Taylor an old trick I used to chase down a noise in engine was to use a long screw driver and use it like a stethoscope. By putting the metal end to the engine and put your ear to handle. You'll be surprised by how this will help track down a noise.

Did you adjust the valves correctly? Should turn engine over by hand,watch intake valve open / then close ....then line up top dead center mark on flywheel. Adjust both valves at this time. Also I haven't checked online but there should be away to adjust cam chain, unless it's totally automatic. Doesn't sound like rod knock to me. A good way to check for rod knock is to drive it and put a load on it. Like putting brake on while giving it a good amount of throttle,or put in higher gear at slow speed with lots of throttle.

Sounds too quiet for knock. Pull the clutch in, is the noise reduced or does it go away? Clutch baskets can make noise. There will either be a pressed bearing in the basket or in the engine case that could be shot. Pull the cover, springs and clutch pack (keep everything in order and watch out for any shims) and check for play / signs of wear. Edit - will need a clutch basket holding tool to remove the actual basket if needed.

98% sure its just honda valve tick. happens all the time. Adjust valve lash again, make sure its at tdc, If you wanna go the extra mile replace the chain, they're pretty common for having some chain slap too. Done this on more than one grom. Couldnt hurt to use a mechanics ear to isolate the problem either. Also dont listen to anyone talking shit about wheeling it and running it dry. Ive got a grom thats legitimately probably been on one wheel more than its been on two and its just fine. TLDR: valve tick, check lash at tdc, but its a honda, its common and trust me itll be fine even if you dont fix it.

taylor when setting the valves make sure that the piston is at tdc and as well it seems like there isnt enough tenstion on the timing change, may have stretched out alittle, because you if thats the stock timing chain and you said that it has the big bore kit that means that the stroke is possibly different as well so, the timing chain and and gears may need to be looked at as well as the tensioner. anyways as always keep up the great work love watching the videos !!!
@SkylineBNR347 жыл бұрын
How would stroke change with a different bore size?
@mattmaxwell35047 жыл бұрын
SkylineBNR34 In cars trucks bikes etc the cylinder bore is what the piston is in and you can have the block decked so you have a shorter or longer bore which you can also bore and hone bigger and sleeve or just bore and hone (meaning making the cylinder bigger in size) with stroker kits (dealing with the pistons) you can have. Shorter or longer strokes of the piston for combustion in side the block the shorter the stroke more air and fuel can fill the cylinder which you can also add a longer spark travel to with longer strokes less air and fuel can be crammed in to the engine and shorter spark travel which then all ties into the crankshaft and cams and came timing and cylinder head designs and heights and gaskets and so on (hope this was helpful to you and answered your question)
@SkylineBNR347 жыл бұрын
I know what bore and stroke is. But if you only bore the cylinder's out, you're not going to change the stroke of the engine unless you either change the rod or crankshaft. And looking up the 143cc big bore kit it is exactly as I thought. No change in the stroke with the Bore kit, so my point still stands. Why would the stroke change if your bore the cylinder out, because it doesn't change.
@dylanbusby-carver37877 жыл бұрын
SkylineBNR34 like what matt maxwell is saying, if the big bore kit was installed, the block and or head should have been decked a few thousands to calculate new proper compression values. and if that was done then that means that there would have to be adjustments made to the chain. its just something for taylor to look into. im not saying thats it, just throwing my oppinion out there
@h5ibluntman7 жыл бұрын
usually with big bore kits on bikes like these they just give you a new piston and new cylinder block so there is no machining involved like in car engines. So there could be differences in the cylinder block but that wouldnt make that sound. As a few people have said it sounds like a honda motor. unless we see a video of a stock one that is know to be good running then have his running after as to compare the two

Daniel Grogan +1 The single cylinder Hondas are notorious for stretching timing chains, especially if you run them at high revs for any amount of time. Wouldn't take you long to replace. Then at least you could cross that off the list of potential issues.

When you set the valve lash was the camshaft set at the base of the lobe? The tensioner may look okay, but is it getting worn out? Doesn't sound like knock.. you would have problems with oil pressure if it was knock. Try a thicker oil to fill tall tolerances if you fear internal engine damage. Sounds like timing tensioner issues though idk
@TomJenkinsTJ957 жыл бұрын
I'm tempted to say it could be bottom end (main bearings) on the way out! You don't have to take the entire engine apart, but take the flywheel off again and try and wiggle the shaft it mounts on as this is the crank shaft, if theres any sort of play, whether its up or down or indeed side to side, time to replace the bearings, pretty easy to be honest however! :) (Nothing you couldn't do! :P)

Could be the primary chain between the crank and transmission. Put it in first gear and watch the front sprocket while rocking the back wheel to see how much play there is. Another test would be to hold the throttle at the point it rattles the most, pull the clutch in and drop it into first to see if the noise gets better or worse.

I'm a motorcycle mechanic just for reference. Prolonged wheelies can starve the bottom end of oil. It sounds as if that is your problem. I've seen alot of these kinds of problems on sportbikes. tidbit; the Honda monkey engines, and the Chinese copies, have a tendensy to change the lash on the valves by themself quite often. check them regularly since they are so easily accessible. or end up like me, stuck at a red light with a bike that refused to run/or start. was kicking on the kickstarter until I had destroyed my foot and rubbed the skin off my sole. I later found that the entire nut on the intake side actually had backed all the way off, and was just laying there, allowing for the valve to adjust however.
@jeep20037 жыл бұрын
are you sure the exhaust isnt leaking. sometimes can be misleading. You can check for rod knock most of the time pretty easy. just turn the wheel so its pulling the piston down then push the piston down with a screwdriver or something through the plug hole. If it clunks youve got trouble

timing chain might have stretched similar problem with the 1.8 bmw 3 series (it would end up skipping a tooth in the cog) replace the chain and the spring tensioner it sounds like the chain smacking against the tensioner
@skyaustin017 жыл бұрын
Timing chain looks kinda stretched, but that noise is either piston slap or rod knock. Quick way to find out is to put a couple grades heavier oil in and start it to see if the noise goes away or quiets down. If it quiets down your gonna have to tear it down and replace either rod bearings or the whole assembly depending on how this motor is put together. The heavier weight oil will take up some of the clearances caused by worn rod bearings.
@keelerracing7 жыл бұрын
timing chain may be worn out but it sounds quite a bit like rod knock or piston slap. you might pull the head and cylinder and you can actually check for a loose rod... will need a service manual for reference on stuff but it's pretty easy. good luck to you Taylor
@Bgb.productions7 жыл бұрын
That sound is somewhat normal for a Honda, but a couple things you need to look at is one the stretched tilting chain, and two, you need to make sure you get that flywheel/omature real tight on there or it will come look and shear the keyway on the crank shaft
@nbfelipe16627 жыл бұрын
sounds like lose tensioner spring. spring may have gone soft and when you adjusted valve clearance you rotated cam to closed positions first like you would on a honda motor. or timing chain may be going soon

If you have internal damage, run a magnet through the old oil to determine the debris and damage. If you find allot of shavings in the oil on the magnet. You can determine if there is problems. I usually cut open a oil filter or run a magnet in the old oil if there is a problem with a car or transmission I am working on. You would see a clump of shavings or metal debris during engine failure.

@matt-roden7 жыл бұрын
It could be a valve train issue. I thought in other videos you mentioned this bike was bored out. Theory is whoever put the motor back together didn't have the timing correct. I'm not saying it being off by several teeth, but a half or one tooth past the timing marks in the direction the engine rotates. This can get overlooked pretty easily if all the slack in the chain is not on the tensioner side. Once tension is put on the chain, it hops a tooth or two. I'd be leaning more toward the chain stretch theory though as this is now becoming an issue. If it was off half a tooth past the timing marks when it was last worked on, and the chain could have stretched and it now off by one or more teeth. Spark notes: Make sure timing marks line up.
