The stock rubber shifter bushings were a little more forgiving in how accurate your shifter throws need to be but aren't responsible for isolating much/any vibration. Replacing a plastic shift cable bracket with billet stainless one theoretically could transfer more vibration through the cable to the shift knob, but it's imperceptible. On the other hand, stiffer drivetrain mounts make a hilarious difference in NVH because those directly connect the greatest source of vibration (engine, transmission) to the car chassis. The NVH difference going from stock to high durometer ("stage 2") polyurethane engine and transmission mounts in my Mk7 was kind of insane. 30k miles later now, I'm switching to "OEM+" rubber mounts to somewhat regain my sanity. It does not, (I have a 2022 GTI) and btw, all the complaints about the infotainment are over-blown, it just takes a little bit to get used to, sure they need to fix some stuff, and a couple critical knobs would be better, but don't let those small things overshadow what a huge leap fwd the mk8 is in every other aspect, if I was in a mk7.5 I'd def trade into a mk8.

One thing to note. The MK8 GTI and R look much better in person than on video or photos. Personally, I like every angle except the rear. I like the rear of the MK7.5 better. Interior? Subjective, but I prefer the 7.5 interior. I realize EVERTHING is going digital these days, but for some of us out there that just like a simple mechanical gauge cluster, and buttons, dials, simple like that in the MK7.5 GTI S. When I had my 7.5 GTI S in at the dealer for service last week, I saw the new 8 GTI in the lot. It was an Autobahn version and the MSRP was $38,700 on the sticker. With tax and fees we are looking at $41k for a GTI. I paid $26k for my MK7.5 S. Do I see a $12k better car?? Again Subjective. It comes down to what you can afford. For people like myself that want something fun and practical to drive without breaking the bank, the new car is almost getting out of reach.

We’re some 47 years into the GTi and almost a decade into the R, how has VW not perfected the long throws and sloppiness of the manual gear shift? This should be a fun car to manually shift. And the infotainment is egregious. Do they ever listen to feedback by buyers?

I have about 30 track days with a modified MK7.5 R and there is no getting away from the fact that it's just a better street car, even with a big rear anti-sway bar, -3 camber in front, etc. It's incredibly fast and potent, but it's not exactly fun. I wonder if that rear diff is enough to change the handling at the limit on the track. However - again, if you have no intention of tracking your R, on the street it's amazing.

I mostly listen to bluetooth audio in my car either via the native music player or phone mirroring. As phone mirroring is wired, I mainly use it on longer journeys, now sometimes my phone takes a little longer than usual to pair up which causes the native audio player to have a tantrum and change back to the radio, when I'm not phone mirroring that is. A simple change of audio sources back to bluetooth gets everything back on track. To do it physically, depending what screen I'm on can take a few screen stabs, more so if the road is bumpy and waiting for screens to change pages. "Luckily" my car has voice control where I can verbally ask it to change to bluetooth audio.... which is great in theory but takes about as long as using the touchscreen as 1st you have to press the voice button, wait for the screen to change to the voice recognition page and prompt you to talk, then you say the command, then wait for it to process the command and carry it out. If there was a physical source button somewhere I could do that whole procedure in a few button presses, assuming it would scroll through the audio source options in a set order, maybe even one press if bluetooth was next after radio. I just don't understand why manufacturers are making their vehicles harder to operate, it's like they want us to be distracted by their badly implemented cost cutting. And why is it is so hard for the cars to remember the state it was in before shutdown? Why do I constantly have to turn the cruise control master on/off to on, why does cruise control need a master on/off, what's wrong with just using the cancel button? Why on some cars do you constantly have to turn the brake hold on? Or sports mode? Urhhh!

I drive a 7.5 GTI manual and absolutely love it! With regards to the infotainment system, I believe it is not such a big issue as everyone makes it to be. Once you enter your desirable settings, you rarely go into the system at all. I have my wireless apple car play and only change the volume and the temperature on a daily basis. The volume could be adjusted on the steering wheel and the temp control should be a shortcut. The pluses of the new interior: heated wheel, ventilated seats, more settings on the gauge cluster. The back seat gets temp control, which I don't have now. Plus, there are 4 USB C, as opposed to the one I currently have. Overall, I think the pros of the interior outweigh the cons. It's a matter of time till I get mark 8 R manual. Luckily, my GTI performs great meantime.

Super popular in Europe are the Seat Leon and the Skoda Octavia based on this platform. The Seat is much better looking and equally powerful and dynamic, the Skoda is bigger and more spacious, design is also better looking IMHO. Seat now has Cupra as a sub brand for the sportiest version of their cars. Skoda doesn't have a direct analogue to the Golf R, the Octavia Rs is more like the golf gti, but in a bigger family oriented design. Also Skoda produce an even bigger car - the Superb, which has tons of interior and cargo space (especially in the Kombi body type). The Superb has AFAIK a version of the golf R gen 7 drivetrain(in the highest trim levels). It is sad that you don't get these brands, because you already have the network of VW/VAG dealers/specialists who could accommodate and service them, because they are more or less the same vehicles underneath and share most of the components and architecture. Also I think you could find better value and design regarding Skoda and Seats model lines compared to VW. VW moved their brand up a notch, so they lost some of the value they were previously known for. Long gone are the days of VW being a "the peoples" brand, now this niche is occupied by Seat and Skoda.

I had a mk7.5 for a while. it was very competent, well built (better than my BMW), and quick. But it completely lacked personality even with 6mt.
