A worthwhile evolution of an already excellent bike. I have a 2017 500X and it does everything pretty well and is incredibly frugal. If reliability and scenic riding is more important than absolute performance I don't think this bike will disappoint any prospective purchaser. Great review......and that green one looks tempting! Cheers.

After owning a 2016 CB500x for 2 seasons then selling and getting a cb1100 which was a fantastic bike but pretty damn heavy and then now a super fun and clean 2003 883 Harley Im looking at getting another 500x,, they are damn good on fuel, they ride nice and in my opinion , after owning at least 25 bikes over the years since 1983 I believ this Honda is the ultimate swiss army knife of bikes, plenty of power, reliability, easy handling, goes wherever you want and is incredible gas sipper too!

This is the Carlsberg of CB500X reviews, Tony. So much valuable info packed into so little time & such an interesting narrative - top job! Only things it needs are a fenda extender & a hugger, as it looks pretty mucky, plus whatever accessories you fancy - centre stand, USB port, heated grips etc. Even then it's still a bargain. @@mancavemoto good review.. BUT.. when did your test ride become a 4 cylinder.. special edition 🤔.. also 199kgs ISN'T not heavy.. its near enough as heavy as the T700 & half the power.. itchy boots has also "upgraded" to a .. cbf300.. whats that telling us.. the cb500x is just a rebadged cb500f that was a total failure.. Honda has missed the boat on this one.. even the Honda NT650 Bros v twin was markedly lighter @ 165kg with a LOT more power & a stronger frame.. a MUCH better candidate foundation than the cb500 TWIN
@mancavemoto2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, but 4 cylinder special edition ?!?, what are you on about? Noraly is riding a CRF300 Rally to be precise, and thats because she wanted a lighter bike. They still make the CB500F so this is a different layout on the same platform, not just a rebadge, and I think they’ve sold a hell of a lot of them.

@@mancavemoto forgiven.. your accent.. @ 2:10 "the same 471 engine" sounds like four cylinder one engine.. again at 10mins.. they are a sweet little engine but.. the bikes still way too heavy especially when makers of parallel twins say theyre easier to make lighter than V twins.. & Hondas own 90's eara VT650 Bros were 165kgs.. where's advancement gone with Honda.. cb500 hasn't been a seller down under either Aus or NZ nor US from reviews there.. didn't you find the muffler interfered with your heel standing riding off road? pegs could be forward just a little.

I was against having running indicators for the same fear you have. But I have since seen them on couple occasions in oncoming traffic (day and night) and they work wonders. It helps a lot with giving distance/speed perspective, too. Though it's even more important here in NA where all vehicles have orange corner lights at night so people are used to looking for white/orange, but a lot of bikes only have white lights here.

@@Thirsty_Fox Hi there. Australian here. I still find the North American standard of having orange lights permanently illuminated really strange. I live in Chile now, where there are a mix of vehicles from all over the world. The American cars still confuse me, I have to look for a bit longer because I can't tell if it's an indicator or a driving light. My preference is the Australian standard where orange lights are ONLY set to flash, never stay on permanently. Not saying it's better, just what I'm used to.

I would love a comparison between the Honda 500x vs the Honda 300 rally. I loved the look of the rally but for some reason Honda Sout Africa does not intend to import the 300 rally only the 300L which I did not like. As a predominantly comuter used with some low offroad use bike ( how much truely offroad do we use them on really) the tank capacity makes a difference. Really enjoyed your review of what is a very good bike however............................a few months ago I decided I was getting too old for large capacity large weight bikes and decided to "step down" to a smaller bike. I narrowed my choice down to the CB500X or the Benelli TRK 502. I test rode them both back to back and for me the easy winner was the TRK. Larger for more road presence and stability, more comfortable, engine has more character and the extras that come as standard are greatly appreciated such as handguards, radiator guard, crash bars, USB socket, backlit switchgear (with two extra blank switches to wire up accessories) and a rack. Add all that up and to spec up the Honda to match you would be ading a good £1000 at least to the £6300 for the Honda so £7300 compared to £5500 for the TRK. And before all you guys say "but its Chinese" you need to have a good look at them, the quality is excellent and they outsold the BMW GS this year in Italy. Dealer network is good in UK as they all also sell Royal Enfields, 2 year waranty. Remember back in the 70's when everyone said Japanese motorcycles where crap and not as good as British bikes, well look what happened there! I urge you to go try one and maybe even do a back to back video with the CB500X and TRK502.

Great review. Do you find much wind noise or buffeting from the screen? I’m leaning towards the F model as my current bike, RE Himalayan, was supplied with a very poor screen.
@mancavemoto2 жыл бұрын
Cheers, not much no. I was surprised how good it was. You’ll always get some buffeting, but I’ve ridden plenty of bikes that are much worse!

Excellent content Tony, I do have a question as to "How was the vibration in the handlebars?" Did you notice it was slightly there or was it something Honda could improve upon. I look forward to more of your content. Take care from Northern California Central Valley 😎

Thanks John, Theres a little buzz at high revs, but no more than you'd find in any other bike. I had no issues with it

I've had two people pull out on me because of the bloody indicators being lit all the time, I blacked off the drl nub on the indicators. Great review dude

Cheers Darren, I'm sure there must be a way to change then to standard style indicators?

Very good review, thank you! The only thing on all the newer bikes (in my mind) are the computerized screens for speedometer, etc. I have a feeling there are some lighting conditions that may make it hard to see the screens, as when you try to see a smart phone screen outside on a sunny day. I hope I am wrong about that, but I’m super leery of it. It is a nice bike
@mancavemoto2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, yes the backlit LCD screens like this can be a problem sometimes, but nearly all of the TFT screens i've seen have been good in lots of lighting conditions.

Cable throttle? Now i like that, my tiger 800 is a first generation with cable throttle and I'm much happier not having to deal with something electronic to break or some annoying feeling that's just not right. This little bike really sounds nice, planty for the money, but also simple enough without all the fussy electronics, especially all of those gauge modes and phone connection. And it's a Honda, so you know if cared for, it'll be a great choice to own.

The old models you got the vibes kicking in at like 65 mph .. I was wondering if you noticed much at 70 to 75 mph? ..... Nice demo and thoughts! 👍

not really, a bit of a buzz but nothing you wouldnt find on other bikes

That color scheme fits well on it, although it makes it look like a relative to the KLR bikes haha. I have the first gen Grey Versys x300, imo, the best looking one.

It kind of blends in with the countryside too

I love this bike, however it is beyond my reach since it is very expensive in my country. Due to tax, fee it costs almost around 9000usd which is insane jump from the original price.

Great review thanks. Only question I do have and you make some mention of it is what are the vibes like? Is it vibey through the rev range or just at certain spots or just buzzy rather that vibes? Cheers.
@mancavemoto2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, more buzzy at the top end than vibrations.

many people change to a 16T sprocket if it is for mostly highway commute to get rid of buzziness at high speed.

199 kg for a 471 cc. Great tank bag. I'd rather have a 390 Adventure. A lot lighter, although this is probably going to be more reliable in the long-term. With the forthcoming KTM Duke 490, I wonder whether they'll bring out a 490 Adventure. You'd think so. Interesting comment about the permanently on indicators. Good review, Tony, as ever.
@mancavemoto2 жыл бұрын
Yep, it could lighter, but it does feel a little more substantial than the KTM. A 490 Adventure would be great, I'm sure they will as the motor will be used across all platforms as per the 790 to 890 switch. Cheers
@JohannesDalenMC2 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure KTM has announced that they are coming out with a 490 adv bike?
@martyn_g2 жыл бұрын
Having had a 390, and if I would do that again, I’d rather have gone for a 500X. One, fuel range, and I’m pretty sure that the 500X also takes 91RON fuel, whereas the 390 took 95RON, the 390 was also quite vibey at 110km hour. As I don’t do an enormous amount of off road, the 500 is a better choice. Also, reliability. Hands down on any Honda for that.
@gavriel41372 жыл бұрын
I great review you mentioned doesn't have much vibration until you get on it, so do you feel it more at certain RPMs? And how is it when going over bumps or potholes?
@mancavemoto2 жыл бұрын
Cheers, there is a little buzz above 6000rpm, but thats all more of a buzz than a vibration. I try to avoid potholes 😉 but it soaks up sudden hits pretty well. It's not the most sophisticated set up, but it works nicely
@Wabbit19612 жыл бұрын
I'd almost classify this bike as a 2-cylinder super-moto, but with touring ergos... Honda managed 3 bikes in one. Doesn't have the gearing of a super-moto, but certainly approaches the styling with the 17" wheels and look.
