I placed an order for this exact vehicle yesterday. This is the best most informative video I have seen so far. Ed has a very easy and relaxed way of presenting. Awesome in fact. It has crystallized my thinking that I made the right choice in a new car and am moving in the right direction before I go full on electric. Got mine 2 weeks ago , Lagoon Blue, 2 tone brown interior. Great Quality, beautiful interior after 250 miles averaging 38mpg. The features on this suv are amazing. need a learning curve for all the features, or one can just get in and drive. Either way it is amazing. Very impressed so far. Have charged it from house current 115v/12A. 58 mpg using electric mode. Hybrid mode gives mid 30s. havent used automatic mode yet. Plenty of instant torque from the electric motor when needed. still experimenting.

Hi, congrats on your new car. I'm thinking on getting a plug in hybrid Rav4 Prime vs this hyundai. I was wondering if you could give me an opinion on which vehicle should I get based on brand reliability. I currently own a 2003 Toyota 4Runner and I believe it's the best car in the world jajaja got it new and I haven't had any issues whatsoever. I am keeping it and will try to get 250 more, I'm currently at 243.

@@Bik3rboy666 Sorry for the late reply, i have been out of touch This vehicle ( so far ) has exceeded my expectations, I only have 3000 miles on it, No problems Quality is exceptional, MPG on Hybrid mode around town is low 30s to high 30s, in electric mode iTs just how many times you want to charge it, On 120v/12A it charges about 10% battery capacity an hour, small around town trips are fine for battery only. car is quiet plenty of power. Handles great. 2 complaints the 1600cc engine is a little noisy and the gas tank could be a little larger, neither one would stop me from buying again

@@williamhuebsch7668 Hi, Thanks for the reply. I actually did a test drive on both vehicles and like you said, Hyundai SF Plug-in is really nice and with extra features that Rav4 didn't have so I ended up buying it. I'm happy overall but there was a big issue with the car for the first 1000 miles. Extremely loud noise coming from the brakes when I took my foot off the gas then after the first 500 miles a very annoying noise coming from under the hood started to happen. I called the dealership and they gave me an appointment for one month from the day I called. But a week before the appointment, all the noises disappeared after I reached 1200 miles. I still took it to the dealership to get it inspected and they found nothing, no loose belts or damage on the brakes. Did yours make any strange noise? Now I'm very happy that I purchased the extended warranty 10 years 100k miles for $2,500

Great analysis, I just ordered one will be in about 2 weeks, Dealer had a 2000 markup but was more than made up by my trade in resale I had to get the top of the line to get the surround view. I cant wait to get my hands on this vehicle. The one I test drove was fantastic. Thanks for pointing out all the features, I was concerned about plugging this in to a 120V 15A outlet ,but you showed the charge rate selector which allow one to slow down the rate of charge. Thx for the comments! The engine only recharges the portion of the battery used for the hybrid operation. To charge the EV section would be less efficient. However, if going down a really long hill, the regeneration will continue to charge the battery, first to fill the hybrid portion then continuing into the EV portion.

Great video and review Ed !. Thought it was a bit on the linger side when I found it but it is engaging and did not feel long after all. great Job. Question for you, I noticed there seems to be less buttons on the center console on the PHEV model, or both this one and the Hybrid have the same amount of buttons there compared to the non electrified versions of the Santa Fe? and, (I am in Ontario), should be expecting markups from any dealer? what a bummer. I briefly went into a dealer last week just to ask about the wait time and they said about 7 months. Thanks !
@edsgarage001
@edsgarage001 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Juan, Yeah the very top trim, the "Calligraphy" is non - hybrid, and has more buttons/features. 7 months is not possible, as Hyundai has suspended production on the phev models. So it's more like 2 years. You might get a regular hybrid in 7 months, but I suspect even that would be more like a year. As for a markup, I'd be surprised if your dealer didn't mark it up. However, some dealers (like us) don't markup factory orders.

@edsgarage001
@edsgarage001 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the AC works in EV mode... But in the winter, it's actually more energy efficient to just run the engine for a minute or two every now and then for heat. The losses from an electric heater warrant just using the gas engine for heat instead. Plus it's actually a good idea for the engine to run intermittently anyway.... Keeps everything fresh.

While the Santa Fe is still a bit bigger, the Tucson gained a lot of space on the redesign, putting it in a position to steal away a lot of potential Santa Fe buyers. I think the combination of, exterior styling, feature content, price, fuel economy and EV range... I'd choose the Tucson Ultimate Phev over the Santa Fe Luxury PHEV any day.

I agree with Ed on both points. I walked away from an overpriced Ioniq 5 SEL and bought this exact plug in hybrid (US model). Of course, the buying process was terrible, but as I drove the car home today, I really enjoyed this car. It feels as luxurious as my e90 BMW but full of cool features and modern tech. I particularly love the blind spot cameras, panoramic sunroof, and the highway driving assist. Keep in mind that my wife has to bring four grade school kids to school every day, and leisurely, i sometimes have a car seat with a 6yr old, a 9 yr old, and a teenager to drive around. I didn't want a three row suv but i wanted more space. I also wanted to help the environment and since i have solar energy, this was the only vehicle that fit my needs. Full ev's are almost a full $10k more and this vehicle is already pretty expensive.

@wicker1234
@wicker1234 3 жыл бұрын
Ed, does this PHEV have a way to force the battery to recharge while in hybrid mode? For instance. a competitor has a button that can do this so, for instance, while cruising in HEV on the highway after using up the EV battery capacity, you can recharge the battery so it is ready to change over to EV when you arrive at a city. I'm not sure how the Hyundai HEV handles recharging...whether it is restricted to regenerative braking and decelerating but that alone may not be sufficient to fully recharge the EV battery. Hyundai uses a belt driven generator to charge the EV battery so it should be possible to take advantage of this since it is driven whenever the engine is operating (although there will be a heavier load when it is actually generating so that will cost fuel efficiency).
@edsgarage001
@edsgarage001 3 жыл бұрын
That's a great question Don, but as the hybrid drivetrain is extremely efficient, it becomes far less efficient when it's also charging the battery and the net gains are less the net losses, so it actually wouldn't be as economical. So Hyundai just has the system decide on the best practice.
@wicker1234
@wicker1234 3 жыл бұрын
@@edsgarage001 I'm sure that the HEV system works out the best mix of Gas/electric and regen charging. It would be especially important when travelling on long stretches of highway when there is no opportunity for regen by braking. With the Hyundai system of using a belt driven generator (driven by the gas engine) there is always the opportunity to recharge the battery either continuously or intermittently. In your experience with the Hybrid on a long highway speed trip does the system recharge the battery then switch to EV until depleted then repeat?
@wicker1234
@wicker1234 3 жыл бұрын
This is a good explanation of the HEV operation kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKrHgGqKfJJ-iMk I think I was confused on the belt fed generator/alternator. If the car is running on the gas engine only (say at 110 kph) is the electric motor still turning and is it recharging the battery or, is it decoupled from the engine by the clutch and the battery recharging is being done by the belt fed alternator/generator? Sorry for all the questions but I'm a mechanical engineer and enjoy "crawling through the weeds " on these things, lol.

@edsgarage001 3 жыл бұрын
@@wicker1234 I appreciate your questions, and i wish i could answer them with certainty. But I can only speculate. I don't believe the motor/generator is always charging. These batteries are very robust, and these vehicles actually only ever use about 70% of the batterys total capacity. I can confidently say the battery will get likely outlast your ownership. I've been with Hyundai since 2015, and so far I've only ever seen one hybrid battery replaced. But it was due to a build failure, not due to degradation. Plus it was from a 2012 sonata hybrid.

how much heavier does it feel compared to a hybrid or the 2.5XT?
@edsgarage001
@edsgarage001 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, not noticable. The battery is way down low, so it actually lowers the center of gravity.

I recognized some of that beautiful scenery! I am now way down here in Tucson Arizona, but used to live in B.C./Island. Good Review. Would be interesting to get more comment on the effectiveness of seat cooling, and A.C. vent air distribution ... clearly where I live, in typically over 100 F. temps for much of year, cooling comfort is a BIG consideration. Also, wondering if in regular Hybrid mode if there is not a terrific fuel economy on say a 100 mile trip due to the bigger battery and so forth. Very impressive vehicle.

@edsgarage001 3 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the comment! The vented seats are awesome, quite strong. As for the AC, I've heard no complaints on the regular hybrid, so I imagine the PHEV would be the same. Extreme temps both positive and negative always have a negative effect on economy, but compared to a regular gas only Santa Fe, it's still going to be significantly better.

No, Hyundai doesn't do auto parallel park. But some Hyundais have smart park, witch is remote controlled forwards and reverse into a parking spot.

Warranty in the USA is lifetime if i understand correctly. These batteries will outlive the car though. Hyunda hasn't had any issue with hybrid batteries at all

Thx, Actually it's 1.6L twin scroll turbo. Still uses regular fuel. Honestly, it's a great engine. Fuel efficient yet powerful. Plus the twin scroll and the electric motor combined eliminate the turbo lag.

Does the computer know enough to ignore you if you hit reverse while traveling at high speed? Conventional cars at least have a mechanical lockout.
@edsgarage001
@edsgarage001 2 жыл бұрын
Yes of course.... You can't put it in reverse or park if you're moving more then about 1kph It'll also prevent you from leaving it in drive if you get out or shut off the car. It quickly puts it into park for you.

@@edsgarage001 Thanks for getting back to me quickly. I figured 99 percent this was probably the case, but it's good to be sure. I already placed a factory order for this PHEV version. As a veteran SCCA racer, I was first drawn to the Tucson for the better handling, but I need a little more space, and I did like the superb comfort factor for my now aging bod. I also love all the buttons. I love to fantasize I'm flying a 747. Thanks for your excellent review.

Wow! That was fast! Thank you... I asked the local dealership, and they stammered. Said they would get back to me because it depended on the trim package. Then, I asked for wheelbase, ground clearance, angles of approach and departure. Ahhh... we'll get back to you... please come in and road test our demo. I replied that I needed the info or it wouldn't be likely I would visit. I just don't understand why they can't answer simple questions. Oh well, we'll see what happens when they call me back. Thanks again! I'll spread the word about your channel.
