While your video was not really long, it SEEMED long to me. I think it was your use of the metric system. Thanks for translating it for us in the US. I have owned this Insight for the last month, and I average 39 MPG.

I was going to ask if you drive in eco, plan stops slow starts etc? I'm looking at the Accord or insight and see that advertised mpg seems to be exaggerated with these high efficiency vehicles.

Couple of things to keep in mind. It’ll have worse fuel economy at first if it is totally new, since the engine has to break in. The cold is a killer. Both in terms of the batteries being less efficient but also that it uses the engine for heat, so has to have the engine on more often than it would otherwise. I have a 100 mile a day commute of mostly highway and it has definitely improved over time. Like once in 62F weather and going slightly below the speed limit (63mph) on the way home from work, I got 54.9mpg (50 miles of mostly highway). Once I happened to have a full battery starting the way back from a cafe on level ground and managed to use EV mode almost the whole 3 miles for over 133mpg (obviously not realistic but still fun). And this is with the Touring which has worse gas mileage due to the larger wheels. You can finesse things as you get more used to the car, depending on your interest. You can use the radar cruise control to follow a large truck on the highway for better efficiency (just keep back 3-4 bars to avoid rocks). You can go in sport mode to charge the battery if you know there are hills coming up (will use the battery to help the engine not work as hard) and switch to eco mode right before a longer downgrade to have it use the battery the whole way down. Usually I’ll charge the battery up to 2/3 before exiting the highway and slow down gradually to fill it the rest. That way I have a full charge and can go in EV mode the last mile to home.

@@ShawnFumo May I ask how much mpg u get in the city? I do home health care & it's all stop n go in city driving. My Subaru is KILLING me in gas. I am doing research to see which hybrid is the best for city mpg besides the Prius. I cannot afford the Prius. So, how does the insight do o mpg in city & how many miles can it go on a full tank of gas pls??
@ShawnFumo
@ShawnFumo 5 жыл бұрын
Jade Kain, well it depends a lot. Personally I do a ton of highway driving but even then I’ve gotten 52mpg over a 50 mile stretch of highway if I’m careful. It does pretty good on stop and go if you don’t have a lead foot. But there’s a period of time where it usually wants the engine to warm up before it goes to the battery. So if all your trips are 5 mins long, that can hurt you. But if you’re doing 15m+ trips under 65mph, you should be pretty good. Have to keep in mind of course that heating the cabin needs the engine to run occasionally (though Touring you can heat the seats and get away with less air heat) and AC uses the battery. So if you’re stuck in standstill traffic for an hour and don’t have the windows open, eventually you’ll start to kill the gas mileage. Though even then at least the engine’s going half the time instead of all the time. But I wouldn’t be surprised if you can get 65+ mpg. I’ve had a couple of times where I did have a short errand and the battery filled up on the way to heat the engine but was still warmed up on the way home and I coasted back in EV mode at 100mpg over 1-2 miles lol. I’ll also just point out that stop and go traffic in terms of congestion is so much less stressful using the radar cruise control. I can just set it to follow the car in front of me and even if it comes to a complete stop for a while I can hit a button to have it continue following. I don’t even care anymore if there’s an accident on the highway besides making me late. Just steer to stay in the lane and that’s it.

Thanks for this video. I almost bought this car in November ; however, bought a KIA Niro Hybrid EX instead due to garage size and I really prefer hatchback for loading convenience even thought I had own many Honda before and know they had lasted me over 10 years on each of them I owned before. Glad to know that it achieves about the same range as the Niro.

I've had my new Insight Touring for 10 months now. I'm in Sudbury in Northern Ontario for you folks not familiar with the Nickel Capital. In the winter the gas mileage drops off a lot but I still manage to get 50-55 mpg in the city (Imp gal) even then. During late summer last year I drove it until it was down to only 15 km Range left in the tank, when I filled it up I couldn't squeeze more the 33 liters in the tank and it's suppose to take 40 liters. At the present time I have 630 kms on this tank full and the Range still shows I have 145 kms left. So if I get 775 kms on this tank full and I can only get 33 liters in it when I fill up that would mean that I'm getting 66.2 mpg (imp gal) At least 200 kms were on the highway so with a few more kilometers in the city instead of the highway & I would easily get 70 MPG. I'm ALWAYS in ECO mode as I didn't buy an Insight for fast acceleration but for fuel economy.

When I used to live in Barrie Ontario and I drove a 2002 Civic 5 speed back then. In early May one year I tried to find out how many kilometers I could get out of one tankful. The Civic had a 50 liter tank. I did about 5 1/2 round trips to work (approx. 170 km per trip) using Highway 400/Rutherford Rd going to work and Highway 27 on the return trip from work. I trip meter read 1069 KILOMETERS which is unbelievable, the fuel gauge was past the empty mark so I didn't have much gas left at the bottom of the tank. I short shifted for the whole 5 1/2 trips babying that sucker for all it's worth LOL but still cruising at 100 kph on the 400 and 60 to 80 kph on Hwy 17. I figure that was 62MPG on 98% highway driving which is incredible. My Insight could never get this kind of mileage on the highway but it's a GAS MILEAGE CHAMP in the city. Just thought you folks out there might want to know this little gas mileage adventure of mine. I'm always fascinated with numbers.
@henryhonda8408
@henryhonda8408 5 жыл бұрын
In case some of you come back and say 170 km round trip 5 1/2 times doesn't add up to 1069 kms. There was a weekend in between these trips to work & I probably did a little over 100 kms that weekend.

Mikey Byrnzie I just filled up yesterday..... 770 kilometers and it took 31.5 liters of gas. About 300 of those were highway miles so if they were ALL city I would have probably gotten around 850 kilometers. 770 kms equals 477 miles..... 850 kms equals 527 miles. 31.5 liters equals 8.08 US gallon or 6.94 Imperial gallon. So that tankful of gas I got 59 US mpg or 68.7 Imperial mpg and with more city driving it would have been 65 US mpg or 76 Imperial mpg. I always drive my 2019 Insight Touring model in ECO mode and I don't ever do any rabbit take offs (I'm gentle on the gas pedal) I purchased this wonderful machine for gas mileage and NOT for high speed acceleration. I would highly recommend this vehicle, it's a low maintenance highly reliable car that will last for years to come. I never worked for Honda and I'm retired.

The civic has basically the same rated output as my fit. At 100 km/h i get low 5s per 100 km hwy. I have driven in steady but slow traffic at 80 km/h and achieved low 4s per 100km. So in real hwy driving u should expect around 5.5 L per 100 kms. For my car in the city its like7 to 8 l/100km.

I just drove with 90/100 kph on the german Autobahn and at the end of the trip (50 kilometers), I had an averaged 4.1 l/100 km with my 1.5 Civic (uploaded a video of that). But in the city with lots of stop and go traffic the fuel consumption is really bad compared to the Insight.

I like the car, but I am not impressed with the range. My 2004 Honda Civic could get 600 miles on a tank of gasoline. 12 gallons x 50 mpg = 600 miles. This let me drive from SW Fort Worth, TX to Denton, TX 4.5 times a week. So complicated too. My old Civic Hybrid simply had a brushless DC motor attached to the engine to provide extra power. And the dash was nice to look at. Not over complicated and no trees or leaves, etc. "growning" as I drive.
