Aiya so cute. Thanks for translations! Hope everyone had a good first dream of the year~ -- Pretty certain most of you guys are familiar with the hatsuyume in Japan, but I'll write about it anyways. Hatsuyume (literally first dream) in Japanese culture, is the first dream you have in the year. The contents of the dream would foretell your luck through the current year. Although the first dream you would technically have is likely on the night of Dec. 31st, but since most people typically stay up to celebrate the transition from the previous year to the next (staying up till midnight), hatsuyume is usually viewed as the dream you have on the night of Jan. 1st. Traditionally, if one were to dream of Mt. Fuji, a hawk, and an eggplant, they would have extremely good luck that year. This relates to a proverb, which goes "Ichi-Fuji, Ni-Taka, San-Nasubi, Yon-Sen, Go-Tabako, Roku-Zatou," which roughly translates to "1 Fuji, 2 hawk, 3 eggplant, 4 fan, 5 tobacco, 6 blind acupressure." This refers to the order of the luckiest things to dream about, though only the first three (Mt. Fuji, hawk, eggplant) are generally memorized due to their popularity. Why these things were specifically chosen are unknown, though they're usually associated with either meanings or as things that Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu liked. As for the former theory, here's some of the potential meanings (at least, for the former 3 parts of the proverb) 1) Mt Fuji: either referring to the height of the mountain itself-being the tallest mountain in Japan-and the awe it inspires, or its similarity to the word for immortality [fushi vs fuji, which looks even more similar in kana: ふじ(fuji) vs ふし(fushi)] 2) Hawk: reaching great heights 3) Eggplant: Japanese spelling is "nasu," which shares the same pronunciation as the verb for "to accomplish" (also nasu in dictionary form).
