Yep, mine is a farm 420 also. Definitely like strait axel for pulling implements. Sold my 13 model that was still running strong and NO issues. Bought a 22 model and I’m extremely happy with it. Would never spend my money on anything other than Honda. They have never let me down for work and play.

I've owned several honda sport bikes, and loved them, but this is the first honda quad I've purchased. So far extremely happy with the decision though, it's been a great unit. Great to hear from other people who use them for the same jobs I do that are still relying on them after that much time. Thanks for the comment!

The 420 Ranchers have a towing capacity of 848 lbs for both the IRS and straight axle variants. Oddly, the 520 Foremans have the same 848 lbs tow rating, except for the Rubicon variant. The 520 Foreman Rubicon has a 1,322 lbs tow capacity rating, and they are all IRS. I would have thought a straight axle was better for pulling, too, but the data showed me otherwise. IRS seems to be the same or better than straight axle. Weird.
@cheechakooutdoors2 жыл бұрын
@@jameshanna8762 It's not about the towing capacity, it's the load factor. On an IRS quad, the load goes to the suspension, where on a solid axel it goes straight to the axel. While it's not detrimental, I'm not a fan of the sag in the rear end when an IRS is under load, and for constant cornering, like when I'm harrowing the round pen or pulling a roping dummy in the arena it causes a constant sag on the inside rear.

The pull start is factory in Canada only. I have the same ATV in Texas and the recoil starter is an optional accessory.
@cheechakooutdoors2 жыл бұрын
Good to know! It still boggles my mind that companies have moved away from recoil starters. For where I go with mine, I can’t imagine not having the piece of mind of being able to start it should something go wrong with the battery or ignition system. I had the voltage regulator pack it in on my Polaris and I would have been stranded without it…then my buddy bought a brand new Can Am, and it wasn’t even an available option. So bizarre…
@jameshanna87622 жыл бұрын
I bought a Rubicon 520 in Dallas last week, and the pull start was not even listed as an optional accessory. I looked at the engine and saw that a 420 pull start would mount to it, though. I sourced one on ebay (those things are scarce for some reason) from a powersports in CA for $109. Watched the one video on YT on the installation and managed to get it on and functioning in a few hours of getting intimate with the quad. I love it! I still have a couple 250ES Big Reds and a couple of 350X's. You just can't kill a Honda. Pro tip: You WILL need a 1/2 inch impact driver to back that crank bolt out. I tried it with my 1/4 inch impact driver (because it fit into the frame more easily) and it wouldn't budge it. No way to do it with a hand tool, as the engine will just turn with the bolt. I could not stomach having no secondary start option. That oversight doesn't make any sense to me.
@cheechakooutdoors2 жыл бұрын
@@jameshanna8762 Great info! ...and absolutely...I couldn't imagine going out into the back country without a secondary starting option. Around the farm it'd just be an inconvenience, but out there, it could turn into a serious problem. Still boggles my mind that companies moved away from having it as a standard feature.

Gear shift is very stiff. And pull start has lots of compression. That’s all the problems I know of. I got 400 hours on my rancher 2019 and it always takes me home. I just do regular maintenance. I love the Honda rancher. Great hunting, land riding four wheeler. I ride around my family lands with it all the time. P.s it can pull up a 18 foot aluminum boat no problem, sometimes I need to use 4x4 when there’s load on the boat.
@cheechakooutdoors2 жыл бұрын
I'd agree with that; although, my gear shift has gotten better with use now. Reverse is still stiff shifting out, but it's noticably better than when I bought it, and when you get going, 1st and 2nd shifts are still a bit stiff but it smooths out after that. Aside from that though, no real complaints yet, which is great in my opinion.

I have the identical model and yr. . . I considered installing the pull start also, for the same reason you mentioned. . But I was told that since it is a electronic fuel injected engine, the pull start would be ineffective if the battery was dead. . In order words, the electronic carburated system requires some electric current to operate all the sensors or it wont start. A pull start doesn't have that ability. Any info you have about this would be appreciated. Thanks
@cheechakooutdoors10 ай бұрын
Hey, sorry for the delayed reply! I’m definitely not an expert on the mechanics of it, but the person you talked to was partially right. Yes, the traditional recoil starters can be less effective on the fuel injected systems, but there are options out there that are better designed for the newer machines. Whether Honda has those readily available or not, I couldn’t tell you, but consider that most new fuel injected snowmobiles still have recoil starters, so they clearly do work. From personal experience, I did kill the battery on mine this year on one of our moose hunts because I had the floodlights on while we were processing a bear, and the pull start is what got me going again. No issues 🤷♂️
@gfkusaka10 ай бұрын
Thanks for your response ! . . I did contact a honda dealer who did some research, and he found out that a recoil can be installed on a fuel injected engine. . But it does require the install of a capacitor, which will supply the electric current required to start the engine if the battery is dead. . . Total cost about $500.00 . Thanks again and take care.

Looking at a 420 es So no power steering and it has semi automatic trans with shifters on the handle. I will be doing my driveway and my parents. Will the semi auto trans be ok for that or will that be annoying. Also what about the power steering. Is it a deal breaker without power steering or not a big deal Thanks in advance for anyone that can help ..
@cheechakooutdoors Жыл бұрын
I don’t think the power steering will give you any issues. I honestly don’t even notice. They’re just not big or heavy enough for it to be a deal breaker, from my experience anyways. As for the semi-auto, I don’t have any experience with that set up, but I don’t think you’d have any issues doing what you’re looking to do. For the distances/speeds you’re going, I’d think it would be an non-issue for you. 👍 …hope that helps!

They're not technically sold as a, "2 up," model rated for 2 passengers, so you'd have to double check with your local provincial or state laws, but as far as the machine itself goes, yes, it's fully capable of carrying a second person. I would probably add one of those secondary aftermarket seats for the rear cargo rack since the stock seat isn't super long. Hope that helps! 😁
