The primary reason I don't review reels is due to the engineering behind them. It is much harder to speak with confidence about how something is constructed when I don't fully understand the various parts/materials. For me, my rule of thumb is to go with time tested winning brands and spend as high as your budget will allow. I like Daiwa & Shimano because they put out high quality stuff. Other brands are fine too but I don't think they are put together with the same level of quality.

SO glad I found your channel man! I've had the TFO 5'6" you mentioned for a couple years now. I have important information about it, because you'll probably need to repair it soon. The Pros- I've caught A LOT of fish on it, particularly fishing 1/32oz jigs. I've felt and landed just about everything on it. Stocked rainbows, longear sunfish, my pb rock bass at 15", several 11" bluegill twitching a rapala on the surface, slab crappie, a few 5ish lb channel cats, bass up to 3lb, and one very disgruntled slider turtle. Small fish feel good, but it can handle the big boys. Cons- The guide inserts are AWFUL. After 2 or 3 years of heavy use with 4lb fluoro and mono (never braid) every single guide, even the first reduction guide, had multiple grooves on it from line wear. The rod became completely unfishable, gnawing any line to bits in minutes. I've had to carefully strip every guide off so I can rebuild it with guides that will last. Why they would use such quality everything but skimp on such an essential component is beyond me. One personal con, it' still not as fast action as I prefer (grew up on Falcon HD series, now discontinued), there's a bit of wobble after a cast in comparison to a true fast blank. However it's still faster than all the whippy crappie rods I don't have much use for, and that's 90+% of ultralights in the USA.
@FishAnything
@FishAnything Жыл бұрын
That is good information! I have actually liked the guides up until this point, but I haven't caught 3 years worth of fish on the rod. I will keep an eye out for this issue - sorry that is happening.

Thanks for the feedback! I have a video on ultralight reel selection. Typically I feel a size 1000 reel is best for ultralight techniques. A size 2000 can sometimes balance a longer rod better but most reels are so light these days that they have a hard time offsetting the balance of a tip-heavy rod.

Nice video dude! The Daiwa Presso is the best Ultra Light/Light powered rod on the market in my opinion. @ryanwilson5936
@ryanwilson5936 Жыл бұрын
@@emidyl24 Yeah, the 11’ is definitely beefier than the other lengths. You’d probably need a size 2000/2500 reel to balance it out nicely. I work in an a outdoor store and have the privilege of handling a lot of product and I was actually considering the 11’ as an ultralight steelhead rod. I’m not too sure about that thought quite yet though.
@ryanwilson5936
@ryanwilson5936 Жыл бұрын
@@okish02 They cast far enough for me. The longest casting line type for these rods is definitely mono though. A super braid type line works well if you put a little weight behind it but for extremely light offerings, mono has been best for me when casting distance is a concern.

are you familiar with the Daiwa regal line? I'm trying to decide between a 1000 or a 2000 as they appear to be the same specs weight wise. The 2000 having more line capacity I suspect it's due to a larger spool than the 1000. Any thoughts?
@FishAnything
@FishAnything Жыл бұрын
Both reels would be just fine. I feel that the 1000 would have more than enough line capacity for UL fishing but if you plan to need a lot, go up the the 2000. Spool diameter is likely the same; the 2000 is probably just deeper.

In the market for an ultralight setup and your channel has been a goldmine of info. What should I be looking for if I plan to throw little spinners and spoons along with with some small jigs? Fast action?
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 8 ай бұрын
It sounds like you will want a versatile stick. I would go for something Fast or Moderate Fast but not too stout. You want a bit of a softer blank to load up on those treble hooks. A few great options would be the Temple Fork, Fenwick Eagle, or Bass Pro Shops Panfish Elite.
@alvarinhocafetero6782
@alvarinhocafetero6782 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your insight. I saw your review on the Fenwick Eagle and how great it has been for your trout setup. Is that still the case? Do any of the rods on your list sub-$80 standout as a better option for trout? We can only use single hooks locally so I’m thinking about fast action. Would you recommend a Defy Silver as a better option? Thanks again for helping the community.
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 2 жыл бұрын
Hey there! I love the Fenwick Eagle for trout fishing, but to your point, primarily for the trebled hooks because it is soft enough to provide some "cushion". If you are fishing primarily singles, I think you can get away with the Eagle, but as mentioned, a slightly faster option might work even better. I think I would look at the Bass Pro Shops Panfish Elite for $80 because it isn't quite AS FAST as the Defy. But if you want to go a bit lower in price, yeah, the Defy should work just fine. Maybe run mono on it to soften the blow a little. Pretty easy to rip hooks from Trout's mouths if you have to stout of a rod paired with low-stretch line.

What rod length do you recommend in the Dobyns Sierra Trout & Panfish? They vary from 7' 9" all the way down to 6' 2". In general, could you maybe explain the role that rod length can play for an ultra-light rod? Also is there any performance benefit to a single piece rod verses a multiple piece rod?
@BedjamRivera
@BedjamRivera 2 жыл бұрын
The longer the length the farther you can cast but they're also a little more whippy or noodle like. The shorter the rod, the more accurate you can cast and it's better in creeks and streams where they're bushes around you.

What he said ^^^ Personally, I have found that 6' range rods are my favorite for versatility with ultralight fishing. I have been insanely curious about the longer Dobyns though because I have a feeling they don't get whippy and they are likely great options. Maybe I will scoop one up at some point. As far as 1 or 2 piece goes, the only major watchout I have is that the multi-piece rods can sometimes come apart or twist a bit so the guides are off-center. Otherwise, I don't see much of a difference in sensitivity or weight (despite what some folks might say). For the Dobyns, I have had a one and a two piece and they have performed identically.

I think the 13 Fishing Defy Silver is the way to go. If you want something a little softer, the Temple Fork would be fine too. Personally though, I think you can get away with the slightly faster taper on the 13. Just be cognizant of how you set your drag and I would also recommend mono to help provide some "cushion" due to the stretch.

Great video! I usually do shore fishing so casting discance is very imporant. With that being said should i go with a 6'6" rod or 7" to maximize the casting distance? What else would you reccomend?
@FishAnything
@FishAnything Жыл бұрын
The line is going to help you just as much with casting as the rod length, so I’d say don’t skimp on the line you choose. As for the rod length, I would say either length will be fine. Try to find a rod that isn’t too whippy or noodly and you should be good to go. Lmk if you have a specific budget and I’ll do my best to help point you in the right direction.

I have an odd question. I fished a lot as a kid with family that didn't really teach me about rods and tackle (I don't think they really knew much, we had big and small stuff all over the place) and when I got back into fishing 1.5 years ago, I immediately went towards Ultralight and have been fishing that way since, 5"6' UL, 2000-size reel, 4lb. test. If I want to step one level up from my UL to throw heavier lures and use heavier line, what is the category? Light? Medium?
@FishAnything
@FishAnything Жыл бұрын
Good question! I think going with a Medium power will be what you are looking for. The light is very similar to an ultralight so it won't be a big enough change. A typical Medium rod is rated for much larger lures so you should have a lot of applications covered with that.

Just ordered some donkey tails for ice fishing super excited for that but I had a question regarding a new combo. I have a 5'9 lews mach lite speed stick Ive been using for the past year for trout fishing but wanted a slightly heavier set up for light tackle passing in the spring or to target larger trout. I want to get the Daiwa Revros LT 2500 and get a Light 13 Fishing Defy Silver rod. I just wanted your opinion on the 6'6 or 7ft version, and should I get it in a 1 or 2 piece? Im leaning more towards 6'6 because I feel like that's sufficient but maybe 7ft is better for fishing ponds/lakes and targeting better sized fish. I also travel by car to all spots and there's limited room so maybe a 2 piece is the way to go. Can you assist me at all? Love the vids btw, thank you!

I prefer a fast tip that isn't whippy I've only found one I liked but that was like 9 yrs ago and I ended up leaving it on the bank while catching bait for catfis and I cant remember what it was tbh. Hi there Ethan, what an awesome video. I came across your channel just the other day and have been really enjoying your content. On this topic of Rods do you have any thoughts on the Ugly Stik Elite Series 5' ? I am based in South Africa and I am bit limited for choice of ultralight rods but the ugly stick is one of them. Apparently this is an upgrade from the GX2 series. I'll be mostly using it for small crankbaits, spoons, and plastic jigs. I am also trying to figure out what category that falls in... entry levels, mid-level, etc and if it is comparable to any of the rods you reviewed in this video? Appreciate any advice here and thanks again for the great content. .
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 8 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for the support! Sorry for the delayed response. Ugly stiks are just fine, but I definitely would avoid their long models. The 5’ rod should do pretty well for you. They are definitely a low range rod but they will catch plenty of fish. Typically, my biggest complaint would be the feel of them is softer than a standard graphite rod which will be faster in action and likely more sensitive.

For the $35-40 price, I am not sure you will get much better than the Celilo. Or at least, I haven't personally tested anything for that range better. I think you would be better off trying to sell your Celilo and add the $40 to whatever you get and try to get a Bass Pro Panfish Elite. That rod is $80 but I bet if you timed things right, you could get it on a deal since BPS tends to run a lot of promotions. If not that, you could go for a 13 Fishing Defy Silver.
