I had one of the first Jazz models, many years ago. 100% reliable, nice to drive and clever interior. It’s a shame it’s got its OAP reputation, as it’s still a good proposition. Enjoyed the video.

My Jazz is an EX model that I bought new seven months ago, having traded in my Golf estate 1.5 EVO. It took some getting used to but the big plus has to be ease of driving and less trips to the fuel pumps. The biggest negative is going uphill and having to try and balance engine noise with a reasonable rate of climb. Going downhill of course you reap the benefits of EV drive and regenerative braking. All in all I am glad I made the purchase. Thank you for your honest and very informative reviews.

Good review. Nice to listen too. Agree with all he says as I have one. Excellent vehicle have done 11000 miles now without any problems. I achieve 64 mpg averaged out but can achieve 72 on slow journey's especially on town runs as you are on battery most of the time.

I have one of these and it is great. However I don't think it has a cvt gear box. As I understand it, the electric motor is fed by the battery. When the battery is depleted the engine charges the battery which still drives the electric motor. Only when cruising does the dog clutch connect the engine directly to the wheels. Put your foot down at 70 mph and the clutch disengages and the wheels are drive by the motor while the engine charges the battery. Absolutely brilliant. Or am I mistaken?
@DefinitelyNotAGuru2 жыл бұрын
That’s right as far as I know, but it’s called an eCVT and looks like CVT, sounds like a CVT, feels like a CVT, just better.
@andrewsmactips2 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely correct. Here's the long boring description: When you boot it and it sounds like it's going through the gears, and in around-town driving when the battery needs charging, the engine will run but is only directly connected to the motor/generator, which in turn provides electrical power (via the inverter) to help drive the primary electric motor, and to top up the battery; the going through the gears sound is just there to sound familiar and "sporty." Over around 100 km/h the engine also runs (always connected to the the motor/generator) but now disengages a clutch to directly engage the final drive, and the wheels, via an overdrive gear. So in summary: There are no belts and cones and hydraulics in the classical variable ratio CVT sense, and there are no planetary gear sets. The primary electric motor is directly connected to the final drive and always runs, the motor/generator is directly connected to the engine - and runs with the engine to help drive the primary electric motor, and to top up the battery; and the engine is only ever connected to the final drive when cruising.

I have a SR trim on order - hopefully delivered at the end of the month. Currently driving a Mk3. The last service I had the new Jazz Mk 4 as a courtesy car. Took it to work on a round trip of 26 miles. Part motorway, part fast A roads, and some town driving. Trip computer stated 74 mpg. Up to around 50mph the engine works as a generator and delivers power to the electric motor which powers the front wheels. Above 50 mph the engine engages direct drive with the road wheels via an overdrive ratio. So it's not really a CVT box although it sounds like one. I got the indicated 74 mpg as I had no air con on (I switched the heating off) and I planned ahead and coasted whilst keeping up with traffic. As others have mentioned I'm not sure on the new shape, I prefer the MK3 of the two. My current Jazz has been 100% reliable, handles really well, and is good on fuel. Have noticed a drop in MPG since E10 fuel has taken over, but I think that's the same for all cars. For its size the amount of space inside is amazing. Can't think of any other car I've owned that uses the internal space so efficiently. Comments about it being an OAP's car are an unfortunate part of its image. The downside is I get cut up much more that any other car I've owned, and I'm nowhere near my 60's. Nor do I 'dawdle'. Really good review. Thanks for all your content.

Good review Jim, I would have thought its nearest rival was the Clio E tech hybrid which i've had since last July. It's good but I think I would have considered the Jazz had I known it was around then. As for it being a pensioner's car, well, i'm a pensioner and I, like a lot of people I think, are simply looking for smooth,comfortable,reliable motoring and don't really give a jot about handling or whether the steering has any 'feel' , things that a lot of reviewers seem to obsess about. The seats look fairly comfortable as well although looks can be deceptive. I noticed,Jim,you didn't mention anything about seat comfort so I assume they were acceptable. In my opinion, most small cars these days have seats that about as comfortable as a park bench, my Clio included, but perhaps that's just me and my skinny frame.
@DefinitelyNotAGuru2 жыл бұрын
Seats are comfortable but would benefit from a bit of lumbar adjustment. As for the drive and “feel”, it’s actually great on this. Not heavy, not light, just - very good all-rounder.

Honda has stopped selling the Jazz in here Australia which is a shame. Not that I want one but I owned 2 in succession for quite a few years as 3rd cars for friends and family to drive when visiting from the UK. It’s not a CVT it’s a single speed clutch. The engine drives the generator which both charges the small battery and drives the wheels up to about 60mph and then the single speed clutch is engaged and only then does the engine drive the front wheels. Up to 60mph the engine is only driving the generator which drives the electric motor.
