The features on this suv are amazing. need a learning curve for all the features, or one can just get in and drive. Either way it is amazing. Very impressed so far. @@williamhuebsch7668 Hi, Thanks for the reply. I actually did a test drive on both vehicles and like you said, Hyundai SF Plug-in is really nice and with extra features that Rav4 didn't have so I ended up buying it. I'm happy overall but there was a big issue with the car for the first 1000 miles. Extremely loud noise coming from the brakes when I took my foot off the gas then after the first 500 miles a very annoying noise coming from under the hood started to happen. I called the dealership and they gave me an appointment for one month from the day I called. But a week before the appointment, all the noises disappeared after I reached 1200 miles. I still took it to the dealership to get it inspected and they found nothing, no loose belts or damage on the brakes. Did yours make any strange noise? Now I'm very happy that I purchased the extended warranty 10 years 100k miles for $2,500

Thx for the comments! The engine only recharges the portion of the battery used for the hybrid operation. To charge the EV section would be less efficient. Great video and review Ed !. Thought it was a bit on the linger side when I found it but it is engaging and did not feel long after all. great Job. Question for you, I noticed there seems to be less buttons on the center console on the PHEV model, or both this one and the Hybrid have the same amount of buttons there compared to the non electrified versions of the Santa Fe? and, (I am in Ontario), should be expecting markups from any dealer? what a bummer. I briefly went into a dealer last week just to ask about the wait time and they said about 7 months. Thanks !
@edsgarage0012 жыл бұрын
Hi Juan, Yeah the very top trim, the "Calligraphy" is non - hybrid, and has more buttons/features. 7 months is not possible, as Hyundai has suspended production on the phev models. So it's more like 2 years. You might get a regular hybrid in 7 months, but I suspect even that would be more like a year. As for a markup, I'd be surprised if your dealer didn't mark it up. Great review, one question I have is the climate control on EV mode. Will the AC/Heater be on when it is in EV mode?
@edsgarage0012 жыл бұрын
Yes, the AC works in EV mode... But in the winter, it's actually more energy efficient to just run the engine for a minute or two every now and then for heat. The losses from an electric heater warrant just using the gas engine for heat instead. Plus it's actually a good idea for the engine to run intermittently anyway.... Keeps everything fresh.

I agree with Ed on both points. I walked away from an overpriced Ioniq 5 SEL and bought this exact plug in hybrid (US model). Of course, the buying process was terrible, but as I drove the car home today, I really enjoyed this car. It feels as luxurious as my e90 BMW but full of cool features and modern tech. I particularly love the blind spot cameras, panoramic sunroof, and the highway driving assist. Keep in mind that my wife has to bring four grade school kids to school every day, and leisurely, i sometimes have a car seat with a 6yr old, a 9 yr old, and a teenager to drive around. I didn't want a three row suv but i wanted more space. I also wanted to help the environment and since i have solar energy, this was the only vehicle that fit my needs. Full ev's are almost a full $10k more and this vehicle is already pretty expensive.

@@monkeyone24 Sure, the simple explanation is that when your EV range is depleted, the battery still has some juice in it that Hyundai segments to use for hybrid operation. So the vehicle continues to operate as a regular hybrid at that point.

There's also a 3+ year wait for any of the PHEV's right now. Also, I'd actually recommend the Tucson Ultimate, I find it's the better choice.
@wicker12343 жыл бұрын
Ed, does this PHEV have a way to force the battery to recharge while in hybrid mode? For instance. a competitor has a button that can do this so, for instance, while cruising in HEV on the highway after using up the EV battery capacity, you can recharge the battery so it is ready to change over to EV when you arrive at a city. I'm not sure how the Hyundai HEV handles recharging...whether it is restricted to regenerative braking and decelerating but that alone may not be sufficient to fully recharge the EV battery. Hyundai uses a belt driven generator to charge the EV battery so it should be possible to take advantage of this since it is driven whenever the engine is operating (although there will be a heavier load when it is actually generating so that will cost fuel efficiency).
@edsgarage0013 жыл бұрын
That's a great question Don, but as the hybrid drivetrain is extremely efficient, it becomes far less efficient when it's also charging the battery and the net gains are less the net losses, so it actually wouldn't be as economical. So Hyundai just has the system decide on the best practice.
@wicker12343 жыл бұрын
@@edsgarage001 I'm sure that the HEV system works out the best mix of Gas/electric and regen charging. It would be especially important when travelling on long stretches of highway when there is no opportunity for regen by braking. With the Hyundai system of using a belt driven generator (driven by the gas engine) there is always the opportunity to recharge the battery either continuously or intermittently. In your experience with the Hybrid on a long highway speed trip does the system recharge the battery then switch to EV until depleted then repeat?
@wicker12343 жыл бұрын
This is a good explanation of the HEV operation kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKrHgGqKfJJ-iMk I think I was confused on the belt fed generator/alternator. If the car is running on the gas engine only (say at 110 kph) is the electric motor still turning and is it recharging the battery or, is it decoupled from the engine by the clutch and the battery recharging is being done by the belt fed alternator/generator? Sorry for all the questions but I'm a mechanical engineer and enjoy "crawling through the weeds " on these things, lol.
@edsgarage0013 жыл бұрын
@@wicker1234 I appreciate your questions, and i wish i could answer them with certainty. But I can only speculate. I don't believe the motor/generator is always charging. I think once the battery "runs out" the only way to recharge the section of battery used for EV mode, is by regenerative braking, or plugging it in to charge.

@edsgarage0012 жыл бұрын
These batteries are very robust, and these vehicles actually only ever use about 70% of the batterys total capacity. I can confidently say the battery will get likely outlast your ownership. In the USA, the battery is actually covered for life! Here in Canada, it's got an 8 year 160,000km warranty. I've been with Hyundai since 2015, and so far I've only ever seen one hybrid battery replaced. But it was due to a build failure, not due to degradation. Plus it was from a 2012 sonata hybrid.
