Are you looking for a good time in a small package? Well I may have the answer...
And it’s the Mazda MX-5, because Miata.Is.Always.The.Answer. Currently in its 4th generation, better known as the ND generation by car enthusiasts, the 2022 model year receives no big exterior changes but is now available in platinum quartz metallic paint. Nonetheless, the Miata maintains its charm. The sleek head and tail lights present an upscale elegance, while the aggressive front-end and sculpted body show off its sporty nature.
Mazda claims the MX-5 is engineered with the driver in mind, so yes visibility along with an almost perfect 50/50 weight distribution and standard RWD set-up should definitely help enhance the driving experience.
Convertible operation is easy as 1.2.3. *Convertible operation and seating demo*. 1. Unlatch 2. Pull back 3. Click in place. Lots of headroom for me at 6’4” but I think anyone taller may feel cramped. There’s a tilt & telescopic steering column with a slightly skinny steering wheel, but overall it’s comfy in the driver’s seat.
All trims come with a 7 inch touchscreen also controlled via knob below shifter with wired android auto and apple carplay integration, with available wireless apple carplay on upper trims. However there is no wireless charging option on any trim level.
On top of small trunk space, there’s a lot of hard plastics, and passenger legroom is compromised by the transmission tunnel, so your cupholder should go behind your elbow which I find annoying. I just throw them in the rear center console which is lockable.
Now when you’re ready to drive, a couple things to note are the body colored door panels which can tend to get hot and with the top down, the sun can wash out your infotainment screen... but the good part is once you get this thing out on the road, you forget about all of that stuff.
That’s because the MX-5 is simply a fun car to drive. From carving up Angeles Crest to taking it to the track, the MX-5’s driving dynamics fits into a wide range of driver’s wants and needs. All trims include a 6-speed manual transmission with an optional automatic transmission only offered priciest grand touring trim for an additional $500.
That’s fine because people who purchase a Miata really want to get an experience out of it with that manual transmission. The clutch pedal is light, the shifter is easy to operate with short throws, and the steering is precise. All of this combined with some open air enjoyment... you can easily forget that there’s no space to place your phone.
Propelling the MX-5 is a 2.0L 4-cylinder making (graphic: 181 hp/151 lb-ft) . Although the power numbers seem small, the low weight of the car makes up for the lack of power and also keeps the Miata agile. New to assist with that agility, Mazda introduces Kinematic Posture Control, dubbed K.P.C. which slightly applies the brakes to the inner rear wheel when cornering to help lessen body roll.
The MX-5 was already a carver of twisty bits, but the added technology coming from the KPC system gives you an even more confident connection with the road.
Standard features keeping you safe on that road include lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and smart city brake support.
Upper trims receive a Torque-sensing limited-slip differential, sport tuned suspension with Bilstein shocks, and front shock tower brace. Noting that these features are not available on the automatic transmission...
...And that’s another reason to just stick with the manual transmission. As for ride quality, it isn’t too firm given the Miata’s sporty nature. It’s tuned just right to enjoy the ride. Maybe even enjoy it too much you may get caught singing when the top is down... like me.
You’ll also sing to the tune of these fuel economy numbers (Manual 26 city/ 34 Hwy, Automatic 26 city/ 35 Hwy). There’s even a shift indicator that suggests which gear would help produce the best efficiency.
Pricing for a base soft top Sport trim starts at (graphic: $27,650) not including destination charges. Standard features include LED lighting, 16 inch wheels, keyless entry, cloth seats, 6-speaker audio system, cruise control, rear view monitor and 2 paint options.
The Grand Touring trim starting at $32,650 adds automatic headlights, leather seats, navigation, rain sensing wipers, automatic climate control, and offers that automatic transmission with paddle shifters.
Though the affordable sports car segment is shrinking, the Mazda MX-5 Miata endures, offering a driving experience that makes you feel like a kid operating a racing simulator at an arcade. There’s a reason why the Miata has earned a cult following.

Most of my life, I dismissed Miatas as cute, impractical toys...then I drove one and instantly understood why they are so special. I rarely keep a vehicle for more than year, but I've had my 2019 MX-5 Miata for nearly three years with no planned exit strategy. I'm still just as smitten with it today as I was the day I bought it - if not more so. It's not my daily driver, but it actually could be. It's not only a blast to drive, but it's reasonably quiet and comfortable, fuel-efficient even when driven with spirit, and has a trunk large enough for most of what I bring home on my weekend shopping trips. Reliability has been impeccable and build quality is top-notch.

I've always loved the Miata cause when it 1st came out, they marketed it to those who wanted an MG but never got one or couldn't get one cause they stopped coming into the US around 1981. My uncle was an MG dealer and I remember getting into all of them when they were on the showroom floor.

Finally a tall guy that doesn't feel the need to pretend he doesn't fit in the mx5. I'm 6'2" and I see people shorter than me in the comments here on yt always going on about how they would get a miata if they could fit. The verdict: Don't let your ego get in the way of a good time.

My 2022 Club is being built as we speak. Soul Red, soft top with the Brembo/Recaro package. Glad to see someone with a similar build but 2" taller fit in it. I think I will mostly drive with the top down, but it's nice peace of mind. Zoom, zoom.

Nice review, Mike! I'm planning on ordering a ND2 GT manual soft top this fall. I owned a ND1 GT and everyday I regret selling that car and I've wanted another one ever since. I did consider getting a BRZ this time, but even tho it's a great car for a great price, nothing beats the light open air experience of the Miata...and the GT manual soft top is only about $2500 more than a BRZ Limited, so it's well worth that modest price premium. I just need to decide on the color. My last one was machine gray and I loved that color on the GT, but I'm seriously diggin this platinum quartz and terracotta combo. It's such an elegant look, perfect for the GT trim.

If you have 2 times the budget the Porsche Boxster can be fun. I wrench on my car doing the wheel rotations / wheel changes / oil changes / modifications. Plus I didn't have to take out a mortgage to Buy it ! Bought & paid for. Convertible sports cars are a blast.

Great review! I have the 2022 GT model, and the only thing I wish Mazda did was make the rear view camera and/or screen much better. The resolution on the Miata is poor compared to other late model vehicles. The other small gripe I have is the lack of MyMazda app connectivity. I understand that a whole new computer would have to be integrated for features, but they don't even have the manual available in the app. Other than these two small complaints, it's my sixth and most loved Mazda. My 2004 RX-8 was a close second.

Definitely one of the best looking engine bays…hope Mazda keeps this philosophy. Front still looks good…hope they don’t mess this up. The rear needs a more aggressive or muscular update…hope they’re working on this.

Disagree on the the back end its great. 2016 MX-5 Club soft top with Brembo brakes / BBS wheels owner here. In my view the rear has a classic look you don't see on other cars .... except the Jaguar F Type which is very rare. Love this car !

There should be 2 cubby storage units behind the seats as options for storing items. This car is small on storing stuff but big on driving dynamics. 👍

I owned a 2007 "NC" Miata. Mine had the automatic which I wanted because it was my daily commute car in stop & go traffic. Very fun car.

I had an ND and sold it a year ago. Missed it so much I just bought another one. These cars are so much fun and you can extract that fun without going to jail speeds.

@@DreamArchitect It feels like you’re going much faster than you actually are so while you’re doing 60 it feels like 80 etc. So you get the excitement of speed without actually breaking the law. They’re small with great handling so a simple sweeping highway on ramp is an opportunity to get on it more aggressively than you would in a regular car. It’s hard to explain.

The Miata is a fun car to drive. I drove an NA several years ago and, I loved the way how it drove. I had not have the chance to drive the ND, but I'm sure It's still a fun car to drive

When the ND debuted, I saw it at a car show and tried to fit in it and really couldn't, and I'm only 6'1". I was so disappointed to have to forgo it. So I'm shocked to see you in it at 6'4". May need to revisit.

What’s Mike’s inseam? I have a 6’2” friend who found it very uncomfortable in my dad’s ND, but I suspect it’s because he’s less legs and more torso. The more you drive this thing the more you like it. I found myself putting the top down before I even got in to the car, made entry and egress easier. It’s a pretty easy reach when you’re crouching to get in the car anyway.

Ive test droven their first new gen miata and still dream about getting one. Except i dont know how to drive a stick and i feel like im missing out. Even as automatic, i couldnt stop smiling while driving this masterpiece. That being said. Ive watched thousands of youtube vids of how to drive stick etc. But do dealership teach you how to drive a new purchased car if i were to pick one up?

Since the seat rails ride an arc in the Miata, torso length matters more than leg length.

I’m 6’ even, no problem with my 2016. However I had that issue with all the previous generations which is why I never bought one until the ND.

I bought a 2021 Mazda MZ 5 after my 2017 Fiat spyder 124 warranty expired last year. I thought that since the spyder was made by Mazda in Japan it would be Trouble-free But I was very wrong & from day one it was nothing but problems month after month after month. The problem was the engine was made in Italy & shipped to Japan. Since buying the 2021 Mazda MX 5 almost a year & a half ago I have not had a single problem & can drive it without the thought it would break down every time I rode in the Fiat. Year after year all years of the Mazda Miata have been very trouble-free compared to any of its completion or ever cars twice its price.

Funny how that works, when I was a kid my dad bought a vehicle called a Sterling as opposed to the Acura Legend on which it shared its basic chassis/engine/transmission…..needless to say Rover (the British company that manufactured the Sterling) managed to somehow screw up one of the most reliable cars and turn it into one of the most electrical prone nightmares of all time. He ended up trading it in on a Legend a short time later and that car was flawless

@@jameswillard1 Made-in Italy autos Look great but that's all they can brag about, In 2021 Consumer Reports gave the Mazda MX 5 the most trouble-free sportscar the most trouble-free no matter what the price might be.

@@brucebolduc3403 Fiat is owned & sold by Chrysler & they did not ever seem to know how to fix or service my car & since they sold so few of them they did not seem to even care. The engines were nothing but trouble the complete opposite of the Mazda.

I don't know why I watch reviews of a car I own, but I do -- and this one was spot on. One note -- the main advantage to the Club over the Sport is the LSD. That alone is worth the price difference in trim levels.

@@chrisx5127 Is an LSD worth the 3k difference? Absolutely, yes. An LSD reduces wheelspin by redirecting force (torque) to the wheel with the most traction. It helps you push your car forward, which .. let's be honest .. is the reason we drive sports cars.

why does it have both a shark fin and long antenna?

Shark fin is for SiriusXM and long antenna is for AM/FM. Most shark fins that also receive AM/FM are significantly larger than the Miata's relatively small shark fin and might look a bit bulbous on the tiny Miata's tiny trunk lid. Also, most multi-band shark fins are mounted on the roof where terrestrial reception like AM and FM will be better. Like the MX-5 Miata, the BMW Z4 also had a separate mast antenna for AM/FM until the 2018 model year, I believe.

torn between this and mazda 3. not usually in need of extra seats in back but would be sometimes useful, plus this costs more even if not too much. sadly old/used ones cost close as much as new so not worth considering. edit: and long term, well this would keep value better but at the same time I'll probably sell it in 5-8 years while I could keep a 3 longer

I’m in the market for a 2022 or 2023 Miata but the RF is juuuuuuust out of my price range. Looking to spend no more than 32k but I feel like I’ll need the hard top because I live in a pretty dangerous city with a lot of car break ins and the soft top seems like a bad idea. Not sure where to go from here

Don't , most enthusiasts wind up Buying after a test drive. How do I know ..... 2016 MX-5 Club soft top owner & I was lucky enough to get a Saturday almost closing time test drive. After the drive we worked on a deal with my trade in & told the manager I need some time to think about it. He said take for the weekend come back after work on Monday & make your decision. Drove that car on every good road / highway I could think of & Monday was there at the dealer with the trade in / checkbook to Buy the car. That Manager knew what he was doing letting the MX-5 sell itself ! When I came into the dealership to do the deal his Sales guy had a look of disbelief. I had put over 240 miles on my extended test drive.

Beautiful car and fun to drive. But if your bigger, It’s a tight fit. 5’10”. 215 lbs. it’s was uncomfortable to drive after an hour. I had the Recaro seats and they are tight. Sold it, waiting to see if there will be Nissan Z convertible.

Seats make a huge difference. I got the cloth seat in my 2016 Club & its really comfortable. Been in it for long hours no problem @ 5'10" 185 lbs.

LOL. I sat in one of these at work one day and my nose was even with the top of the windshield. I'm only 6'3" BUT I'm all torso and short legs.

The 50/50 claim for the 2.0 is an American sales pitch thing, as the 100lbs lighter 1.5 is actually a true 50/50 because the car was designed for that smaller engine. US drives always want more power so MAZDA played to the market.

@@yesmikedanger I have the Artic White & it weighs 18 pounds less than if it had Soul Red Metallic. The Artic White shows body curves much more & contrasts with the Black side skirts / front , rear splitters plus the trunk spoiler. All things being equal .... less weight means faster car. The Mazda Cup cars came only in Artic White for a reason.
