InsideEVs contributor Tom Moloughney takes the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 on a cold-weather 70 MPH range test.
The Ioniq 5 in this video features a 77.4 kwh battery pack and is EPA-rated at 256 miles. With these conditions, we expect to see less range than that figure, but the Hyundai has the potential to do quite well. Watch each chapter of the video to get real-time updates from Tom and to see the information breakdown of how much energy the Ioniq 5 uses on the trip.
Chapters
00:00 - 01:13 Introduction
01:13 - 07:51 Vehicle Specs & Details
07:51 - 12:49 25% State of Charge

Tom, thanks for the great range test on the IONIQ 5. Without tests like yours I would have not known what the IONIQ 5 would be capable of doing at 70 mph in the winter. Today I watched your podcast and I noted all four of you seemed disappointed with the sub 200 mile range you got under winter conditions. I have a few points that might explain the less than lack luster results. 1) The IONIC 5 has a 77.4 kWh battery pack delivering 111.2 Ah at 696 volts. When the pack is at 100 % SOC it would probably have 89.0 kWh at 800 volts but it would still only have 111.2 Ah. Also, to get these values the battery pack temperature would need to be somewhere between 20 to 30 degrees C (25 C average). Basically, when you start with a 0 degree C battery temperature your battery would probable loose about 25 % of its usable capacity, which would make the pack about equal to a 58 kWh at 25 degrees C. Hence, your sub 200 miles range is to be expected. If you have used the winter battery heating mode it would stand to reason that the battery pack may only loose about 10 % of it's capacity due to a lower temperature and probable only about 2 % more energy to run the heat pump. Under this test cycle would probably get around 225 miles of range. 2) When you start with a larger battery, say 100 kWh and you do a test at 0 degrees C that battery would probably have a usable capacity of around 75 kWh. Do the other tested EV's with larger batteries have heat pumps? Do they have a winter battery heating more? Do they have battery pre-heating to speed up the charging time (Hyundai will have soon with a software update)? I would be very interested to see the results from a test that used the above notes system setting, after all, if Hyundai added them to the IONIQ 5 there must have been a good reason!

Great video as always! Would be possible for you to make the 70mph test with a rwd long range on winter? So everybody can compare??? Think that although front motor is disconnected when vehicle is running and not asking for power, but is physicaly there. And the whole front motor package (everything included) should be 130-150 pounds (I guess), so you are dragging that weight the whole time. Again, great video!!!!

@Tom, the real difference between your test results and Kyle's is more about altitude than temperature. Your test was effectively at sea level while Kyle's was at 5,000 feet. Given similar humidity (looks like it was close) the air displaced by the car as it moves weighs an amazing 13.8% less at 5,000 feet than at sea level. Adding to this advantage is the fact that Kyle's air was 2.7-ish% less viscous at that altitude. There are many variables, but these numbers are close. I have noticed the difference in air density myself on numerous occasions. As a flatlander I have discovered that standing, walking, and similar high impact athletic events are hampered in the absence of air. Several years ago I took a fast motorcycle up into the Rockies. At sea level I usually get 34-36 mpg riding moderately. Up in the mountains riding like a hoodlum I was amazed to get 53 mpg. That bike with me on it has the Cd of a partially inflated parachute so this result shouldn't have surprised my oxygen deprived brain as much as it did. Love your tests. The consistency of your method makes the results meaningful for comparison with other vehicles in similar weather.

Just check the modes table (I only have a french version). Full tIme AWD is available both in Sport and Snow modes only. Except if you see "the plod" in your mirror and you're speeding you better slow down in case they need to get their stop numbers up. If you're lucky they don't want the paperwork! As I don't have to drive for a living I'd rather take the "A" roads (on a long trip) over the Motorway every time just to reduce the risk of getting stuck for hours behind an accident. Can anyone guess why they didn't set preconditioning as a standard option from launch?. . Because the range was already suspect. . This has been my main concern living in Eastern Washington/Northern Idaho. I drive 2-300 miles in a day and some of the destinations I go have very limited charging capabilities and in the case of Tesla there are NO charging stations North of Spokane to the Canadian border and 100 miles due south of Spokane. I have a plugin Hybrid and when its cold my battery provides less than 1/2 of what Ford advertised.

Your use is a good case for PHEVs. While your altitude (about 2,000 to 2,600 feet along your route?) will improve range somewhat compared to Tom's result, but climbing in altitude takes much more energy than can ever be recovered on the way back down. I love EVs but it seems that for you it would be a giant hassle to make that loop every day in an EV assuming you don't buy a $130k Lucid Air GT. Driving 1,000 miles a week you'll be looking for a new car in 3 years anyway and may have better options by then.
@0hypnotoad0
@0hypnotoad0 2 жыл бұрын
Wait, you drive that in a day, or you drive that every* day? If a 300 miles drive is something you do once a week, or once every few weeks, just charge for 5 minutes on the way. Not every stop at DC fast charger needs to be a full charge, you can just plug in long enough to juice you up enough to get you to the destination, where you'd ideally find a much cheaper level 2 charger to park at. Quite honestly if you're doing insane mileage every day for some reason, you should be trying to find out how to make an EV work for you, not trying to find out whether an EV is a "good fit," unless someone is paying for your gas, 300 miles a day would be an exorbitant amount of money spent on fuel.

@@0hypnotoad0 I drive 3-4000 miles a month. Assuming a 20-22 day work month that’s 150-200 Miles a day. Most EV range would, on the surface, work. The problem is on certain trips there are NO EV charging stations. This would force me to drive my ICE car that at best gets 19MPG(Toyota 4Runner). The other issue is that the range is dramatically reduced in cold weather on my current Plug-in hybrid so my assumption is that would be a problem on most EV’s as well. Range anxiety is not a good feeling. I’ve had that on one of my motorcycles in the past.

@@PapaDougsAdventures01 I checked around Spokane, and there are chargers in adjacent towns. An EA 350 kw station in Ritzville, and 50 kw stations in Pullman, Bonners Ferry and Rosalia. North of the border there's Salmo, Christina Lake, and Creston. Admittedly that's not a fantastic selection, but would likely be serviceable for a vehicle with 200-250 miles of range. I'd keep an eye on it, build-out of charging stations is happening pretty quickly and it may only be 2-3 years before your area has a smattering of chargers.

ICE vehicles also have decreased mpg in colder weather, so a decrease on EV’s is to be expected. However, the refueling time is most important on many road trips unless one wants to take long breaks in between fueling. I would like to see this test done in really cold winter conditions experienced in the upper mid-west states where temps can drop and remain well below zero. You should try a test in northern Minnesota, say International Falls. A lot of companies do cold weather testing in that area. If one is only driving short distances during the day, may not be an issue. I’m more concerned as to what happens when the batteries are exposed to sub-zero temps for a typical work day (8+ hours) without the ability to keep the battery warm. Do these vehicles have a mode to keep the battery warm during that time period? How does that affect kWh/mile? Would be an interesting test. Thanks for the video.
@lanceareadbhar
@lanceareadbhar 2 жыл бұрын
I don't believe they keep warm when sitting, but they may if plugged in to a charger. As you said, losing efficiency in an ICE vehicle isn't a problem since you can just go to a gas station and the refueling time is consistently fast. EVs are best for daily driving and charging overnight at home so you never need to go to either a fast charger or gas station. They don't come close to the convenience of driving an ICE car for a long road trip, especially in the winter months.

I really like the look of the Ioniq5 and the reviews have been mostly positive, but the efficiency is disappointing and probably a deal breaker for me. My commute is pretty much all freeway, driving 2,000-2,500 miles per month. Efficiency matters not only for range but also for the cost to recharge. My Bolt averages around 3.0mi/kWh in dry winter conditions and I consider that to be pretty poor. My Model 3 LR gets around 3.5mi/kWh. Some of the reviews I’ve seen of the EV6 indicate better efficiency, so hopefully it will be a lot better.

There's a lot of aspects of this cars efficiency that could be improved by the user. For starters it has a very low tire pressure. The Tesla Model Y and ID.4 are both running 40+ psi on their tires, you lose a bit of stopping distance when increasing pressure, but moving up 4 PSI would not have too much of an impact on safety, so long as you're not constantly tailgating people. Conversely, eventually switching to a more lower rolling resistance touring tire could also boost the range. As for driving method, seems in order to get the best efficiency in the AWD model you need to keep the front motor disengaged, which means drive in Eco mode, and do not engage i-pedal (this locks in the front motor). Conversely, there's also two RWD options (standard range and long range) that are both more comparable to the Bolt in stock efficiency.

@@lanceareadbhar Can it charge that fast? The only person I've seen come close is Bjørn Nyland, and he is probably "the" expert at extracting the best charge out if any EV, not to mention he uses an OBD reader to achieve the optimum pack state before charging. On easier tests even he noticed odd sensor readings which throttle the charging. I can tell you right now that with a reader set up, both Tom and Kyle would see two readings. "Low temp", which would start at about 10°c and throttle charging untill it hits 20. Then "High temp", which would start above the 20° charge range, but not override, then would throttle at 40-45°. ...... Unless software allowed it to hit 50° in which case it would be better from 50% upwards. Question, if they're letting the pack hit 50° now, why didn't they before? Are they now running close to the limit of their cells just to hit the charging window? There's a fundamental issues with either the (2?) cooling circuits and/ or the sensor/ switching setup. It's another car that's been sent out when it was barely ready.

If you have a more regular commute, you're not going to want to drive your car from 100% to 0% frequently. So if you only charged to 80% and if temperatures were subzero and you wanted to go say 80 mph, and you wanted to listen to the radio and you had multiple passengers i would guess the range would only be around 80 miles before you only had 20% left which isn't 20% of your range since the car seems less efficient (despite what the computer says) the less charge it has. That is the higher speed, more weight, lower temperatures, more climate control for more passengers and radio use would probably cut the range by around 30%. So 70% of 60% (using the battery from 80% to 20%) of 195 miles is only 81.9 miles in those conditions and 117 miles in Tom's conditions (one driver, 68 degrees climate, no radio, eco mode, 30ish degree weather, 70 miles an hour and running the battery from 80% to 20% instead of 100% to deep turtle mode). You might have to use a charger and therefore use battery preconditioning which will further cut your range. The ioniq 5 is just not a cold weather highway driver...

I'm a fan of the new and futuristic technology. Electric vehicles and any futuristic technology will be alot of fun. I want no more old fashioned way stuff including gas cars. There should be time for me and everybody to move on. I'll like to be like the people in the science fiction movies about futuristic times like Total Recall, Demolition Man, Blade Runner, CyberPunk, and Judge Dredd. Everything will be like Robocop and Terminator too.

Dense, close to sea level air vs. rocky mtn air - it makes a difference. I sense this car gets really thirsty as the speed goes past 60 mph. But then, 2.7 mi/kwh translates to about 6 cents per mile at my electric rate, which equates to about 55 mpg at the current gas price - not bad at all in the big picture, when you consider that most charging can be done where you live, if you’re able to do that.

Isn't this a comon issue with the Kia / Hyundai EVs, from (my very non-scientific testing in two Soul EVs 2018 30 and a 2021 64) the upper 50% of charge (100-50) seems to be consistant with range on the GOM and then the lower 50 (50-0%) seems pesermistic like its not a linear discharge. I think i've seen this evidenced in reviews that Bjorn and Kris have done in Norway on various Kia/Hyundais

*tire pressure * You mentioned that the tires were inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure. The question is, the vehicle or tire manufacture? The vehicle manufacturer usually suggests the recommendation lower than the tire manufacturer. Inflation to the tire manufacturer maximum pressure will gain you greater mileage, be it an EV or ICE.
