We're pleased to share our first ever long-form ski boot review! Tecnica dropped these off last fall and Bob's been putting the Cochise 120 and 130 to the test over the past month at Stowe!

More boot reviews please, and yes we know there is subjectiveness to it - that's why we watch them! Also, Jeff doesn't need to be so sensitive to slightly critical remarks from Bob. I appreciate the honesty from time to time, instead of constantly trying to spin everything in a positive way or claiming that everything is 100% subjective. Ski gear technology is still improving. Tell us what you really think!

Great review guys. Thank you. I have been on the 120’s for a couple of seasons in Australia and in Japan. These are the best hybrid boots I have used. When I was a younger fella and worked in ski resorts I loved 130 stiff boots. I was much fitter and lighter then. My ski day was usually a short 2-3 hours then off to work so a stiff boot was perfect. Now I’m in my late 50’s my ski vacation days are longer and much more leisurely. So a 120 flex and all day comfort are much more important. But these boots still perform awesome for those hero runs putting in big GS turns and getting the skis up on the edge. Perfect for short tours and bootpacking also. Great walk mode. My only concern is getting them on and off when the shells are cold. That shell plastic gets super hard to open. Definitely don’t leave them in the car overnight.

Ha! Good advice on the car. And yes, these lighter plastics do seem to be a bit more temperature sensitive when it comes to stiffness

Excellent format -- thank you for this. I have already made my major seasonal purchase (Atomic Hawx Prime 120S GW), partially with the help of Bob's short-form boot intros a couple months ago. Even though I have bought boots, I see these as an excellent source of industry knowledge / base research (just like the ski comparisons)- keep it up, please! And, two SLOW signs means Bob's Ridge is imminent, go Bob!

Definitely more Boot Review/Info video's. the boot is the most important thing to a skier for control and how long you can hit the slopes on a given day. When I travel my skis get checked but my boots get carried on with me. More information means when you see a fitter you already are better informed as to what is what and not gadget or color affected.

Watched this video twice before going out and buying both boots to test - really love that you guys have made these vids! Keep it up. I’m 6 foot and 185 lbs and out skied the 120’s once I pointed them downhill. Great in the bumps and trees but too soft for me when the speed went up. The 130 was amazing!!! Still super springy in the bumps and steeps and amazeballs on the straight line bombers and on Mach fast icey groomers! The 130 is so worth it! Thought it was going to be a little too stiff after skiing a 130 K2 Recon (alpine boot) that was a truly stiff boot.

Something to add is that especially out West, a lot of ski areas have backcountry gates up top where you can access a summit or bowls via a short tour or bootpack. Something like a Cochise / PT Duke combo is ideal for that. Even if you still have your standard alpine bindings, the Gripwalk sole and walk mode here is going to improve your bootpack. For me, this is why traditional alpine boots are just out of the question. But having options like the Cochise is amazing compared to true light touring boots.
@sketchyAnalogies
@sketchyAnalogies Жыл бұрын
This is exactly why I'm interested in the Cochise. As I progress from intermediate to advanced and purchase my first boot with growth in mind, this seems like a comfortable boot that I can take nearly anywhere. Even if I'm not bootpacking soon, it gives me the option and a hike mode for not much more money.

Great review guys. I recently got myself a pair of Cochise 130s and everything you've said is spot on. While I've only skied them twice, I can tell right away that they are probably providing me with 80-90% of the performance I get out of my 2014-15 Mach 1 130s. My biggest gripes are the buckles and that they are harder to get on and off. Glad that I got them and will ski them exclusively this year, as my other boots are packed out. However, I wouldn't rule out getting a Mach 1 130 and skiing a two boot quiver in the future.
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I put the buckles in the "mildly annoying" category. I do think if you tour a lot, you'll wear the liner out, so having that second set for longevity makes sense.

Thanks! I'm looking at buying my first boot pair. I'm looking at getting a versatile boot that I can do almost anything with (as a quickly progressing intermediate to advanced skier). These seem to fit the bill nicely. Almost a pure alpine boot but with tech bindings and a walk mode. Opens up hike to terrain without much sacrifice. Given they will last me years, I'm hoping to have room to grow in terms of skill and I think these give me that.

Got a pair of the new 130s this season, really liking them so far. They ski well, they hike well, and they're very comfortable. You didn't mention probably my favourite thing about them, the floating tongue on the liner! Being able to get them just roomy enough with no heel lift by adjusting a bit of velcro is so nice
@SkiEssentials

As a high instep skier, I actually really value that as well--totally spaced on it in the video! It's amazing how many parts and details there are to discuss, and that one totally slipped my mind. I have it on my Nordica boots as well, and it's pretty necessary, but I also found it very difficult to un-velcro the tab!

Jeff skis a Promachine 130 and he really likes it. He also has a Speedmachine 120, but his flexible ankles make him appreciate the stiffer 130. Even though I have about 50 pounds on Jeff and with more leverage, I still prefer the 120 flex simply because I like to flex my ankles. The 130 stacks up well against a Lange RX 130 LV, or the Tecnica Mach1 130 LV for sure--just some small intricacies in fit that set them apart, but very similar performance.

Very nice video thank you guys, I think the whole boot section is the must underrated category in the skiing sport. Pls do more stuff like that. What maby would be interesting how would you compare it to other Boots in this category, especially to the Atomic Hawx Ultra/Prime XTD Line? Both have kind of the same locking mechanism but the atomic line is much lighter. Where is the compromise if there is one? Best regards Chris
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials 2 жыл бұрын
It's all about fit, Chris. If the boot does not fit, then it doesn't matter about the weight or walk mode. I do not fit into the Atomics at all while I was able to put my foot into the Tecnica and ski on day one. Lighter boots can also get deflected easier on the downhills in more rugged conditions and terrain, so that's another consideration, is how much resort/alpine skiing you're planning on doing, perhaps that weight isn't such an issue then?

Great form, guys! I’ve got the 2019-2020 season 120s and love them. How do the ‘22s compare? I’ve always wondered if my version still allows a bit too much flex with the little walk-ski switch they have. Is the stiffness *and* walkability of the 2022 of the 120s that much improved than my year? And would you say that they importantly lighter with that new upper? Thanks!
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials 2 жыл бұрын
I think the new boots are noticeably more efficient in power transfer. Just a step up in performance overall to be honest. The boots you have are great, these just take it to another level and have that much more precision in their performance. They do feel a little lighter as well. Hope that helps!

Really appreciate the thorough review. Believe it or not I’m still skiing on the original 2011 Cochise with the funky powerstap 4th buckle! They have served me very well but it’s time for a replacement. I was thinking I would go with the 130 flex this time but after this review it sounds like the new 120 would be considerably stiffer in feel than my old 120s? If that’s the case the new 120 should be plenty. I’m 5’10” and 160 lbs and looking for an all mountain setup that can ski bumps inbounds or drop big backcountry peaks. Thanks for your help 🙏!
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Russ! Based off what you're coming off and your size, I think that 120 should be plenty too. The difference Bob felt between the 120 and 130 was significant, and I think at your weight the 120 will be more than sufficient, and a little more forgiving for big landings and stuff like that. Go for it.

Fantastic review. This clears up a lot of my questions about this boot. I’m curious, what’s your take on how this boot compares to the Zero G Pro Tour? A lot appears to be shared between the two offerings from Tecnica. Both have four buckles and a power strap, similar walk mechanisms, and similar flex ratings (on paper). Is the skiing experience that much better on the Cochise? Do they feel the same when touring (weight difference aside)? Can see some overlap in the customer for both boots, yet to find a good comparison between the two.
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials 2 жыл бұрын
I would say yes, the skiing experience is noticeably better on the Cochise. It's hard to take weight out of the equation when thinking about touring, but I'd say they feel relatively similar. There's definitely some overlap there, but I think there's also a distinct application for both, or at least an ideal application. The Zero G I would recommend to someone who is touring a lot. Exploring new zones, touring a lot, maybe you're even touring every day. The Cochise to me feels like a boot for someone who is skiing in the resort most of the time, and will tour occasionally. Maybe a season will go by when you don't even tour once, but still want the capability to do so. So, yeah, skiing performance is noticeably better on Cochise, but I do still see a little overlap. I think the overlap is for a really specific customer, but that skier does exist.

I've just bought the Zero G, it fits my foot very well, much better than the old Cochise 2018. Can you confirm Bob that the latest version as reviewed here is the same fit as the Zero Gs as I'm very tempted to get the latest Cochise 120, but now only on line to purchase.

I recently bought the Crochise 120s and have really liked them so far my one complaint is getting them on if it’s a really cold day and I haven’t had them next to the heater in the car the can be very difficult to get on but other that that I really like them.
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials 2 жыл бұрын
That's a pretty common issue with really any overlap style boot. Manufacturers are definitely getting better at solving that problem, but yeah, I hear ya. My Promachines and Speedmachines from Nordica are the same. If it's cold and they haven't been under heat, they're tough to get on. vEven toughter to get off.

HI Emily! As noted, it's got the same shell features as the 130 but the liner of the 120, so it's not quite as precise of a fit as the 130, but it's still wonderful. For both in and out of bounds skiing, I think you've got an ideal setup. The lock mechanism on the walk mode is great, and the combination of uphill efficiency and downhill performance is quite impressive. SE

That was pretty interesting, didn't know that driving tips is considered old school now! Have you guys heard of any boot makers exploring the idea of widening the toe box, kind of like how Altra and others have done that with hiking shoes? I have a pretty low volume foot/calf but I love being able to spread my toes out wide and I haven't found a boot fitter that can really make that happen without hours and hours of work.
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials 2 жыл бұрын
Companies are certainly making it easier for boot fitters to stretch toe boxes with stuff like the Tecnica's C.A.S. zones in the boot, but nothing out of the box. Driving the tips, I guess I'm dating myself, but certainly more of a straight-ski style than a wider and deeper sidecut ski like the Enforcer 104 that I've been skiing.
@scollyutube
@scollyutube 2 жыл бұрын
Do they still hurt a bit taking them off? I have last year's 4 buckle Cochise and the shell sides on top of your foot are quite sharp taking them off with the tongue pulled forward. Other than that the fit and feel are great. Also watching you ski those Enforcers in this video Bob, they definitely didn't look as dynamic and slick as your Enf 88 vids.
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials 2 жыл бұрын
The Quick Instep helps, but some people, like myself, have sensitive insteps. I haven't experienced pain in my 120's thus far. In relation to the Enforcer 88, it's certainly a different animal, being almost 20 mm narrower, with less taper and rocker plus more metal.

I'd love to see more of these. A couple ideas: I think maybe having a controlled boot to compare all of the boots too throughout the year would be a good way to elaborate. I think it would help us understand where you guys are coming from. (Not all manufacturers are the same) and to compare it to previous models and generations, that would be also useful. For example I myself am on the 2020 cochise 130 myself ect. Dare I mention a boot wall 🤤

Remember Bob ..re lots of boots.....happy wife, happy life. :-). Thanks for this great review. I am similar in size and weight as yourself (Bob). You did not mention aloud your preference 120 or the 130 as you stated Fit conquers the rest (think its the 120 from what I picked up in comments reviewed). Perfect timing in my on line search as just happened to try a pair of 120s yesterday (not a fan of the color though) after a wet day on the hill ended bit early as been contemplating touring but wanting something that covers resort 80 percent of time. I was told the bases can be change so could use on rest of quiver ie. Look Pivots etc. which makes it interesting?. So that said sking 80 percent of time would be resort would 130 stand up better or simply get a 2nd liner in event wear other one out in the 120. Thanks again and have a good weekend.

Eyeballing the XT3's but friend that got me on the Kendo's also just went Cochise. Primarily front side mixing aggressive carving, bumps and trees. Coming out of the OG Cochise 130 Pro from 2012,which has done well with met head and nav punches and an Intuition Pro Wrap to stiffen it up a bunch, how would the fit on the newer gen Cochise compare ? Especially concerned about length as im borderline in length on my current right foot now and it looks like the BSL is 5mm less per size now .
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials 2 жыл бұрын
New 130 is less tight than that Pro, but feels more like a real alpine ski boot. The forefoot of that OG Cochise was really tight and narrow and I found the heel to be not as snug, while the new boot is more consistent overall. I don't think the length actually varies that much, as the plastic is now thinner, so they're able to shorten the boot overall without messing with the internal length.

I’m looking to upgrade my boots. New setup this year with qst 106 skis with warden 13 binding. After my first day on them I noticed my bindings really chewed up my old boots (7 year Dalbello low flex boot). I’m looking for all mountain, 100-120 flex boot, with walk mode or hybrid boot. Any suggestions to help me start my search?
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials 2 жыл бұрын
While your older boot may have softer plastic, I'd make sure to get a safety check, just in case. For a new boot, pretty much every company now makes a 100-120 flex boot with a walk mode, and most have them in a variety of volume fits. It's certainly best to try them on at a reputable shop if possible, but if you have an average-shaped foot, you can likely get away with a mid-volume fit (100mm forefoot last). Salomon Shift Pro 100/120 and these Cochise 120's are great too, so that's a good place to start.

Yup, pretty much all MV or narrower. The Tecnica's do have the C.A.S. material and it's pretty easy for a boot fitter to take care of some width in the forefoot. I have a pretty high volume foot and the 120 fits pretty darn good right out of the box.

I actually tried 110 cochise for alittle bit in the shop and felt like i could flex them fairly well but its obviously easy because im in the shop not outside in the cold. So how much of a flex difference would the 110 and 120 have?

Keep in mind that there are more factors here. Ankle flexibility is a bit one. If you have flexible ankles, then a stiffer boot generally works better. If you're on the rigid side, and in between flexes, then I'd lean to the 110. Additionally, the 120 will be more responsive overall, not just in a fore/aft flex setting. Do you need/want more precision or are you looking for some more comfort?

Any comments on how the Cochise 130 compares directly to the Mach 1 130 fit wise? I have the MV from 3ish years ago... If I get another boot it seems like a no-brainer to get the Cochise 130.

The lower shell is listed as 1mm narrower than the MV 130, so I think you're going to have a similar overall experience. I'd recommend cooking the liner if it feels too tight out of the box--there's a lot of room for customization with this boot. Have fun! SE

@@SkiEssentials I have a feeling what I'll end up doing is setting up my wider/powder skis (Cochise 108/Rustler 11 - the two I have touring bindings on) to use the Cochise and my narrower skis (Brahma 88/82) the Mach1. I'm guessing the boot sole length is just enough different that I won't be able to quite go back and forth without tweaking the forward pressure (?)

Hi Guys, I have the Technica Mach 1 MV 120 alpine boot. I was looking for a hybrid boot to start back country skiing. Would the Cochise 120 be a good comparison. Gday from Australia.

Yup, that's the idea! Take a Mach 1 120 MV skier and put them into a Cochise for uphill and downhill skiing. Have fun! SE

Predominately East Coast skier and I'd classify myself as an aggressive charger 80% of the time. 20% screwing around. I'm looking at HV's... Mach1 130 or Cochise 130?

The performance level is very similar. If possible, get your feet in them to make sure you have the right size and volume.

How much are you all spending on your boots? And how customized?
@SkiEssentials

Retail, boots like this are around 650-750. If you buy them at a shop, they'll usually do customization included in that price. I put a custom foot bed in my boots, and usually stretch the forefoot just a bit.

How big is the difference from the 20/21 version?

I find the biggest difference is the new boot's support and power transfer. It feels more precise than the outgoing previous Cochise.

How would you compare this to the new Cochise light dyn gw?

Looks like a lighter version of the same boot. Haven't skied the lighter one, but given it's the same specs and flex as the 130, I'd imagine it's a hair less stable on the downhills but a good improvement in uphill efficiency.

Best ski boots review ! Great job guys! I'm tick to try the 115, yes the W model, I'm 175 and 5' 9" strong intermediate skier. I demoed the C 130 and too stiff for my skiing style, I'm always looking for pow, trees and soft snow. I ski nothing wider than 112 under foot. What do you guys think. Too low of calf?
@SkiEssentials

I'd say the 115 is right on the money for what you're looking to do. No calf issues with that boot, I think.

These boots took so long to come into stock I bought the Mach 1 instead. But now I still need a touring boot...

If you already have the Mach1, you might like a more touring-specific boot like the ZeroG--all depends on how you're planning on touring and what percentage of your ski day is dedicated to that application.
