We just traded an ML320 Blutec for one (as a family hauler). The ML was a great vehicle, made it to 140K miles, felt solid and high quality at the end, could tow a 7000LB race trailer, and got 30-34MPG on highway. So the GLS was the next most likely option. As Jack said, comfort and luxury are important, but also Safety is a big item. And, we wanted something that would not feel like garbage at 80K miles. So far, the GLS has been great as a family hauler. As noted, it just feels like a safe, steady and comfortable drive. We cross-shopped the X7 as well, but it seemed like it had a smidge less cargo space, and my wife did not care about handling fun. As always I love your reviews guys - so funny! As an owner of a 2021 Q7 I am amazed at how the Germans do big crossovers. On the plus side, our Q7 rides better than any car with 21 inch wheels and low profile tires deserves to; it looks terrific with the black optics package and brown color. On the negative side, interior storage space is a total joke and the third row is not meant for regular people. Also, consumables for these European vehicles are much bigger than expected. I was shocked by how expensive snow tires were for our Q7, so buyer beware.

I know this is like beating a dead horse, But I think now more than ever, people want cars that are cheaper than they used to be, and not more expensive. Where have all of the promises gone? economies of scale, covid is over, etc etc etc? Shouldn't cars be getting cheaper to make? Some of the engines these companies uses are a decade old if not more! Why is a civic costing me as much as I paid for a fully loaded 2019 camry? These are the issues people care about, and this has nothing to do with SG or the channel, as the content is still fantastic and I love to watch it, but I think its time to raise some torches and pitchforks against these corporations that have started to take a "technocratic" near "apple/google like" stance on something that depreciates worse than anything else on the planet. And you can't tell me shortages exist, because they do not, has anyone seen the repo market? This is a SCAM by banks and car makers and dealerships.
@future622 жыл бұрын
COVID is far from over. And in real inflation adjusted terms cars are a lot cheaper. A 2022 Civic costs about as much as a 1992 Accord in real terms, but is a much better car in pretty much every way. Automakers have done their part on the affordability front; most of the issues around affordability are economic.
@colin-nekritz2 жыл бұрын
It's honestly worse than that, these cars as many aren't just outpacing inflation and most people's means - not that people won't take out a 96-month loan at 14.98% at $1,299 a month for these things - but the fact they're making cars like these more disposable than ever. Those electronics are going to be a $1-4K expense when they go on the fritz and will look woefully dated in four years, in some cars less. Just the general cost of all the repairs compared to say a 1997 Camry or even a 2011 Malibu which, not if, but when they happen, as so much is connected to electronic nannies, is going to make these cars, even accounting for inflation, beyond the pale in terms of cost to own and operate. Car makes will continue to push the false narrative that their buyers are demanding all this gadgetry, but, the truth, the reality, from surveys and polls independent of the automakers has shown every time that's not the case. Given a choice to pay for gee whiz tech at even a modest $2-3K markup vs standard gauges, it's telling that most people honestly don't give much of AF outside of "does this have Android/Apple car play?" As in, yes, smartphones, also a very disposable but far, far, FAR less expensive to own and replace pieces because many consumers ARE aware that it'll be cheaper and easier to replace a smartphone than a giant screen in their car. The car industry and the consumer are heading for a day of reckoning discussed on other car channels and you don't need to be an economist to grasp the current new car market and the economy is not sustainable.

Merc faces a lot more competition in this segment than they previously had. The new Range Rover is gorgeous and while the x7 lacks some practicality (minimal space behind 3rd row seat), you feel like you get the 7 series interior with the x7. The GLS just feels like an extended GLE, and is a few notches below the S class in terms of luxury. I think Merc really needs to improve the interior (or at least offer S-class seats in the GLS) of they're going to lost a lot of business to their competitors. Ironically, I'd probably choose the GLS over the other two because at this size, I want the most practicality. x7 is fun to drive (relatively speaking), but at the end of the day you're driving around in a huge 7-seater family hauler. Don't try to make it more than what it is

Yes, every single person on the planet needs to drive a vehicle at least this big just to be safe in case of a collision with a small bush on their way to the local store!

Hello Geese folk. I just wanted to tell you I really like your videos. I thought about going for a Dell because of you guys but ended up getting a Thinkpad because it was cheaper. (For school I mean). Hello from Finland! 😊

I have the GLS550 as the winter car, family hauler and boat tower.. It is great. My wife has an X5 and she drives with the seat all the way forward as she is sub 5 foot. She wanted a GLE450 as it is a tich nicer, but impossible to find.

Mark wants to sit like that so he can get absolutely murdered by the airbag. Really goes to show how much he loves this car, he's willing to die for it.
