You said the bike has really good brakes. Which I found very interesting since all the reviews from other users said the brakes are terrible and must be replaced if using the bike on trails.

That’s a good point. The stock brakes worked at the time this was filmed. They did eventually fail and were replaced with Shimano hydraulic brakes which have been flawless. Thankfully mine were replaced under warranty.

You're an awesome dad! I loved how you said it was an adventure and the most important thing is to have fun! I'm buying my 3 year old his first pedal bike soon, a RipRock 16. I can't wait to ride with him like you do with your son once he gets a bit older!

@@letsgoridebikes Thank you! Also, I wasn't even aware of "shotgun seats" as a thing! I've never seen anyone in my country ever apply it. But I will definitely inquire about it, because it looks hella fun!

There was plenty of frustration too, from both of us 😅 We took Rusty Muffler, Neverland, Yellow Brick Road, Lynx, Far Out, Chipmunk.

That's a sweet bike for your boy, he crushes the climbs. My daughter has just started riding on 16" wheels. I still have her on coaster brakes but not trail riding, we live in a flat townhouse complex. What age did you get your son using hand brakes? I bought another 16" bike with cable disks but she demonstrates so much control and does sweet skids with the coaster brake. I have to say the Trek Precaliber bikes have excellent standover, size specific cranks, plus size kids tires, high stack height and vibrant colors. She slayed the paved pump-track at Alice Lake on her bright orange bike and I was so stoked for her. I want to introduce her to disk brakes and trails but make it super fun and keep "new bike day" special. She's a tall 3.5 year old. Great tip with the tubeless 20" tires.

I wish we had bikes like this when I was a kid! It’s even got a narrow wide chain ring and boost spacing axles, 15mm front and 12mm rear. I got him on hand brakes around 3-3.5, we skipped the coaster brakes altogether. We started on mellow single track as soon as we could, but the tires on his 16” bike weren’t that great so that was challenging sometimes. Definitely spent lots of time at the pump track, BMX track. Now he pumps and rails berms like a big kid!

I got the Chromag and wheel parts from my local bike shop, Freedom. I had the seatpost, derailleur and cassette already.

The description of the bike he's doing is so cute. I bought a Rip Rock 24. Does the wheel and tire support tubeless? Did you just work on the rim tape?
@letsgoridebikes
@letsgoridebikes 8 ай бұрын
I gorilla taped the rims and installed tubeless valves. It took some pressure to get the tires to seat, you pretty much need a compressor. If it unseats while on a ride from a flat tire… well you better have a tube.
@Park-C
@Park-C 8 ай бұрын
I'll carry the tube, but I was wondering because I basically prefer tubeless. Thanks to you, my curiosity has been solved. Thank you. I hope you are always happy with your son. :)@@letsgoridebikes

Great video. Was there a trick to setting it up tubeless? I was under the impression the stock wheels weren't tubeless ready? Thanks for any info.
@letsgoridebikes
@letsgoridebikes Жыл бұрын
I used 1” Gorilla tape around the rim to seal off the spokes, it was the perfect width. I got a bunch of Muc-Off “build your own valve” parts, with a standard tapered seat for inside the rim and then a spacer for the outside to fill the gap between the Schrader hole in the rim and the Presta valve stem. Had to use a compressor to get the tires seated, but once they were on, can get away with as little as 3 psi.

nice setup , could you tell me the seatpost clamp diameter and what pedals you go there

35mm clamp diameter and Chromag Radar pedals; metal pins seem scary, but they grip well and my son has never slipped a pedal!

Could you please recommend a dropper post for the RipRock 20?
@letsgoridebikes
@letsgoridebikes Жыл бұрын
There’s two main factors to think about. Your child’s weight and how much drop their little legs can deal with. Since they are smaller/lighter, a lot of adult posts don’t work because the kid will be too light too push it down. If you have too much drop/travel, it will over extend their legs when the post is up. I’ve heard the OneUp v2 post is pretty good, has a lighter action and available in travel down to 70mm, which is adjustable to grow with your kiddo. Start there and do some more research to make sure you find one that does what you need!

Do you happen know an exact kick stand that will work with the Rip rock 20? I have no problem taking it off when we hit the trails, but for the standard neighborhood riding, it would be nice to have a kickstand on and would help take care of it. Specialized doesn't make one for the riprock 20 and I can't find an after market one that is compatible. Do you happen to know of an after market kickstand that would work?

I don’t know, sorry! Just teach your kiddo to put it down so the drive side is up, it’s a good habit to learn as a mountain biker!

So when you changed it to a short cage derailuer did you have to change the cassette to a smaller max cog? If so what did you take it down to?
