Was initially disappointed when I read its wasn't going to be a 4 cylinder screamer like the O.G R7 but recently rode the baby tuono 660 and the Yamaha mt07 and the less is more philosophy stood out,both were alot of fun and yes the Aprilia felt alot stronger but both made sense and this R7 will also probably make alot of sense.
@SeekaX
@SeekaX 3 жыл бұрын
I feel like the main problem with this bike is that the RS660 is only about a grand more. And while i don't care too much for the electronics, the 25hp more certainly seem worth it and the Aprilia isn't going to lack in the handling department either. It's a bit more special as well. I was hoping for the R7 to be in a similar price category to the MT07, for ~8000€ i would've absolutely considered buying one. But almost 10k for a 74hp bike without premium suspension or brakes? That's a tough sell. Still glad this bike exists, that's the type of fun and usable power in a bike i'm hoping to see more of in a sporty chassis.

@HeyAddieImTojo

It can’t be priced like the mt-07 since there are more expensive brake components and the fork is also more expensive. Guess that much would be obvious…

@@HeyAddieImTojo To be honest, even it sell more than 9000€ and direct convert to Malaysia Ringgit, I will buy it. Too bad is it still unsure whether our local dealer (Hong Leong Yamaha) will bring it in or not.
@SeekaX
@SeekaX 3 жыл бұрын
@@HeyAddieImTojo It being more expensive is expected, but it's over 2k more than the mt-07 and the brakes and suspension aren't that much better (from what i've heard). This bike is as expensive as an MT-09, i would've expected it to fall in the middle somewhere. If Aprilia can offer 25hp more and all of the electronic gadgets you can think of for a grand more then there either has to be a catch with the Aprilia or the R7 is overpriced. And typically you'd think of the Italian bikes as the overpriced ones.

Chris one of the very few reviewers out there that I would actually base a buying decision on. He strikes the perfect balance of performance and real world riding experience in his narrative. I get the R7, it’s a better Kawasaki 400 for the track and road that will improve your skills in half the time of a super sport. It depends on your wallet though, a fully kitted 400 track bike is still less than the R7. The 660 is very appealing but I would like to see how they are holding up after a few thousand track miles. Keep your wits about you and let the faster bikes pass you on the straights and enjoy the experience of slaying those corners and passing the bigger bikes in the twisties.

Interesting the '400 track bike' comment - thats exactly what riding this reminded me of, and I love a good 400. Definitely similar riding experiences, but this is definitely easier to ride. Would I swap my NC30 for one? I actually would be tempted, but currently there are more classes I can race a classic 400 in than this, so that would sway it for me. Now if Yamaha started an R7 cup...

I think I'ma be loving this new R7 (especially after hearing it with a performance exhaust!) It's a very sporty handler, stunningly stylish, torquey 2cyl design with relatively good fuel economy at a relatively budget price. But with under 75hp in a relatively low-revving 2-banger, it's definitely NOT a 'supersport'. It's fair to call it a sport-bike for sure, but journalists get a little crazy with the hyperbole and 'superlative' words. 😋

You really have only so many places on the street to rip these bikes open and in 40 yrs I’ve been up and down the cc range having a ball with the newer small cc bikes in the R3 range on down to a z125pro that I flail about after a few mods but the R7 with the CP2 engine and a few scant mods for myself including the full Akrapovic from the MT07 which fits nicely and sounds great and some Woodcraft risers (old back) makes this more than enough for the street for me and one of the most fun middle weights I’ve ridden in a while. Honestly unless your skill levels are somewhere close to Rossi there’s only so much you can do on the street. The Pearl white for 2023 had me looking at what I want to trade in now for an upgrade.

R7 bore/stroke: 80.0mm x 68.6mm Due to how durable this engine seems to be (guys are trying its strength with turbo kits, no joke), I can see Yamaha bumping bore out 2mm in the coming years, bumping compression a bit, maybe putting in slightly more radical cams. I'd say 85-90 hp at the wheel shouldn't be too difficult. Maybe they won't do anything in the next refresh or remake, but I'd say it could be pretty easy to do. It's great how it is, but there's room for more power without ruining the experience. The guys at Isle of Man TT have tuned the Kawasaki 649cc parallel to about 90 whp for that racing event with some radical engine mods. 82mm bore x 68.6mm stroke would be 724.5cc.

The problem I see with this bike is the power characteristics being arse about face. Why bother with garbage electronics on a bike like this? The R7 - K.I.S.S. which is what Yamaha has done. Now tweak the engine, tune the suspension and have fun. Learn to ride instead of letting a computer do it for you. Some of my fastest country back road riding was on a RZ350 Yamaha - the chassis was like riding al dente pasta but man, could you ring that lovely parallel 2-Stroke Twin in the corners and fly through the twisties. Engine modes, last bike I had with them, ZX10R Gen4, I set to full power and left it there. Traction control was always set to 1, couldn't be faffed having to turn it off every ride. Now back on a more simple 1KRR from 04. Don't miss the electronics at all.

I just noticed that, there are a lot less supersports on the street nowadays. I'm guessing it's because as you've said, other types of bikes have come a long way. And just how many people ride on the track yearly? Monthly? Or even, weekly? I pity the guy that has to ride for a long distance daily with a supersport. Still, I just don't the explanation that it's supposed to "fill" in the gap between the r3 and r1. The R6 already fit that category already. The R7 on it's own is alright... but still when compared to the R6? And you really just can't brush off the R6... it's REPLACING the R6. I mean, I think most people's first instinct is, whether to buy the R7, or a 2nd hand R6. I just don't think the R7 has proven itself enough to be warranted to be compared to others, besides the R6.

I'm really happy that there are finally some fresh bikes in the sector I wouldn't want to do trackdays on a bike without TC anymore. Seen enough people launch themselves into orbit on bikes that "don't need tc ". I think for those just doing a few trackdays a year any help is welcome. R9 with the gizmos maybe? Or even better KTM do an RC 890R - that isn't 40k and sold out. :))

It looks good just as a design... That being said I would never buy this thing, and then what's the point. Personally I never like things that intend to be something it is not, and this is exactly that. I've had fun on a scooter on twisty roads as well, so of course horsepower isn't everything. I would still choose the scooter over this bike though, because the scooter isn't trying to be anything other than a scooter.

I never understood why they scrapped the R7 coz the Gixxer 750 was a perfect road and track bike in my experience. The 74hp though is something I will never get my head around. I had a CBR400 import that put out close to that I think.

A couple of questions for all the street Rossis and ego bikers who think this has not enough power or doesn't "deserve" the R7 name, bla bla: Can you set consistent, competitive lap times with any cc bike around any type of track? Can you perfectly execute walking / bicycle speed complex, one handed, etc. maneuvers on any bike? No? Yeah then anything above a bike like Ninja 400, including this one is already too much bike for you and you don't even know it. Since when is being a good rider just twisting the throttle on a straight road? Cut the bullshit about how anything below 100-120 bhp is "too slow" and learn to ride first.
@chrisgraham6031
@chrisgraham6031 3 жыл бұрын
Especially when you look at articles like Bennett’s “How much horsepower do you really need?”. For sports road riding, no one is actually using that extra 40 bhp of the r6 unless they’re way, way beyond any speed limit. The cp2 has more power available than the r6 until the r6 is above 10,000 RPM *at full throttle*, and how often are people riding like that on the road?
@Stratocasterhead51

As you said. Not everyone will be rossi. Despite how much practice you get on a bike. People buy bikes for excitement. And even if the R6 couldn't be used at 100% on road, it still provided ample excitement, largely due to its engine and racey feel. Also can we stop this bullshit about telling people which bikes they should get? Or even worse, which bikes people WANT to get? Motorcycling is a passion, treat it as such.

I will say what I first said when I heard Yamaha was introducing this bike, Kawasaki just lost their 650 market. Don't get me wrong, the 650 series bikes from Kawi are all fine in their own right but realistically they're boring and characterless machines. The R7 will mop the floor with any 650 out there in terms of engine character and handling ability.

You're wrong. Most bikers did not like supersport bikes due to the riding position. This bike is the worst of both worlds. Uncomfortable and lacks power. It's not fun to be on the road, when you're being overtaken by everything else. Ninja 650 is cheaper and more comfy with only a bit less power. Cbr 650r has a much better engine, the same price and more comfy.

In fairness, most don't know the categories. This is a Production twin or Supertwin in reality - but it's a "Supersport style" bike I guess. I see supersport and sportbike used kind of interchangeably by a lot of people - understandable. Technically, even an R3 can be a "Superbike" - so it's all a bit "grey".

Did yamaha pay you to say it's a supersport? The foremost requirement for a supersport is power, which this one clearly lacks. I have no idea who buys an uncomfortable bike with no power. It's just a beginner big bike. A lot of people are going to get buyer's remorse very soon.
