The rear sprocket safety ring acts like a bell that amplifies chain noise. This simple fix eliminates the annoying sound so the motorcycle sounds like it should.

You are a genius. I just installed the o-rings and I couldn’t believe… it really works. Thanks so much.

Bought a ‘22 Grom with 600 miles. Cleaned and lubed the chain but still had a ton of noise emitted from that rear sprocket area. I just want to say, this solution worked PERFECTLY for me! I see so many people in the forums with chain noise and wonder if they’ve seen your video. Thank you for sharing this MacGyver hack!

Right on Caleb. There is also an engine noise issue but this trick does help with Chain noise. Stoked it worked for you

Noticed the excessive chain noise on my recently purchased 2019 Monkey with 2k miles on it so I figured I’d adjust the chain since it was on the top side of slack range. Still had the noise so I thought I’d give this a try. We had some 7mm o-rings at work so I cut one, shortened it the 1/8th inch it needed to fit snug, super glued it and it eliminated virtually all the chain noise! Never had to remove the wheel. Literally a 5min fix for those of us who aren’t quite ready to go down the sprocket rabbit hole!

Awesome trick. I’ll make sure to order some O'rings too ! I have a '22 Monkey for exactly a year now. About 800 miles so far. I have this unpleasant sound that seems to come from the chain echoing off the buildings and passing cars. No I’m worried about the transmission issue !

This is not the answer to my problem, but it seems like a great idea to numb some of the other noises, I've noticed one of my pads is missing the thin metal plate to stop vibration so need to think of a fix for that but cheers for video 👍

The o-rings lasted but I got a better chain and sprocket set later and that was even better. Here is a link. I would go with this size. They will fit better: a.co/d/1dwBzvJ

In my case (2022 monkey) 127mm are too loose. Orings should sit tight on ihis safety ring right?
@andrewsiminoff9330 Жыл бұрын
They were tight on my Grom. A little loose on the Monkey but don’t move and still damped the sound.

@@andrewsiminoff9330 hmm propably bad quality oring. I left 3! Of them. One i cut a little and squeeze in this space under teeths. 4mm fits like OEM and do the silencing job perfect!! Thank Yoilu sir!

I appreciate your concern and effort but the noise a lot of people are having isn't the chain and it's not a dinging sound. It's a whine/whirring/grinding sound coming from the front of the bike. When mine first did it, I thought I caught a rock in my front caliper. That's what it sounds like. These do have noisy chains, too, though. I'll keep your video in mind. Thanks!
@andrewsiminoff93302 жыл бұрын
I understand there is another engine noise. Still this is a huge improvement in chain noise. It isn’t a bell sound but the bell transmits the chain noise. Putting the o-rings on, or as one person mentioned, a cross section of an old inner tube, the chain noise it reduced. It is a cheap and easy improvement. We have both a 2022 Grom and Monkey. I follow my fiancé and the difference is huge after adding the o-rings

Did you figure what causing the noise, I got the same noise after around 300km on the odometer. Just like you I thought there was a rock stuck in the front caliper creating this grinding noise, well I inspected the disc and pads, seemed normal to me. Maybe I should take the caliper off and see, but I'm not totally convinced it's the caliper causing the noise. The noise seems to amplify at higher speeds and gears. I did some researching and some people have reported loud whining from their transmissions, apparently that noise is caused by a faulty transmission. But like you mentioned, the sound is a grinding noise, excactly like the front disc is binding/grinding on something. But perhaps it is just a small rock stuck in the caliper that's causing the front disc to grind. IIRC, the noise goes away when I engage the front brake, but I'll need to do some more field testing. But precisely like you said, whirring/grinding noise from the front of the bike, off the lot of the dealership the noise wasn't there, only after a week of riding it started making the noise. Primary suspect is the front caliper, but I'm not that good of a mechanic that I'd feel comfortable taking off the caliper and bleeding the brakes. Anyhow kinda sucks either way, I've owned multiple motorcycles for years and I've never had an issue like this.

@@MrPiikkipallo For me, I was able to rule out the front caliper by shifting gears when it made the sound. It immediately went away like a switch turned it off when I started playing around with shifting gears. It's in the transmission. What I'm hearing in youtube comments and in some threads (and this is all rumor, not verified) is that there's a bearing in the transmission that goes bad and one comment even said when it goes it can cause the main bearing housing to slip. Total replacement or rebuild of the engine is the fix. Mine is at the dealership right now. I'm actually really disappointed in Honda. The Grom is a cheap-made bike and they charge damn near $4k for them. I can't believe they'd let something like a cheap bearing through the door like that. They need to recall these bikes but I doubt they will. They're junk, imo.

@@MrPiikkipallo I solved some chain noise. I have heard the other transmission noise and followed posts about it. I figure Honda will post a Tech Service Bulletin soon enough on that. I don’t have a solution for it.
@MrPiikkipallo2 жыл бұрын
@@shooter-vx7xy Okay, I'll have try shifting gears and see if the noise interrupts as well. Yeah disappointed as well, I paid 4.6k for my monkey and having issues like this within a week of riding? Cmon honda. I hope this just a faulty unit and not a design flaw.

Issue is, I can’t find a sprocket to replace it with that fits the 2022. I considered taking off the safety ring with a grinder. They may work but the o-rings or a price of inner tube as one person used really helps.
