" standard Africa Twin manual transmission though and loved the bike and I took it on gravel road and deliberately put it into loose gravel to see what it did and to my pleasure it just did not care one bit. Like you'd said it was like it was on rails. I did not have any issue with its throttle response that I noticed. Personally I feel that the side stand is a little on the short side also, they do lean quite far over when on the stand, I will be modifying the foot plate on mine a bit when I get it home to make it a little longer so it lessens the lean some. I just think it puts a bit of unnecessary load onto it, also makes it a bit more weight to stand it up when you get on. Not that I had a difficult time with it, I am 5'9" and I have a 32 inch inseam. I ride gravel road here daily and love the 21' front wheel and I don't find it hinders highway handling really at all to speak of. Part of the reason I wanted and bought the Adventure Sports model was for the added features like larger fuel tank being near the top of that list, and heated grips and electronic suspension. Makes it easy to change when I load the bike up with gear or passenger or both. My idea of adventure riding is being away from civilization as much as I can get and having the added fuel capacity I love.

I'm not a fan of dual-sports bikes, due to the compromise of too heavy for off-road and not enough front-end-grip on-road. But one of my fantasy bikes is an Africa Twin with road biased wheels with 180/120 tyres. The Cotswolds tour sounds great, can't wait for that !!

I've just picked up a new one of these. My second AT. First one was the 1000 DCT, now on an 1100 manual. It is great with a quickshifter on it! I've not had a problem with on/off throttle, seems perfect to me. I've got it on power 2, engine brake 2. Note you can't get a manual version with electronic suspension. That is dropped from 2023. If you want ES you have to get DCT. I was looking at the GS and Tiger as possible options, but I just find the AT so much more fun to ride. Who needs more than 100bhp when you have great torque!

Had a standard DCT and the throttle was a bit on/off but now have an Adventure Sport DCT and it is much smoother. With regards settings, I have engine braking on least (3 bars) and I find that the best. Regarding power, it is not actually limiting the power but rather the throttle response so in lowest power (4 bars) and at lower revs you need to turn the throttle more for the same power as you would if you had it in highest power (1 bar). That setting may be the best to mitigate the on/off throttle response you are feeling, you could try setting a user mode with least power (4 bars) and see if it helps.

I think it does restrict the power and not just the throttle response. I own an AT and it definitely reduces power in modes such as off road and gravel. I’ve tried it on open road and you can feel the power pull is reduced at full throttle.

@@chrishall734 I replied a few mins ago but don't see it, could be because I included a link. Anyway if you do a search for Africa Twin 1100 review on Bennetts site you will see a graphic showing the power curves in relation to throttle position, it shows that at 100% opening there is virtually no difference but at lower throttle openings the differences are much greater.

@@HoodScotland don’t agree with that. I can definitely tell the difference. They did for a reason. Using full power off road would be dangerous. Even the manual states lower power

Looks like a good bike, but considering its 100hp engine, dont forget where these bikes are made for. Often used in things like Dakar Ralley or taken off road to be a useable off road adventure bike, so high horse power from a twin 1086cc isnt needed, its reliability will prove more useful than the HP and torque figures, also im guessing gear box will be made for it to have loads of low end grunt for off road.... gotta say Africa twin, Transalp and the Monkey 125cc bikes are my favourite 3 bikes from Honda. Would i swap my versys 650 for one? Nope, I like my versys 650 when it works and I love being told off by sports bike riders when they go "YOU CANT RIDE LIKE THAT, THATS NOT A SPORTS BIKE, STOP TAKING CORNERS FAST, HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE!?"... makes me feel warm inside knowing ive probably confused a bunch of people on my versys who ask silly questions like, "how?". If i did end up buying a different bike though to do off road touring, its either gonna be imported Kawasaki KLR 650 or V-Strom 650 for the tractor like engine power they seem to have where theyre light and dont stop.

Hi, i own an AT Adventure sports DCT, i am in love, the weight thing exists a vbit, yes it feels a bit heavy when stand still, get it moving? then it all kind of disappears magically, the size? a bit intimidating for a novice, even for an experienced, ur eyes need to get used to this high front end, but then, time and riding it fixes it all. honestly, with the DCT, u need to experience it well before u get real relaxed riding the bike on low speeds and maneuvers. if i regret it? NOT ONE BIT, does it fit a new or novice rider? NOPE, will u fall of it? yes on low speeds if not used to it, is it stable? more than enough for what the bike is designed for. do i sometimes think if i want to change it? maybe, just maybe, but then, just looking at it? that thought vanishes in a split second, i know it is subjective, to me? it is the best looking ADV bike out there, specially the tricolor one, speed? well, u want speed? go get a supersport bike, thats not meant for that, STILL it is faster than needed, BY FAR, well... thats my personal opinion as an owner of three in line, i had the 2018 1000cc, loved it, got the 2021, crashed it, in less than a month of owning it, was hit by an oncoming vehicle, got rid of it, and then got the 2022 Adventure sports and i am MADLY in love with it. excuse my long test :)

Have they scrapped the DCT on the standard model this year then? I have a 2020 standard DCT AT. I've had it a few months & I'm still a little iffy with it, but I'm taking the Dave Thorpe off-road course in a few weeks, where I'm hoping to get to grips with theirs in a fairly safe environment so I can handle the bike on my crappy potholed gravelly asphalt drive. I'm only a shortie in the legs, 32" inseam, so I find it hard to flat-foot even with the lower seat in the low position, but I think if you have your rear preload dialled in you should get a 30% sag when you get on, which should help somewhat. I dunno about you but I'm getting some good crash bars (Outback Motech) so that if I drop it it'll be OK.

Is the 30% sag on top of the static sag when the bike is supporting its own weight. Seems like you lose half the suspension once you have static sag and rider sag

Not long had a 2017 GS. I find the 850 seat height not as tall as the 825 on the tuono 1100 factory I had, I was tippy toes on that with a 31 inseam. I think I'd find the honda too top-heavy in comparison to a GS.

The throttle response is very much influenced by which riding mode the bike is in.. the feeling of the most power is found in tuoring mode.. I own a 2020 manual ATAS ES and am very happy with this bike.. As for fuel consumption, it is entirely possible to get up to 600km (372 miles) on a tank, but then you drive very calmly and with no funny accelerations, but as I said then you are driving hyper-economically.. and that I only tried once to know how far it goes a tank. The ES version also changes the dampers in the different driving modes. So glad you like the bike on this first impression ride.

Hi Kate Thank you for this video - very insightful! I’m planning to buy an Africa Twin but here’s my dilemma if I can get your expert advice please. My local Honda dealer is offering 4 grand on all the 2023 models. Are the new improvements in the 2024 models worth paying more or would you take the 4 grand and buy the 2023 model? The 2024 models haven’t been released in Australia yet. Thanks for always answering our questions.

I struggle to find a reason why 100bhp isn’t enough? My version is 94bhp CRF 1000L DCT it’s more than capable , top speed 130mph which you can’t use it’s not as big as the Adventure Sport or heavy and mine is also the October 2018 version so doesn’t have the complexity of the latest version and DCT is superb by comparison the Gs is a barge if you want to see what it’s capable of take a look at Brett Tkacs

I find you end up using the 2 user modes. The user modes improve the low throttle response. ditto with the indicators. you do get it after a while 🙂revelation
